Build the feeling, not a copy of a film scene: choose a few natural motifs, shape a route that reveals the island gradually, and add small signs of daily life. The result can feel quiet, magical, and lived in while remaining your own design—not an official Studio Ghibli or Nintendo collaboration.
Start with a mood, not a movie set
Write a one-sentence brief before placing paths or furniture. For example: “A quiet village tucked between a forest trail and a river.” Pick two or three recurring ideas—perhaps woodland, water, gardens, or a village edge—and a limited color palette to tie the island together.
Use films as atmosphere references: think about calm, wonder, or the sense that a place has its own daily rhythms. Avoid building around a protected character, logo, or exact film composition. Nintendo describes Animal Crossing as a place to “have fun creating a world of your own,” which is a useful principle for making the island original. Nintendo’s Animal Crossing series page

Design a walk that rewards exploration
A convincing island is more than a collection of photo spots. Plan how a visitor moves through it: start at an arrival point, follow a main route, pause somewhere, then reach a destination. Bends, short transitions, and partial views can suggest that there is more to discover beyond the current screen.

- Get Building - Experience a robust new crafting system - collect materials to construct everything from furniture to tools!
- Create Your Perfect Getaway - Craft everything from tools to creature comforts as you create and customize your island community.
- Explore Your Island - Collect bugs, decorate your paradise throughout the day, or enjoy sunset on the beach while fishing in the ocean.
- Play Together - Up to eight players can reside on an island; four residents of the same island can play together simultaneously on a single system.
- Mark the arrival. Decide what the player sees first and where the main route begins.
- Add one or two pauses. Plan a small clearing, garden, bridge approach, or other place to stop.
- Choose a destination. Give the route somewhere to lead, such as a tucked-away home or village gathering place.
- Test the walk in-game. Follow the route before committing to extensive terraforming. Adjust any stretch that feels confusing, empty, or too exposed.
Let areas connect through changes in scenery rather than making every spot a separate, fully decorated set. A path that leaves a garden and enters trees, for example, gives the island a sense of journey.
Let nature provide the structure
Start with the landscape and fit buildings and furniture into it. Use planted areas, water edges, and changes in elevation as the visual framework; then place paths, homes, and gathering spots where they seem to belong in that setting. The goal is a coherent world, not a checklist of features.
Leave some breathing room. Trees, flowers, rocks, and water can make a scene feel rich without filling every open patch. Open space gives the eye a rest and makes a carefully placed object stand out. If foliage hides the route or a landmark, clear a sightline rather than adding more decoration.

Add small signs of everyday life
Use ordinary objects to imply that villagers and visitors actually use the space. A bench near a path, a garden beside a home, or a few items arranged around a stopping place can make an area feel inhabited without turning it into a display shelf.
Group details where they support the scene. A single useful-looking cluster often reads more clearly than many unrelated objects spread across the island. Keep the most important visual cue—such as a doorway, path, or view—easy to notice.
Use custom designs sparingly and make them your own
Custom designs can add wayfinding, ground detail, or textiles, but a small set of repeated patterns usually gives a more unified impression than many competing motifs. Create original signs and textures that fit your palette instead of reproducing film artwork or branding.

Nintendo’s March 12, 2026 announcement describes original designs in the Custom Designs Portal on its official island. It says a Nintendo Switch Online membership enables access to six designs featured in that announcement; that is the access condition Nintendo stated for those designs, not a general claim about every custom design. Review the island before sharing it
Walk the route again and remove clutter that blocks a view or makes navigation harder. Capture both an overall view that communicates how areas connect and close-up images that show the textures and small details.
If you use Nintendo’s Island Tour Creator, its instructions require a Nintendo Account and say that only unedited screenshots and videos captured directly on a Nintendo Switch can be used. For Dream visits, Nintendo says visitors cannot change the owner’s actual island, but they may take designs displayed in the Custom Designs Portal. Consider that distinction before displaying designs you do not want visitors to copy. Nintendo Dream guidance

A fan island can take inspiration from a mood without implying endorsement by Nintendo or Studio Ghibli. Nintendo’s business and organization guidance says users may not obtain financial benefit from use of the game, including by selling custom designs or earning advertising revenue with game content. Its separate guidance covers gameplay footage and screenshots shared on appropriate platforms; that is not blanket permission for monetized use. Read the current wording of both policies before making commercial plans. Nintendo business and organization guidance Nintendo game-content guidelines
