Start with the display settings on the Kindle you already own: open a book, tap the top of the screen, and choose Aa or Page Display to adjust text size and layout. Make one change at a time, keeping the font, page shape, and way you hold the device that make reading feel familiar. You may not see every option on every Kindle, and some books limit what can be changed.
Adjust your Kindle’s text and page layout
On a Kindle e-reader, open a book and tap near the top of the screen to reveal the reading toolbar. Open Aa or Page Display, depending on the model and software, and try the controls available there. Amazon’s instructions cover font size and type, boldness, spacing, margins, alignment, orientation, backgrounds, and themes, but the options can vary by device. See Amazon’s text-display guidance.
- Increase the text size. Choose a size that is comfortable to read without making the lines feel awkwardly short. On supported newer devices, changing font size in device settings can also affect interface text; Amazon lists Kindle E-Reader 11th Generation and higher, Kindle Scribe, and Kindle Colorsoft for this device-level adjustment. In-book text size can also be changed from the reading toolbar. Follow the instructions for your specific model at Amazon’s Kindle font-size help page.
- Try a clear font and modest boldness. If larger text still looks faint, adjust boldness if the control is available. There is no one font or weight that suits every reader, so use your own comfort as the guide.
- Shape the page with spacing and margins. More line spacing or wider margins can make a page look less dense; tighter margins show more words at once. Change one control, read a few pages, then decide whether to keep it.
- Compare alignment and background options. Try left alignment as well as justified text, and sample the available background or theme choices. A page-like background and a familiar font can retain some of the visual character of print.
Amazon also describes pinch adjustment for changing book text size on supported reading experiences. Menus and gestures are not identical across all Kindle e-readers and apps, so consult the instructions for your device rather than assuming an app’s controls match an e-reader’s.

If a font or layout setting seems to have no effect, the book’s format may be the reason. Reflowable Kindle books adapt their text and layout to reader-selected settings. Fixed-layout titles—including print replicas, manga, comics, and some textbooks—preserve a designed page structure and may not allow the same adjustments.

Look at the title’s accessibility information for details such as whether visual appearance can be modified. Amazon says these details are based on information supplied by the publisher, so they describe the information available for that book rather than guaranteeing that every setting will work on every device. See Amazon’s guide to Kindle book accessibility information.
Keep the parts of print reading you enjoy
Improving legibility does not require giving up a familiar routine. Keep a book-style cover if you like opening and holding the Kindle that way, use your usual one-handed grip, or choose a font and background that give the screen a more page-like appearance. These choices can preserve parts of the experience, but they cannot recreate paper’s texture, weight, or every tactile detail.

Amazon says its Enhanced Typesetting system includes features such as spacing, kerning, line-height, and layout changes for large fonts. Those are rendering capabilities, not a promise that a particular setting will reduce eyestrain or feel comfortable for every reader. See Kindle Direct Publishing’s Enhanced Typesetting information.

If the remaining annoyance is holding the Kindle up or reaching to turn pages, an adjustable stand or compatible remote page turner may help change how you read. Some Kindle readers describe using a stand and remote while reading in bed, but those accounts are individual experiences—not evidence of a health or ergonomic benefit.

Before buying, check that the accessory works with your particular Kindle and case, fits the way you plan to use it, and does not block the screen or controls. A stand changes the device’s position; a remote changes how you trigger a page turn. Neither changes a fixed-layout book into reflowable text. A practical order is to tune the existing display first, adjust how the device is held or propped up next, and buy an accessory only if a clear handling problem remains.
