Yes. A parent or guardian who is the Family Sharing organizer or is designated a parent/guardian can manage a child’s Screen Time and supported parental controls from an iPhone. Add the child’s own Apple Account to Family Sharing, set up the Mac under that account, then open Settings > Family > [child’s name] > Screen Time on the parent’s iPhone. Apple’s redesigned controls require version 27 or later on the relevant devices; older systems use the previous Screen Time experience and may show different menus.
What you need before you start
- Family Sharing: An adult organizer creates the family group and invites members. Each member uses their own Apple Account. The group can include the organizer and up to five additional members. Apple explains how Family Sharing works.
- A child-specific Apple Account: Do not give the child your Apple Account. Apple says a Child Account is required for children under 13 and can be used through age 18; the minimum age and some protections vary by country or region. See Apple’s Child Account guidance.
- Parent or guardian access: The person managing controls must be the family organizer or designated parent/guardian.
- Compatible software for the new controls: For the redesigned version 27 experience, each relevant family device needs its corresponding iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, or visionOS 27 release. The family’s parental controls must also be updated. Check the iPhone and Mac versions before following version-specific labels. Apple’s Screen Time guide describes the version requirement and fallback.
Set up the child’s account on the Mac
Apple’s guidance is to keep the child’s apps and information separate from the parent’s by using the child’s own user account and Apple Account. The Mac setup is separate from the iPhone or iPad Quick Start workflow.

Authenticate as an administrator, choose Standard as the account type, create the account, then sign into it with the child’s Apple Account. Have each person log out before another person uses their account. |
Turn on and manage Screen Time from the iPhone
- On the parent’s iPhone, open Settings > Family.
- Tap the child’s name, then tap Screen Time.
- Follow the prompts to review or set up the child’s controls. In the version 27 flow, the organizer or parent/guardian may also be invited to review controls after updating the family devices.
- Create a four-digit Screen Time passcode that the child cannot guess. Apple directs the organizer or parent/guardian to set the child’s passcode on their own device. Keep it private; it is needed to change controls.
Apple recommends managing a child’s controls from the parent or guardian’s device. The iPhone path above is for the current version 27 experience; older software can have different menus. What you can change remotely
Apps, websites, and content
Depending on the child’s device, software, age, and region, controls can allow or block specific apps and websites, filter websites, and apply content ratings and privacy restrictions. Ask to Browse may be on by default for children under 13, while Limit Adult Websites may be on for children under 18; local age rules can affect these defaults. Communication and contacts
For supported Apple communication apps, parents can manage who the child can contact and approve new-contact requests where that feature is available.
Schedules and time allowances
Schedules set when the child can use the device, including different schedules for weekdays and weekends. Time Allowances limit time across categories such as Entertainment, Games, and Social Media. Requests from the child
Eligible purchase or download approvals, website requests, extra-time requests, and new-contact requests can be answered from Messages on the parent’s device or in person on the child’s device. See Apple’s guide to approving purchases, downloads, and Screen Time requests.

Family Sharing and Screen Time are not a promise that a parent can remotely see everything happening on the Mac or administer every third-party app. The controls apply to supported Apple features, and Apple notes that not every control is available on every device. For software that has its own account or family settings, check that app’s controls separately.

If the menus or controls do not match
- Check versions first. The redesigned controls require version 27 or later across relevant family devices. If the family cannot update every device, Apple says the previous Screen Time controls remain available; controls can also be adjusted directly on the child’s device.
- Confirm the family role and account. Make sure the child is in the family group with their own Apple Account, and that you are the organizer or a designated parent/guardian.
- Check region and age rules. Account eligibility, automatic defaults, and whether some settings can be removed vary by country or region. Local law may require certain settings to be enabled and non-removable.
