Make the podcast’s media source repeat in the streaming software that sends your show to YouTube. YouTube’s playlist Loop control is for viewers watching a video or playlist; it does not make the source in your live encoder start over. Before going live, check that the source restarts and its audio and video continue in the software preview.

Why the stream stops when the playlist ends

An encoder-based YouTube live stream receives content from your streaming software. If the software reaches the end of its media source and has nothing else to send, the feed may go quiet or stop; the YouTube watch-page playlist loop setting does not change that source. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key to connect the encoder to Live Control Room, where you can check the incoming feed (YouTube’s encoder setup instructions).

There are two different kinds of “playlist” to keep straight: the podcast episodes or media items you play in your software, and YouTube’s viewer-side playlist controls. Only the former is relevant to making the creator’s live feed continue after the final item.

Set the podcast source to repeat

  1. Open the streaming software feeding YouTube. Find the media or playlist source that plays the podcast recording or episodes.
  2. Enable repeat or loop for that source, if available. The exact label and location vary by software and version. If your show is assembled from separate sources or scenes rather than one playlist source, check what happens when the final item ends; scene sequences and media playlists may behave differently.
  3. Test the end of the sequence in the preview. Confirm the source restarts at the intended point and that both audio and video keep playing. YouTube recommends checking the preview before starting the stream (Get started with live streaming).
  4. Connect and start the encoder stream. Use the server URL and stream key from YouTube’s live setup in your encoder, then confirm the incoming feed appears in Live Control Room before you go live (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
  5. Leave the source and encoder running for the intended duration. If you end the stream in YouTube and stop sending content from the encoder, the broadcast ends. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive behavior is separate from looping the source.

These are general steps, not a verified click-by-click procedure for a particular encoder release. Consult the current documentation for your software if you need its exact menu labels.

Do not confuse viewer loop, DVR, or HLS with source looping

  • YouTube’s Loop control: YouTube’s help for looping a video or playlist describes viewer playback on YouTube, not how a creator’s encoder sends content (Loop videos or playlists on YouTube).
  • DVR: DVR lets viewers pause or rewind a live stream; it does not restart the creator’s podcast source. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours (Manage live stream settings).
  • HLS rolling playlist: HLS documentation uses “playlist” for transport segments sent as part of a live feed. Its requirement of no more than five outstanding segments concerns delivery, not replaying your podcast episodes. YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output (Set up an HLS stream).

Check these behaviors before a long broadcast

Use a private or unlisted preview to test the exact workflow you intend to leave running. Check that the final episode transitions back to the first item (or to the intended next source), audio and video resume together, and the encoder continues sending a feed. Verify these behaviors in your software’s current documentation or with a controlled preview; settings and results can vary by encoder.

Troubleshoot a stream that still stops

  • The playlist reaches the last item and goes quiet: Confirm repeat is enabled on the media or playlist source itself. A YouTube watch-page Loop setting only affects viewer playback.
  • The first item restarts, but a scene or other source does not: Your workflow may use separate scenes or sources rather than a looping playlist. Check how the software handles the final item and configure the sequence accordingly.
  • Video restarts but audio does not, or the reverse: Test the source transition in preview and check that the audio and video are part of the repeating source or sequence you intend to use.
  • The feed is absent from Live Control Room: Check that the encoder is sending content and that it is configured with the YouTube server URL and stream key for the intended stream.
  • Viewers cannot rewind far enough: That is a DVR limitation, not a source-loop setting. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.
