Windows 11 settings can reduce startup delays, background activity, and visual overhead on an older laptop—but they cannot fix every hardware bottleneck. The right first step is to find out what is slowing your particular PC, then make one change at a time and see whether it helps. Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps.
Find the bottleneck before changing settings
A slow laptop might be short on free storage, busy running startup apps, processing a demanding task, or limited by hardware. Those causes need different fixes, so avoid disabling services or changing settings at random.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On Processes, look for apps or processes using substantial CPU, memory, or disk resources while the laptop feels slow.
- Open Performance to check whether CPU, memory, or disk use is consistently high during the slowdown.
- Use that evidence to guide the steps below. If one app is responsible, close it or investigate that app rather than disabling unrelated Windows features.
Microsoft recommends checking resource use and addressing the processes that are consuming resources. Its Windows performance guidance also notes that slowdowns can have multiple causes, so more than one applicable fix may be needed.

Update Windows and check for malware
Start with built-in checks before changing how the laptop looks or uses power. Open Settings > Windows Update and install available updates. Where appropriate, check optional driver updates; for device-specific drivers, follow the laptop maker’s guidance. If malware could be contributing to the slowdown, run a quick scan in Windows Security.

Reduce startup and background activity selectively
Review apps that launch at sign-in
In Task Manager, open Startup apps and review what launches automatically. Disable only apps you do not need to open when you sign in. This may reduce startup delays and background work, but the benefit depends on what is installed and running.
Keep necessary background features working
Some apps let you restrict background permissions in Settings. Consider doing this only for apps that do not need to sync or send notifications when you are not using them. Keep security, accessibility, backup, and hardware-control software enabled unless you have a clear reason to change it; disabling something essential can remove a feature you rely on.

Free storage without deleting unfamiliar files
When the drive is low on free space, use Windows’ cleanup controls rather than manually removing files you do not recognize. Go to Settings > System > Storage, then open Storage Sense or review Temporary files. Check what Windows plans to remove before confirming. The amount of space needed varies with the apps and updates on the laptop.

Windows’ visual effects can add work for a PC. Search Windows for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows and consider selecting Adjust for best performance. This reduces visual effects and can make the interface feel more responsive, but it may look less polished. If you prefer a compromise, choose individual effects instead of turning them all off.

Use Best performance mode only when its tradeoff suits you
For demanding work while plugged in, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and choose Best performance, if that option is available. Microsoft says this can help the CPU run at higher performance when needed, but it uses more power, can drain the battery faster, and may make the laptop warmer. Switch back to a more efficient mode when battery life matters.
The alternatives serve different goals, not the same speed target. Microsoft describes Best Power Efficiency as limiting background activity to reduce power use; Energy saver limits background processes and can dim the screen. Optimize the drive with Windows’ built-in tool
Search for Defragment and Optimize Drives, select the drive, and choose Optimize. Use Windows’ built-in tool rather than manual defragmentation commands or third-party “optimizer” utilities.
Restart, then judge the result under the same conditions
Close apps and browser tabs you are not using. If the laptop still feels slow, restart it, then try the same task that exposed the problem. To assess a change, compare performance under the same routine and workload; a different task or number of open apps can make the comparison misleading. If a setting makes something you rely on stop working, restore it.

Know when settings are not enough
Age alone does not determine whether a laptop can run Windows 11 or how well it will perform. Microsoft’s Windows 11 compatibility documentation lists minimums including a compatible 64-bit processor at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores, 4 GB of memory, 64 GB of storage, TPM 2.0, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, and supported graphics and display requirements. These are installation requirements, not a promise of comfortable performance; more capable hardware may be needed for particular apps. The compatibility cookbook page was last updated on 2022-08-23, so check Microsoft’s current published specifications when assessing eligibility.
If the laptop meets Windows 11’s minimums but remains slow after appropriate cleanup and settings changes, its hardware may be the limiting factor. Microsoft explicitly warns that older hardware may not improve significantly from software steps and says an upgrade may be the better long-term option. Whether any upgrade is possible or worthwhile depends on the exact model and its components; age alone is not enough to recommend a specific part.
