Ghost does not automatically translate posts or pages when you change the publication language or add language-specific routes. You need to create the translated content yourself—or use a translation service—and decide how readers will find and switch between language versions. The right setup depends mainly on whether each language will have different content or translated versions of the same content.
What Ghost translates—and what it does not
It helps to separate three kinds of language support:

- Theme text: Ghost themes can translate recurring labels and interface strings with Ghost’s
translatehelper and the publication language. This does not translate article text. Ghost lists Tripoli, Galerie, and Basho as premium themes with translation support. See Ghost’s theme translation documentation. - Ghost-generated interface text: Ghost’s publication-language setting is used for supported generated components. In a November 5, 2024 announcement, Ghost said Portal, newsletters, search, and comments would be translated into the configured language, reporting support for 60 languages at that time. Ghost also noted that some translations could be incomplete; check the current interface in your target language before relying on full coverage. See Ghost’s internationalization announcement.
- Posts and pages: Editorial content must be translated through your own publishing workflow or a service. Neither a theme translation helper nor a language setting creates or links translated posts and pages.
Ghost’s translation guide recommends choosing a publishing setup based on whether the language editions contain different material or the same material in translation.
Choose how to organize language editions
Separate Ghost installs for different content
If each language will publish different material, Ghost recommends one install per language, describing this as the easiest approach to start and the most sustainable long-term in its experience. Ghost’s guidance is: “If you plan on publishing different content in each language, we recommend one Ghost install per language.” Separate installs keep editorial content and language settings distinct. You will need to coordinate shared branding, navigation, newsletters, analytics, and maintenance across them.

A translation service for the same content
If you intend to publish the same material in multiple languages, Ghost names WeGlot and Transifex as examples of translation services. Those examples are not a guarantee of a particular integration, feature set, or price. Confirm that a service supports your Ghost setup and the workflow you want before adopting it.
One Ghost install with language-specific sections
Ghost’s dynamic-routing documentation describes setting the base URL to the default language and adding a language route such as /de/ for posts tagged with the private tag #de. This can organize and route language-specific entries in one install. It does not translate entries or identify which posts are equivalent across languages.
Before publishing, set conventions for language tags, URL patterns, translated slugs, and which entries count as translations of one another. You also need to decide how readers will move between versions. A route or tag alone does not create a language selector; that requires theme, navigation, or integration work.

Ghost’s read-only Content API makes published posts and pages available to other clients. A developer can use it to build a frontend that filters entries by language, maps translated versions, and renders a language selector. The API delivers content; it is not a translation manager, so the mapping and interface require implementation and ongoing maintenance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan translated posts, pages, and navigation
Translated versions need deliberate relationships and navigation. Decide how editors will identify matching versions, what a reader sees when a translation is missing, and how the site links between language editions. A language switcher should lead to the equivalent post or page when one exists—not merely to the other language’s homepage.
Ghost pages are independent static resources that use the same editor as posts. They work well for About, Contact, landing, and terms pages, but publishing a page does not automatically add it to site navigation, the homepage, or tag and author collections. Add links to each language’s pages and make the corresponding versions reachable from one another where appropriate. See Ghost’s pages documentation.
If email is part of the publication, Ghost’s translation guide recommends creating multiple newsletters for different language audiences. For themes, Ghost also advises avoiding hardcoded text where possible and using custom theme settings so site owners can supply translated labels.
Set the publication language without mistaking it for translation
Set the publication language in Ghost’s General settings. Ghost says this setting tells search engines what language the publication’s content is in and is used for supported generated interface components. It does not create translated posts or pages, nor connect language variants. For a single publication containing several languages, plan carefully how the configured publication language represents the site; do not assume it describes every individual entry.
Choose with these trade-offs in mind
| Approach | Best fit | What you still need to handle |
|---|---|---|
| Separate Ghost install per language | Different editorial content by language | Coordinate branding, navigation, newsletters, analytics, and maintenance across installs. |
| Translation service | The same material published in multiple languages | Verify Ghost compatibility, translation workflow, update handling, and current service terms. |
| One install with language routes and tags | Language sections managed within one Ghost install | Create translations, define route and tag conventions, connect equivalents, and build language navigation. |
| Custom frontend using the Content API | A tailored language-aware reading experience | Develop and maintain content filtering, version relationships, and the language selector. |
Ghost’s recommendations distinguish different content from equivalent translated content; the best choice also depends on how editors work, how many versions need updates, and how much custom navigation you are prepared to maintain. The cited guidance does not establish a current price or feature comparison between WeGlot and Transifex.
