To make dried kelp in Minecraft, harvest kelp underwater, then place it in a furnace, smoker, or campfire. Each of those blocks can dry kelp; the official guide does not compare their speed or fuel use.
How to harvest kelp
- Find kelp growing in an ocean. Minecraft’s guide says it appears in most oceans.
- Break the bottom block of a kelp stalk. The kelp above it breaks as well, making it easier to collect the stalk. Minecraft’s guide to dried kelp describes this method.
How to dry kelp
- Open a furnace, smoker, or campfire.
- Place the kelp in the block to dry it into dried kelp. The official guide lists all three options but does not establish that one is faster or more fuel-efficient than the others.
What dried kelp is used for
Eat it or compost it
Dried kelp can be eaten for a small hunger top-up, restoring half a hunger point and a small amount of saturation according to Minecraft’s guide. It can also be added to a composter.
Craft a dried-kelp block
The 2023 Minecraft guide says to craft a dried-kelp block from nine dried-kelp items. Older Java Edition 1.13 release notes give an eight-item recipe, so those historical notes do not establish the recipe for your current edition or version. The available official sources do not resolve whether this difference reflects an edition-specific recipe or a recipe change. The Java Edition 1.13 release notes document the older recipe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Minecraft’s 2023 article describes dried-kelp blocks as fuel for furnaces, blast furnaces, and smokers. It states that a block burns for 200 seconds and can smelt 20 items. These figures come from that article, which does not specify an edition or game version.

Edition and version notes
Minecraft’s how-to article was published on April 20, 2023, and does not identify a game edition or version. Historical Java and Bedrock notes show that dried kelp and kelp blocks existed in those versions, but they do not establish that current recipes match across editions. If the block recipe matters, check the recipe in the edition and version you are playing rather than assuming the older eight-item note applies.
