To reduce an iPhone’s iCloud Backup, open the backup details for that iPhone and turn off backup for selected apps whose saved data you can safely do without. Before confirming, know that Apple says this removes that app’s existing information from iCloud Backup. First check whether the space is being used by a device backup, synced photos or messages, or an old device backup—those require different fixes.
What reducing an iCloud Backup does—and does not—change
iCloud Backup contains device information that is not already synced to iCloud. App data can be included, but data an app stores in iCloud Drive is stored there separately. If iCloud Photos or Messages in iCloud is enabled, those photos, videos, and messages sync separately rather than being included in the daily device backup. If those services are not enabled, the Photos library and messages may be part of the backup. Apple explains what iCloud Backup includes.

This distinction matters because a large total iCloud storage use is not necessarily a large iPhone backup. Removing an app’s backup data reduces what is kept in the device backup; it does not remove data that the app stores separately in iCloud Drive or shrink synced libraries. Check the category that is actually using storage before deleting anything.
Turn off backup for selected apps
Use this only for apps whose backup data you can afford to lose or can restore from another source. When you confirm “Turn Off,” Apple says iCloud Backup turns off for that app and removes its information from iCloud. Apple’s storage-management instructions warn about this consequence. Some apps are always backed up and cannot be turned off.

On the iPhone, open Settings and tap your name.

Tap iCloud, then Storage or Manage Account Storage. Apple’s labels can vary with iOS version.

Tap Backups, then select the current iPhone. Depending on the version, the route may instead appear as iCloud Backup → This iPhone.

Review the apps and their backup sizes. Turn off only apps whose backup data you do not need preserved in iCloud. Before confirming Turn Off, remember that the app’s existing information in iCloud Backup will be removed. Leave needed data backed up or confirm that it is safely synced or stored elsewhere.

There is no guaranteed savings amount: the reduction depends on how much data each app has on that iPhone. Apple does not provide a general percentage or gigabyte estimate for turning off a particular app.

Check photos, messages, and other iCloud storage
Photos and videos
If iCloud Photos is off, the Photos library may be included in the iPhone backup. If you want to keep those photos and videos, Apple suggests saving them to a computer and backing them up manually, or turning Photos off in the device backup if you want the media to remain on the iPhone without being included there. Make sure you have a safe copy before excluding the library. Apple’s storage guidance also lists upgrading iCloud+ as an option when you need more space.
Messages
Messages are synced separately when Messages in iCloud is enabled. Otherwise, they may be included in the device backup. Turning off an app in the backup list is not the same as disabling a sync service; check the iCloud settings for the relevant service before changing it.

Old device backups
In Settings → your name → iCloud → Storage or Manage Account Storage → Backups, look for backups belonging to devices you no longer use. Delete one only if you are sure you will not need that restore point. Deleting the current iPhone’s backup disables iCloud Backup for that device; you can turn it on again in iCloud settings. Apple says a device backup remains available for 180 days after iCloud Backup is turned off or stops being used. See Apple’s iCloud Backup guidance.

Check Next Backup Size. It can take a few minutes for the estimate to calculate. Apple’s troubleshooting steps use this figure to determine whether the next backup will fit.

Compare the estimate with the iCloud storage available. If the next backup is still too large, review other data you do not need in the backup or choose a different backup approach.
If the backup still does not fit

Remove only data you no longer need. Revisit the app list and storage categories, but weigh the loss of backup data against the space recovered.

Use a computer backup. Apple supports backing up an iPhone to a Mac or PC. This creates a backup in a different destination; it does not make the iCloud backup itself smaller. Follow Apple’s instructions for backing up an iPhone if you want to use that method.

Add iCloud storage if you need to keep the data. Apple currently describes 5 GB of included iCloud storage, but that is an overall storage allocation, not a recommended backup size. Upgrading iCloud+ provides more capacity; it does not reduce the backup’s contents. Available plans and regional details can change. Apple lists more storage as an option when space is insufficient.
