To get more from an online course, turn its lessons, deadlines, feedback, and communication tools into a repeatable study routine: map the course, plan the week, actively work with the material, ask for help, and use feedback to choose your next step. Time logged in is not the same as learning; check whether you can explain or apply what you studied.

Map the course before the work piles up

At the start of a course, spend a short session finding the places you will need repeatedly. Labels and layouts vary by platform, so look for the function rather than a specific button name.

  • Course modules, lesson materials, and any stated learning outcomes.
  • Assignment instructions, due dates, and the grade or feedback view.
  • Announcements, discussion areas, group-work spaces, and live-session links.
  • Instructor contact details, office hours, technical support, and accessibility support.

Put recurring deadlines and live sessions in one calendar. A paper calendar, digital calendar, or planner can all work; the useful part is having a reliable place to see what is coming.

Turn course outcomes into a weekly plan

Rather than writing “study biology,” choose a few specific outcomes for the week, then translate each into actions you can complete. For example, “explain how the process works” might become reading one section, watching a lesson while taking notes, and attempting practice questions without looking at the answers first.

  1. Check the course page for deadlines, live sessions, and assigned work.
  2. Choose a small number of learning goals tied to the course outcomes.
  3. Break each goal into visible tasks, such as reading, practice, drafting, or reviewing feedback.
  4. Place tasks in realistic time blocks and leave a buffer before due dates.
  5. Recheck the plan during the week and adjust if a task takes longer than expected.

Planning and time management are widely discussed self-regulated learning strategies. A 2025 systematic review by Ahmad Faza and Ilyana Agri Lestari synthesized 121 articles on digital self-regulated learning, but it does not establish that a particular planner—or buying one—improves learning outcomes. Use whatever system you will actually maintain.

Make study sessions active

Watching a lesson or moving through slides can feel productive without showing what you have understood. Build in small checks that require you to retrieve, explain, or apply the material. The tactics below are practical ways to monitor your learning; they are not each individually verified as guaranteed techniques by the cited reviews.

  • Before: Write one thing you want to understand or be able to do by the end of the session.
  • During: Pause to summarize a section in your own words, explain a concept aloud, or attempt a practice question before checking the answer.
  • After: Note one point you can explain and one question or gap you still need to resolve.

If you cannot explain a key idea without rereading the lesson, return to the relevant section or ask a focused question. This gives you a more useful signal than simply counting minutes spent on the platform.

Use course communication and ask for help early

Online study does not have to mean studying alone. Use the communication and collaboration options your course provides: contribute to discussions, join group work, attend office hours, or contact the instructor through the approved channel. The What Works Clearinghouse’s 2019 U.S. Department of Education practice guide recommends that educators “Incorporate technology that models and fosters self-regulated learning strategies.” The guide is written for postsecondary educators and course designers; as a student, you can act on that principle by using course tools to ask questions, work with classmates, and keep track of your learning.

Make help requests specific. Say which lesson or task you are working on, what you tried, and the point where you got stuck. A question such as “I followed the example through the second step, but I don’t understand why this value changes—could you clarify?” gives someone a clear place to begin. The same 2019 guide supports interaction, while Faza and Lestari’s 2025 review includes help-seeking among self-regulated learning strategies; neither means that using a particular platform feature guarantees engagement or better results.

Turn feedback into a next step

When a quiz, rubric, or instructor comment shows a gap, use it while the task is still fresh. Identify the misconception or skill involved, return to the relevant course material, and try a new example or revise the work if revisions are allowed. Record the question you still have if the feedback is unclear, then raise it through the course’s usual help channel.

This is a practical way to act on feedback and reflection, not a promise that any one response will produce a particular grade. The 2019 What Works Clearinghouse guide recommends timely, targeted feedback for educators to provide; Faza and Lestari’s review also identifies reflection as part of digital self-regulated learning.

Check accessibility and device demands

Online access does not guarantee that course materials or interfaces are usable for every student. A 2025 literature review by Amy Lomellini, Patrick R. Lowenthal, Chareen Snelson, and coauthors examined 91 sources on accessible and inclusive online higher education. It highlights clear organization, self-assessment, detailed rubrics, and plain language as beneficial course features.

Where available and useful to you, try captions, transcripts, keyboard navigation, or readable display settings. If a required file, activity, or platform feature creates a barrier, contact your instructor or institutional accessibility office promptly and describe what is inaccessible and what would help. Available features and appropriate accommodations depend on your needs, the platform, and your institution; do not assume every course has the same options.

If you are comparing resources offered within a course, consider whether each aligns with course goals, works with your device and data access, provides practice and feedback, offers useful support, fits your schedule, and has any relevant cost. There is no universal “best” platform for every student or course.

Review your routine once a week

Set aside a few minutes to check progress and decide what to change. A 2025 brief by Susan Bickerstaff, Akilah H. Thompson, Keena P. Walters, and Jenivee Gastelum draws on student interviews at eight broad-access institutions; it emphasizes active learning, meaningful instructor-student interaction, and adjusting study strategies. Those interviews describe the brief’s context, not a population-wide estimate.

  • What did I finish, and what remains?
  • Which material can I now retrieve, explain, or apply?
  • What feedback or question needs follow-up?
  • What is one change that would make next week’s plan more workable?

Evidence supports the value of self-regulated learning as a broad area of practice, but it should not be mistaken for a guarantee about a particular tool or tactic. A 2025 meta-analysis by Yingying Zhao, Yixun Li, Shuai Ma, Zhihong Xu, and Bingsheng Zhang combined 42 studies from 37 articles, comprising 115 effect sizes and 11,014 students. It found a small overall correlation (r = .14) between self-regulated learning strategies and achievement in online and blended learning. This is an association, not proof that a particular strategy causes higher grades.
