The biggest gains on a large-battery phone come from a short list of changes: dim and shorten the screen, keep Android’s adaptive battery tools on, and cut optional high-drain sessions. Switch off connectivity features only when you don’t need them at that moment. Capacity alone doesn’t predict runtime. Google’s Android Help says, “Your device’s battery life depends on the type of device you have.” No official source gives a universal hours-saved figure for these changes, so this guide ranks them by how much function each one costs you instead.
Start with the screen
Google lists screen brightness and screen timeout among its core Android battery-saving settings, and they cost you almost nothing.
- Brightness: lower it to a level that is still comfortable. Automatic brightness can help if it suits the places you use the phone.
- Screen timeout: shorten it so an unattended display turns off sooner.
- Keyboard sounds and vibration: turning these off saves a little power. Skip this if you like the feedback.
Exact menu names vary by manufacturer. Look under Display (or Display & brightness) in Settings, or search Settings for “brightness” and “timeout”.

Find what is actually draining the battery
Open Settings, then Battery, then battery usage. Check usage by app before you restrict anything. If one app stands out, review that app’s background permission instead of limiting every app. Blanket restrictions are the usual reason notifications arrive late.

Keep Adaptive Battery and app optimization on
On Pixel phones, Adaptive Battery learns which apps you use and limits background activity for the rest. Google’s Pixel help says this can reduce performance or delay notifications, and that some steps apply to Android 14 and later. Learning takes time, so judge it after a few days, not a few hours. Other makers have their own equivalents, and their names and locations differ, so check your manufacturer’s support pages. Don’t treat Pixel menu paths as universal.
Use Battery Saver when you need extra reserve
Google describes the trade-off plainly: “When Battery Saver is on, it turns on Dark theme and limits or turns off background activity, so some visual effects, certain features, network connections, and apps may experience delays in this mode.”

It works best as a temporary tool for a long day away from a charger, not a permanent setting. After enabling it, confirm that the alerts you depend on, such as messages, calendar reminders and banking codes, still arrive on time.
Trade connectivity for battery only where it makes sense

Use airplane mode only when you truly don’t need mobile connectivity, for example while the phone is idle somewhere with no signal need.

Cut optional high-drain activity
Google’s Pixel low-battery guidance names the activities that drain charge fastest:
- prolonged navigation and prolonged GPS use
- video and streaming
- graphics-heavy games
- tethering (hotspot)
- heavy camera use
When the battery is running low, postpone the optional ones, such as a game or a download. Don’t give up something you need right then, like navigation on the way home. A large cell gives you headroom, but these activities still use it up fast.

Keep the phone cool
Google says a hot phone can drain faster, even when it isn’t in use, and that heat-related drain can damage the battery. Keep the phone out of hot cars and direct sun. Take it out of a thick case if it runs warm while charging or gaming. Heat is a long-term battery-care issue as well as a runtime one.

- Lower brightness and shorten the screen timeout.
- Check battery usage by app and fix any outliers.
- Leave Adaptive Battery and default app optimization on.
- Prefer Wi-Fi, and turn off Bluetooth only when nothing is connected.
- Enable Battery Saver for days when you need extra reserve.
- Turn off location or use airplane mode only when you don’t need them.
Accessories don’t change any of this. A power bank adds charge but doesn’t reduce drain. If runtime suddenly drops far below what you’re used to, look at app usage and heat first, then contact the manufacturer about a possible battery fault.
