Set the browser’s Search engine or Default search engine setting to Google. The path depends on the device: Chrome uses Settings > Search engine, Firefox uses Settings > Search > Default search engine, Safari on Mac uses Safari > Settings > Search, and Safari on iPhone uses Settings > Search > Search Engine. These controls determine which provider handles address-bar and Safari searches; they are separate from your device’s default-browser setting.
Use the section for your device below, then follow the troubleshooting steps if Google does not remain selected.
Which setting changes your searches?
Browsers distinguish between the app used to open web links and the service that processes searches typed into an address bar or search field.

- Default browser: The app that opens links from email, messages, documents, or other apps.
- Default search engine: The provider used when you type words into the browser’s address bar or search box.
To make searches go to Google, change the second setting. Changing your default browser will not necessarily change its search engine.

Set Google as Chrome’s default search engine on a computer
Use Chrome Settings
- Open Chrome.
- Select More, shown as the three-dot menu (⋮).
- Choose Settings.
- Open the Search engine section.
- Select Google as the search engine used in the address bar.
After the selection is saved, type a test phrase into Chrome’s address bar and press Enter. The results page should be from Google. A search typed into a page’s own search box can still use that website’s search system; the browser setting controls the address bar and Chrome’s built-in search field.
Replace a different engine when Google is not the current choice
Chrome provides additional controls under Search engine. Choose Change when Chrome presents a direct selector. If the current provider must be replaced or the list needs attention, open Manage search engines and site search, then select Google from the available choices. The wording and layout can vary slightly between Chrome releases, but the control remains in the Search engine area rather than in general privacy or appearance settings.
Confirm that you changed the correct Chrome profile
Chrome settings are associated with the profile in which you change them. If several people use separate profiles on the same computer, switch to the profile that performs the searches and repeat the setting there. Test from that same profile before assuming the choice failed.

- Open the Chrome app.
- Tap More, the three-dot menu.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Search engine.
- Choose Google.
Return to a tab, tap the address bar, enter a test search, and submit it. The Android Chrome app now sends address-bar searches to Google. This is an in-app setting, so changing a search preference in another browser does not change Chrome’s choice.

Set Google in Chrome on iPhone or iPad
- Open the Chrome app.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu).
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Search engine.
- Select Google.
Test by entering a phrase in Chrome’s address bar. If you also use Safari, change Safari’s setting separately; Chrome’s selection does not control Safari.
Set Google as Safari’s search engine on a Mac
Change regular browsing searches
- Open Safari.
- In the macOS menu bar, choose Safari.
- Choose Settings.
- Click Search.
- Set Search engine to Google.
Open a normal Safari window and search from the Smart Search field to verify the change. Safari’s search-engine control is inside Safari’s own settings, not the macOS setting for which app opens web links.
Set the separate Private Browsing engine
Safari on Mac can use a different provider for Private Browsing windows. In the same Safari > Settings > Search area, review the separate Private Browsing search engine setting and choose Google there if private windows should use Google too.

If regular windows use Google but a Private Browsing window opens results from another provider, the normal setting is working; the private-window setting is simply different. Change both settings when you want identical behavior.

Use Safari’s search-field menu as an alternative
Some Safari versions also let you choose a provider from the magnifying-glass menu in the search field. Select Google there when that menu is available. The exact presentation can differ by Safari version, so the Search pane in Safari Settings is the dependable place to review both regular and Private Browsing choices.
Set Google as Safari’s search engine on iPhone
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Tap Search.
- Tap Search Engine.
- Tap Google.
- Go back to save the choice.
This is an iPhone system setting used for web searches, including Safari. Open Safari, enter a test phrase in its search field, and submit it to confirm that the results now come from Google. Because the choice is made in iPhone Settings, changing Chrome’s in-app setting does not change Safari.
Set Google as Firefox’s default search engine
- Open Firefox.
- Open the Firefox menu.
- Choose Settings (called Preferences in some versions).
- Select Search.
- Find Default search engine.
- Choose Google from the drop-down list.
Enter a test phrase in Firefox’s address bar and submit it. Firefox uses the selected provider for ordinary address-bar and search-bar searches.
Understand Firefox search shortcuts
Firefox allows separate search shortcuts and alternative engines. A shortcut can intentionally send one search to another provider even while Google remains the default. If only searches using a particular shortcut differ, review the shortcut or search-engine button you selected rather than changing the default again.

Why Google keeps changing back
If the selection appears to save but later reverts, repeatedly choosing Google may only hide the cause. Check the scope and possible overrides in this order.
1. You changed a different browser or device
Search-engine settings are not universal. Chrome on a computer, Chrome on a phone, Safari, and Firefox each have their own control. On iPhone, Safari follows the system path in Settings > Search > Search Engine, while Chrome keeps its choice inside the Chrome app. Change the setting in the browser where the unwanted results appear.
2. Safari Private Browsing uses its own provider
On a Mac, compare a regular Safari window with a Private Browsing window. If only private windows use another provider, set the separate Private Browsing search engine in Safari’s Search settings.

3. A Firefox extension changed the default
Mozilla notes that Firefox extensions can set a new default search engine. Review installed extensions and identify any that manage or redirect searches. Disable or remove the extension responsible, restart or reopen Firefox if needed, and then select Google again under Settings (or Preferences) > Search > Default search engine. If the setting changes again after re-enabling one extension, that extension is the likely override.

4. Chrome detects unwanted software
Chrome says an unexpected search-engine change may indicate malware. Treat an unexplained change as a security issue rather than a cosmetic preference: review recently installed software and browser additions, remove anything you do not recognize, and use the security tools you trust for your operating system. After addressing the cause, return to Chrome’s Settings > Search engine and choose Google again.
5. A work or school administrator controls Chrome
Chrome also notes that an organization can manage search engines. On a work or school device, a policy may force a particular provider or prevent changes. In that case, the setting can revert even when the menu accepts Google. Contact the organization’s administrator; changing the browser repeatedly will not override a management policy.
6. A shortcut or website search is being mistaken for the default
Firefox shortcuts and searches entered into a website’s own box can use a different provider by design. Test with the browser’s address bar in a normal window. That isolates the default-engine setting from a site-specific search form or a deliberately selected shortcut.
Verification checklist
Use this short test after changing any browser:
- Close or leave the settings page after selecting Google.
- Open the correct browser and the correct profile, if the browser supports profiles.
- Use the address bar rather than a website’s search box.
- Enter a neutral test phrase and submit it.
- Check the results provider.
- On a Mac, repeat the test in a Private Browsing window if that mode matters to you.
- On iPhone, test Safari separately from Chrome because their settings are independent.

When to stop changing the menu
If Google works immediately after selection but changes back later, the menu is not the central problem. A separate private-browsing preference, Firefox extension, Chrome malware issue, or managed-device policy is overriding the choice. Identify which of those conditions matches the symptom, correct that condition, and then verify with a fresh address-bar search.
