Vanilla Minecraft has no gun recipe, so there is no crafting grid that produces a firearm. On Bedrock Edition you can get gun-like weapons in two ways: install an existing weapon add-on, or build a custom item and projectile yourself with resource and behavior packs. This guide covers Bedrock only. Java Edition uses a different modding system that the steps below do not apply to.
Choose your route first
The right method depends on whether you want a ready-made weapon or want to design one. Installing is quick. Building takes file work and testing.

Option 1: Install an existing weapon add-on
Minecraft’s official guidance says add-ons can add custom blocks, items, mobs, recipes, and other game content. Weapon add-ons work the same way: you activate the pack in a world, and its items become available.

Check what is available before you buy or download
Minecraft’s creator pages say free add-ons exist and that Marketplace content is also available. One example they feature is Weapons Expansion SCI-FI, described as offering craftable sci-fi weapons. Treat that as an example of weapon-themed content, not as a guaranteed listing. Availability and compatibility can change, so check the in-game catalog before you plan a build around a specific pack. These are sci-fi weapons, not realistic firearms.

Building your own item is a developer task. Microsoft’s custom-item tutorial recommends that you already know how resource packs, behavior packs, and add-on development work before you start.
Prerequisites
- A Bedrock Edition install with a test world you can afford to break.
- A plain-text editor and a way to organize folders.
- Graphics for the item, such as an icon and any texture you want to use.
- Patience with file names. Pack structure and file locations must match what the game expects.
The general workflow
- Create a behavior pack folder and a resource pack folder.
- Create the item file structure inside the packs, with manifests in each.
- Add the graphics the item needs.
- Place both packs in the development pack folders.
- Launch Bedrock Edition.
- Activate both packs in a world.
- Get the item with the
/givecommand, using Creative mode, or Survival with cheats enabled.
Add projectile behavior
Microsoft’s projectile tutorial documents the components that control projectile behavior, on both items and entities. The minecraft:shooter item component defines the ammunition your item uses, and it requires minecraft:use_modifiers. Projectile items and entities use their own projectile components.

The documentation provides components and sample implementations. It does not provide a complete firearm, and a few commands will not create a finished gun. Expect to design the item’s behavior, sounds, and balance yourself.
Troubleshooting
- The pack does not appear in the world’s pack list. Recheck the folder names and manifests. The packs must sit in the correct development folders before you launch the game.
- The item does not show up with
/give. Confirm that both the behavior pack and the resource pack are activated in the world, and that you are in Creative mode or have cheats enabled in Survival. - The item does not fire. Check that the Custom Projectiles experimental toggle is on and that the
minecraft:shooterandminecraft:use_modifierscomponents are both present.
Scope of this guide
These steps follow Minecraft’s official add-on documentation and Microsoft’s Bedrock tutorials. They do not cover Java Edition mods, mod loaders, or cross-platform compatibility. If you play on Java Edition, look for instructions specific to that edition.
