To help a walkie-talkie battery last longer, follow the charging and storage instructions for your exact radio and battery. Charge time, compatible chargers, and care requirements vary by model and battery chemistry. For example, Motorola’s T600/T605 guidance applies to its included NiMH pack—not to every walkie-talkie.
Start with your radio’s exact model and battery
Check the model name and the battery type printed on the pack or listed in the manual. Then use that model’s manual to confirm the compatible charger, charging method, charge time, and storage conditions. Motorola’s consumer radio user guides let you find instructions by series.
Charge times are not interchangeable across models, even within one manufacturer. Motorola’s T600/T605 manual gives instructions for an included NiMH pack, while its CLP series guide provides different estimates for Li-ion batteries and different charger types.
Charge the battery according to its model
Motorola T600/T605: switch the radio off
For the T600/T605 NiMH battery pack, Motorola recommends turning the radio off while it charges. The manual says a fully empty pack takes about eight hours to charge. If you leave the radio on, a deeply depleted battery may not have recovered enough charge to transmit; wait for the battery meter to reach one bar before trying to transmit. Why another model may charge faster or slower
Motorola’s CLP series guide estimates four hours for a standard Li-ion battery and 5.5 hours for a high-capacity Li-ion battery on a single-unit charger. For a multi-unit charger, its estimates are 2.5 hours and four hours, respectively. Give a T600/T605 battery time to adjust after temperature changes
If a T600/T605 NiMH pack has moved between hot and cold conditions, do not charge it immediately. Motorola advises waiting until it acclimates, which usually takes about 20 minutes. This is guidance for that battery pack; check your own radio’s manual for any temperature limits or waiting period.

Do not leave a T600/T605 on its charger indefinitely
For optimal battery life, Motorola says to remove the T600/T605 from its charger within 16 hours and not to store the radio while it is connected. This is a specific instruction for the T600/T605, not a universal overnight-charging rule. For another model, follow its own manual.

For the T600/T605 NiMH pack, Motorola advises charging unused batteries once every three months. Before storing the radio, remove the batteries. Store the battery in low humidity, between -20°C and 35°C, away from damp conditions and corrosive materials. These figures and steps apply to the T600/T605 guidance; follow the storage instructions for other battery chemistries and models.

Replace a battery or charger only with a compatible one
If the battery no longer meets your needs or the original charger is missing or damaged, check compatibility against the exact radio model before buying a replacement. Motorola lists an 800 mAh NiMH pack as a spare for compatible consumer radios, and its T600 Series product page identifies the included packs as 800 mAh NiMH. Neither capacity nor physical fit makes a pack universal.
Chargers, trays, docks, and power supplies also differ. Search for accessories by the radio’s full model name and verify the manual’s compatibility details rather than assuming a charger advertised as universal will work. Motorola’s consumer two-way radio accessories page is a starting point for its listed accessories.
