The most dependable way to build crowns in The Witcher 3 is to take contracts, loot selectively as you explore, and sell each item to the merchant who specialises in it. Optional wagers and a late-game bandit circuit can add more, but the wagers pay fixed quest maximums and the bandit circuit depends on your game version. The figures below come from named game guides. They are approximate and describe specific quests or loops, not average player earnings.
Start with contracts
Contracts posted on notice boards are the most reliable early income. Completing one pays crowns and often leaves a monster trophy you can sell. Prima Games’ guide puts several Velen contracts at about 250 crowns each. The guide’s text consulted for this article is undated, so treat that figure as a reference point rather than a current price.
Negotiating rewards and trophies
- Where the contract giver allows it, negotiate the reward before you accept the job. Completing the contract pays the negotiated amount.
- Keep spare trophies for sale, but check the trophy’s description in your inventory first.
- Prima’s guide notes that some trophy bonuses may apply when you are mounted on Roach. The guide does not list the bonus amounts.
Loot selectively while you explore
Points of interest and treasure hunts are worth visiting once your level is appropriate for the area. Enemy drops and chests will give you weapons, armour, valuables and spare trophies. Carry the items with the best value per unit of inventory weight and leave low-value pieces behind when your pack is close to its limit.
Match each item to the right merchant
Merchants buy by specialty, and the price you receive also depends on region, item type and item origin. Each merchant also has a limited purse. Prima’s guide explains the constraint directly:
#1 Best Overall
- Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity.
- Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world.
“If a Merchant’s funds are depleted, they are temporarily unable to purchase additional items from you.”
Funds replenish over time, so split your sales between vendors or return to a merchant later instead of dumping everything in one place.

| Merchant | Best items to sell | Notes from the guide |
|---|---|---|
| Blacksmith | Weapons | Suited to weapons by specialty |
| Armorer | Armour | Suited to armour by specialty |
| Innkeeper | Food and drink | Suited to food and drink by specialty |
What to keep
- Crafting and alchemy materials. Do not sell every ingredient early, because you will need some of them later.
- Quest items, diagrams and mutagens. Selling these can cost you progress or useful recipes.
Optional wagers
Gwent wagers, the Velen Fists of Fury fistfights and the Crow’s Perch races all add crowns. Prima’s guide gives maximum totals for two of them. These are quest-level figures, not a rate you can expect per hour.

Late-game bandit circuit (version-sensitive)
Gamer Guides, whose page was last updated on 22 August 2024, describes a repeatable bandit loop for late-game play. The guide lists repeat-spawn locations at:
Rank #3
- If you buy this game, you will receive a free next-gen update on December 14th!
- Play as a highly trained monster slayer for hire.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.
- northeast of Alness
- southwest of Drahim Castle
- southeast of Ursten
- north of Giant’s Toes
The guide estimates late-game weapons at 50–70 crowns each and about 600–800 crowns for a full circuit. It also states that Devil’s Pit stopped respawning as of Patch 4.0. Before committing time to the loop, confirm that enemies still respawn in your version. Because the circuit is an optional grind, it makes sense only once contracts and sales no longer cover your needs.
