You can improve the odds that Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode find and use a page by making it crawlable, indexable, easy to understand, and genuinely useful. There is no special AI schema, required llms.txt file, or guaranteed route to a citation: Google says its existing Search practices apply, and inclusion is not guaranteed.

How do I get my website cited by AI search?

For Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, start with ordinary Google Search eligibility. Google Search Central says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to be eligible as a supporting link in these features. Google also states, “There are no additional technical requirements,” meaning no requirements beyond its existing Search technical requirements. That eligibility is not a promise that Google will crawl, index, or serve a page.

The practical sequence is discovery, crawling, indexing, then serving. A page that cannot be discovered or crawled cannot readily move through that sequence; a page that is indexed may still not be selected as a supporting link. These principles describe Google’s features, not every AI answer engine or crawler.

How can I check whether Google can crawl my page?

Use this diagnostic pass for the specific URL you want Google to find. Search Console’s URL Inspection tool can show how Google sees a page and help investigate crawl and indexing issues.

  1. Check that the URL is publicly reachable. Open it without signing in and confirm it returns the intended page, not an error, redirect loop, or empty shell.
  2. Review robots.txt and access controls. Make sure your robots.txt rules, hosting configuration, firewall, and CDN do not unintentionally block Googlebot from fetching the page or its important resources.
  3. Look for accidental indexing restrictions. Check the page for a noindex directive or other access restriction if you expect it to appear in Search. A robots.txt block is not a reliable way to remove a URL from results: it controls crawling, and a blocked URL may still appear.
  4. Inspect the URL in Search Console. Use URL Inspection to review the indexed result and, where available, test the live URL and examine the rendered page Googlebot received. Investigate missing text, blocked resources, or differences from what a visitor sees.
  5. Allow time for changes to be processed. Google says changes to preview controls can take several days to several months to be recrawled and processed, depending on when its systems determine a refresh is needed.

Following the technical requirements improves eligibility; it does not compel Google to crawl, index, or show a page.

How can I make important content easier to find and understand?

Put essential information in accessible text

Make the page’s key facts and answers available in text that crawlers can access. Images and video can add context, but do not leave important information available only in an image, video, or interaction that Googlebot cannot access. Google can process JavaScript content when it is not blocked, although JavaScript SEO can be more complex; inspect the rendered result rather than assuming the content was received correctly.

Make the page’s purpose clear

Use a clear title and main heading that describe the page in language readers use. Organize the information around the reader’s task so both people and search systems can tell what the page covers. Semantic HTML can help people, including screen-reader users, but Google says perfectly semantic code is not required for it to understand a page.

Connect important pages with descriptive links

Give every important page at least one internal link from another page on your site. Use a standard HTML anchor with a valid href, and choose concise anchor text that accurately describes the destination in context. Avoid empty links and vague labels such as “click here.” Google says links help it find pages and understand their relevance.

What makes a page worth citing?

Technical access makes a page eligible to be considered; useful information gives it a reason to help a reader. Write for a defined audience and answer the question the page is meant to solve. Add original value rather than repackaging common knowledge without improving it. Where a claim depends on testing, observation, or experience, explain the method and be accurate about what was actually done.

Google’s people-first guidance emphasizes content that satisfies an intended audience, demonstrates appropriate depth, and leaves readers able to accomplish their goal. Publishing many pages without meaningful added value can fall under its scaled-content abuse policy. Accuracy, relevance, and a clear user purpose matter more than producing content at volume.

Do not write to a formula

Google says it has no preferred word count for Search. There is no need to split every article into tiny pieces, rewrite text solely for AI systems, or publish a separate page for every possible follow-up query. Choose the length and structure that fit the topic. Google says its systems can understand nuanced topics across a page and connect synonyms and general meanings to queries.

Do I need special schema markup or llms.txt for AI search?

No special schema.org markup is required for Google’s AI Overviews or AI Mode, and Google says Search ignores llms.txt and similar AI text files for visibility and ranking. Adding either solely to seek inclusion in these features is not a substitute for making a page accessible, indexable, and useful.

Structured data still has a role in Search: it can help Google understand page meaning and may make a page eligible for supported rich-result features. Use it only when it accurately reflects visible page content and complies with Google’s general and feature-specific policies. It is not a citation ticket for generative Search.

How can I measure whether the changes are helping?

Use Search Console to check indexing and crawl diagnostics, then monitor relevant page performance over time. Google says traffic from AI features is included in the overall Performance report under the “Web” search type. Google also describes a generative AI performance report as another way to understand discovery through generative AI features in Search and Discover.

Track impressions, clicks, and outcomes that matter to your site, and compare them over a useful period. Do not treat a traffic change as proof that a particular page was cited unless the reporting explicitly identifies that citation. A change can indicate a performance shift without establishing why it happened.
