To make yourself an administrator, edit SquadGame/ServerConfig/Admins.cfg, define a permission group, assign your numeric SteamID64 to that group, save the file, and restart the server. A minimal configuration looks like this:
Group=Mod:chat,kick,ban,cameraman
Admin=12345678901234567:ModThe first line creates the Mod group and grants four access levels. The second connects one Steam account to that group. Replace the example ID with your own SteamID64 and use only the permissions you actually need.

What you need before editing the file
You need access to the server’s files through your hosting control panel, FTP/SFTP, or another administrative file tool. You also need the numeric SteamID64 for the Steam account that will administer the server. A player name, clan tag, or Steam display name will not work in Admins.cfg.
- File access: permission to open and save the server configuration.
- Your identifier: the numeric SteamID64 belonging to your account.
- A maintenance window: stopping the server before editing is safest; some panels permit editing while it is stopped from the panel.
- A way to restart: changes normally take effect after a restart, and some hosts also apply them after a map change.
Make a copy of the existing file before changing it. That gives you a quick recovery path if a typo prevents the server from loading the intended permissions.

Where Squad stores administrator permissions
The local administrator list is stored at:
SquadGame/ServerConfig/Admins.cfgThe Squad configuration reference places Admins.cfg in this directory. A typical hosted server exposes the path inside a file manager under the server’s main installation directory. The exact top-level folder shown by a host can differ, but the SquadGame/ServerConfig/ portion is the part to look for.
Open the file as plain text. Near the top, you will usually see commented information describing available permission levels. Leave explanatory comments in place unless you have a reason to remove them; they are useful when you later adjust the group.
How the two configuration lines work
Squad uses one line to define a group and another to assign an account to it.

The group name after the colon on the Admin= line must match the name after Group= exactly. Treat spelling and capitalization as significant. The account line should contain only the numeric SteamID64, not a profile nickname or the number sign used in some chat representations.
Step-by-step: add yourself as an admin

Stop the server or open its managed file editor
Stop the server from the host control panel before editing whenever possible. If your provider supplies a file manager that explicitly supports configuration editing, use that workflow and follow its save instructions. Editing a live file can leave the running process using old values until the next restart.

Open
Admins.cfgNavigate to
SquadGame/ServerConfig/Admins.cfgand open it as text. If the file does not exist, check that you are in the active server instance rather than a template, backup, or staging directory.Recommended Free Tools

Choose the permissions your role requires
Start with a small set. For ordinary moderation,
chat,kick, andbanmay be sufficient. Addcameramanif you need the spectator-camera tools. Do not grant powerful configuration or server-management access merely because it is convenient. -
Add a group definition
Enter a new line using the exact syntax below. There must be no space replacing the colon or commas:
Group=Mod:chat,kick,ban,cameramanModis just a label; you can choose another name such asOwnerorEventStaff, provided you use the same spelling on every matchingAdmin=line. -
Add your Steam account to that group
On a separate line, replace the sample number with your numeric SteamID64:

Admin=12345678901234567:ModDo not paste your display name. If several people need the same rights, add one
Admin=line per SteamID64, all pointing toMod. -
Save and restart
Save the file, start the server again, and wait until it is fully online. A procedure published by Sparked Host and updated 19 June 2023 gives the same sequence: edit the file, define the group, assign the Steam64ID, save, and restart. If your host documents a map-change reload, that may apply the file without a complete process restart, but restarting is the dependable first test.

Join and test in the console
Join the server with the account whose SteamID64 you entered. On an English keyboard, the administration reference says the in-game console opens by double-tapping the tilde key. Run a command that corresponds to one of your assigned permissions, such as a moderation command, and confirm that it is accepted. Test during a quiet period so an incorrect configuration does not disrupt a live match.
Choosing a safe permission group
Permissions are granular. A group should contain the smallest set that covers its job, rather than every available level. The following descriptions reflect the administration reference’s access levels.

Keep cheat, config, manageserver, and immune out of an ordinary moderator group unless the role genuinely requires them. A practical split is to create a moderate group for chat and player actions and a separate owner group for configuration and process control.

Examples for common roles
Single owner with full operational control
Group=Owner:chat,kick,ban,cameraman,reserve,config,manageserver,immune,changemap,balance,pause,private
Admin=12345678901234567:OwnerThis grants substantial authority. Use it only for an account you trust to change settings and manage the server process.
Day-to-day moderator
Group=Moderator:chat,kick,ban,cameraman,balance
Admin=12345678901234567:ModeratorThis keeps configuration, process management, immunity, and testing powers separate from routine player moderation.
Several staff members sharing one role
Group=EventStaff:chat,kick,cameraman,changemap,pause
Admin=12345678901234567:EventStaff
Admin=23456789012345678:EventStaffEach account receives the same rights because both lines point to the same group. If one staff member needs fewer permissions, create a second group instead of adding exceptions to the shared role.
Why rights sometimes do not appear
The SteamID64 is wrong
The most common mistake is entering a player name or an ID from a different account. Compare the numeric value in the file with the SteamID64 for the account that actually joins the server. A changed display name does not matter; the numeric identifier does.
The group name does not match
Check both sides of the assignment. For example, Group=Mod:chat,kick must be paired with Admin=your-number:Mod, not Admin=your-number:Moderator. Correct punctuation, capitalization, and hidden spaces, then save the file again.

The server has not reloaded the file
Save the configuration, restart the server, and wait for it to finish starting before testing. If the host explicitly supports configuration reloads through a map change, change the map and reconnect. A client that was already connected before the reload may need to leave and rejoin.
The file was edited in the wrong instance
Hosts may expose separate live, test, and backup directories. Confirm that the path belongs to the server whose address you are joining. If a newly added line disappears after a restart, check file permissions and whether the panel is restoring a template.
The permission is not in the group
An administrator can only use commands covered by the assigned group. Being listed in Admins.cfg does not automatically grant every access level. Add the specific permission, restart, and test again; avoid solving a single missing command by granting an unrestricted group.
Using RCON instead of the in-game console
RCON is optional and separate from the local administrator assignment. Local rights come from Admins.cfg and a SteamID64-to-group mapping. Remote administration uses Rcon.cfg, which contains the RCON IP, port, password, maximum connections, and timeout settings.
Leaving the RCON password empty keeps RCON disabled. The installation reference identifies port 21114 as a common default, but the value on your server is whatever appears in its Rcon.cfg; do not assume every build or host uses that port.

Configure RCON only when remote or automated control is useful. A panel must use the same password and port that are present in Rcon.cfg. Third-party panels may also read roles from Admins.cfg, so a failed connection can involve either the RCON values or the underlying admin configuration.
RCON troubleshooting and security checks
- No connection: verify that the password is not blank, the port is reachable, and the client uses the exact IP, port, and password in
Rcon.cfg. - Connection works but commands fail: check whether the panel or integration is using the permissions and roles defined in
Admins.cfg. - Unexpected exposure: avoid publishing the RCON password, restrict access at the network or host-panel level where available, and change the password if it has been shared.
- Port assumptions: treat
21114only as a common default from the installation documentation, not as a universal requirement.
Safe maintenance after you become admin
- Keep a dated backup of
Admins.cfgbefore changing groups. - Use separate groups for owners, moderators, and event staff instead of granting everyone the owner role.
- Remove a former staff member’s
Admin=line promptly, then restart or reload as supported by the host. - Review high-impact permissions whenever the staff roster changes.
- Test a permission change with a non-critical command before using it during a live match.
The essential configuration remains simple: define a group, map your SteamID64 to it, save, and restart. Everything else—permission selection, RCON, backups, and troubleshooting—exists to keep that assignment limited, reloadable, and secure.
