To make your Instagram account private, turn on the private-account setting in the privacy controls. That makes new followers subject to your approval, but it does not configure who can message you, add you to group chats, tag or mention you. Review those interaction controls separately, and check your existing followers if you want to remove people who already have access.
What Instagram’s private-account setting changes
A private account requires your approval before someone can follow you and see your private-account content. It is a way to control new access, not a single switch for every kind of contact. Meta’s explanation of private accounts is at Instagram Help Center: private accounts.
Use the privacy settings visible in your Instagram app to switch the account to private. Menu names and tap sequences can differ across app versions, account types, and regions, so there is no universal path to rely on. If the labels differ, look for account privacy settings and confirm the private-account status after changing it.

Review your follower list separately. Meta describes private mode as requiring approval for new followers; it does not say that switching to private automatically removes people who already follow you.

Set message and group-chat access separately
Account privacy does not by itself decide who can send you a message or add you to a group chat. In Instagram’s message-delivery controls, review who can send you messages and where messages from people you do not follow go. Depending on the available setting, these messages may be routed to requests or not delivered. Group-chat invitations have a separate control. Meta’s guidance is in its message controls.
Choose the most restrictive available option that still suits how you use Instagram. Some messaging options may not be available to every account, so use the controls shown in your app rather than assuming every account has identical choices.

Limit tags, mentions, comments, and unwanted contact
Tags and mentions
Set who can tag or mention you in comments, captions, and stories. Meta says the choices include everyone, people you follow, or no one. This is separate from follower approval and message delivery. See Meta’s Instagram safety guidance.
Limits for unwanted interactions
Meta describes Limits as a way to hide comments and message requests from people who do not follow you or who have followed you recently. It can help when unwanted contact comes from a broader group rather than one person.

Restrict for an individual
Restrict is aimed at reducing the visibility and impact of one person’s interactions: their comments are less visible, and you receive fewer notifications about them. It is a different tool from making your account private, and it does not replace the message-delivery or tag settings. Meta explains Limits and Restrict in its safety guidance.
Teen Accounts have additional protections
Meta says Teen Accounts have private accounts by default, stricter message settings, and limits on who can tag or mention teens. The available settings and permission requirements depend on age, country, and whether parental supervision applies. Meta’s 2024 announcement, updated in 2025, says teens under 16 need parental permission to make built-in protections less strict and describes an under-18 threshold in certain countries. Its separate messaging announcement says the stricter default allows DMs or group-chat additions from people teens follow or are connected to. Read Meta’s Teen Accounts announcement and Meta’s teen message-settings announcement for the applicable conditions; do not assume one age threshold applies everywhere.

Choose settings by the kind of access you want to limit
| Control | What it governs | Options or effect described by Meta |
|---|---|---|
| Private account | New followers and access to private-account content | New followers require approval. |
| Message delivery | Who can send DMs and where messages from non-followed people go | Messages may go to requests or not be delivered, depending on available choices. |
| Group-chat controls | Who can add you to group chats | Configured separately from DM delivery. |
| Tags and mentions | Who can tag or mention you | Everyone, people you follow, or no one. |
| Limits | Comments and message requests from non-followers or recent followers | Can hide those interactions. |
| Restrict | Interactions from a particular person | Reduces comment visibility and related notifications. |
These controls address different routes to you. For a broad privacy reset, start with follower approval, then review messages, group chats, tags, and mentions; use Limits or Restrict when the unwanted interactions call for those tools.
