Short answer: MediaPackage cannot put a stream on YouTube, and AWS’s public MediaLive documentation does not describe a native setting that makes MediaLive repeat a finite video file indefinitely. What the AWS stack does well is take a continuous feed, encode it, send it to YouTube over RTMPS, and optionally package a copy for your own HLS or DASH players. The loop has to come from the source you feed into MediaLive, and you must test its restart behaviour yourself.

If your only goal is a pre-recorded video that repeats on a YouTube channel, this stack adds several usage-billed services and a source you have to build. The sections below cover the full setup and its limits, and the last section covers a simpler route.

What each service does in this workflow

Most of the confusion in this setup comes from treating the three services as one pipeline. They have separate jobs, and only two of them touch YouTube at all.

Component Role in this workflow What it does not do
AWS Elemental MediaLive Ingests an upstream source, transcodes it, and creates output groups for downstream systems. How MediaLive works Its documentation does not describe a native action that repeats a finite file forever.
AWS Elemental MediaPackage (v2, CMAF Ingest) Packages MediaLive output for playback by HLS or DASH players. Delivering to MediaPackage It is not a loop source. AWS states the output is always a live stream, not VOD. The documentation does not show it relaying to YouTube.
YouTube Live Receives an encoder feed at a stream URL with a stream key. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder It does not pull from MediaPackage. The feed has to be pushed to it.

Decide which parts you actually need

  • Loop on YouTube only: build a continuous source, send it to MediaLive, and add an RTMP output group that targets YouTube (Steps 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6). MediaPackage is not needed.
  • Loop on YouTube and also serve your own player: add the MediaPackage output group from Step 3 alongside the YouTube output.
  • Loop one video from one machine with no AWS account: a local encoder that sends RTMPS to YouTube is far less complex. The cloud option at the end of this article is the hosted version of that idea.

Step 1: Build a continuous source that repeats the video

MediaLive expects a continuous upstream feed. AWS’s examples are a streaming camera or an encoder at an event. MediaLive’s schedule supports actions such as switching inputs and inserting image overlays, but its documentation does not say that a finite video file can be set to loop forever as a native action. The repeat therefore has to be designed upstream, in a system you choose and control.

Validate the following before you put the source in front of MediaLive:

  • Restart gap: measure how many seconds the feed is black or silent at each loop point. A gap is visible to viewers every time the clip repeats.
  • Timestamp continuity: audio and video must stay in sync across restarts. Drift that starts after the first loop usually comes from here.
  • Constant format: keep resolution, frame rate and codec the same on every pass. A changed input format can disrupt the encode.
  • Failure behaviour: decide what happens if the source process stops. The MediaLive pages covered here do not describe automatic restart of a failed source.

Do not use a MediaPackage endpoint as the loop source. Its output is live, so it cannot replay an asset for you.

Step 2: Create the MediaLive input and channel

  1. In the AWS Management Console, open MediaLive and create an input that receives your upstream feed. Choose the input type that matches the protocol your source sends.
  2. Create a channel that uses that input. Choose a single-pipeline or standard two-pipeline channel. Two pipelines add resiliency, but they need a matching upstream and downstream arrangement, as described in the MediaLive workflow guide.
  3. Add the output groups you need: the YouTube RTMP output (Step 4) and, if you want your own playback, the MediaPackage output group (Step 3).
  4. Start the channel only after the YouTube destination and the test plan from Step 6 are ready. A running channel is billed for as long as it runs.

Step 3: Add the MediaPackage output group (optional)

This step is only for playback in your own HLS or DASH players. It does not feed YouTube.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In the channel’s output groups, add a MediaPackage output group. AWS recommends the MediaPackage v2 path with CMAF Ingest for new workflows.
  2. Select the region, then the MediaPackage channel group, then the MediaPackage channel, then the ingest endpoint. The managed output group handles the connection to MediaPackage, so do not copy credentials from a generic HLS example.
  3. For a standard two-pipeline channel, the output group maps pipeline 0 to the first ingest endpoint and pipeline 1 to the second. A standard channel needs only one MediaPackage channel.
  4. Start the channel and confirm that your test player loads the endpoint’s playlist before you rely on it.

Three version notes matter here. The v1 path uses HLS ingest and a channel ID, and it is an older documented option. MediaPackage v2 also accepts generic HLS or CMAF output group variants for compatibility, but AWS says those paths lack the managed integration and may need migration for features that depend on it. AWS also states of this output: “The output is always a live stream, not a VOD stream.” (MediaLive result of this procedure)

Step 4: Send the feed to YouTube

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, then create a stream or select an existing one. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the stream URL and stream key.
  2. Copy the stream URL and the stream key. Use the RTMPS address when the destination supports it, because YouTube recommends RTMPS for supported RTMP workflows.
  3. In MediaLive, add an RTMP output group. AWS lists RTMP and RTMPS among the output protocols for sending to an RTMP server. Enter YouTube’s server URL as the destination and the stream key in the key or stream-name field. Console labels can differ between versions, so match each field to the value it expects.
  4. Confirm this arrangement on a test channel before you go live. AWS’s MediaLive documentation does not walk through a YouTube destination, so the URL and key handling need to be verified in your own account.

YouTube’s Live Control Room settings describe the key this way: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” (Manage live stream settings) Do not paste keys into screenshots, support tickets, logs or shared configuration files. If a key is exposed, stop using it and check the stream settings page linked above for how to replace it.

Step 5: Set the encoder values for YouTube

YouTube’s encoder settings for RTMP and RTMPS list H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for video, AAC or MP3 for audio, CBR bitrate encoding, and frame rates up to 60 fps. MediaLive’s RTMP and RTMPS output table lists H.264 video and AAC audio. The codecs both sides support are H.264 and AAC, so use those unless you have checked a different combination on a test channel.

Step 6: Test before you go live

  1. Run a test with audio and motion similar to the final loop. A still test card hides the problems that matter.
  2. Check the preview in the Live Control Room.
  3. Watch the stream-health messages and fix any warnings before you start the public stream.
  4. Monitor sound and picture through at least one loop boundary, not only at the start. Most failures appear at the restart point.
  5. Open the watch page as a viewer, not as the channel owner, and confirm the video plays.
  6. After the test, check the archive. YouTube’s encoder setup guide states that streams under 12 hours are archived automatically. Do not assume a loop that runs longer keeps a single archive; check it after your first long test.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause Fix
YouTube does not receive the feed Wrong URL or key, a key pasted with extra spaces, or a protocol that does not match the destination string Copy the URL and key again from the Live Control Room. Confirm the RTMP or RTMPS choice matches the URL you entered.
Stream health warns about bitrate The configured bitrate is higher than your upload path can sustain, or higher than the table row you chose Lower the video bitrate to the matching row. Check the outbound capacity where the encode runs.
Freeze or black frames at each loop point A restart gap in the upstream source Fix the source restart so frames are continuous. Re-test across at least one boundary.
Audio drifts out of sync after a loop Timestamps reset or change at the restart Make the source timestamps continuous across passes, and keep the audio format constant.
Keyframe warnings Keyframe interval unset or above four seconds Set the keyframe interval to two seconds.
MediaPackage playback is empty The channel is not started, or the player points at the wrong endpoint Start the channel, check the endpoint URL, and confirm the output is live. Remember that this endpoint does not feed YouTube.
The stream stops with no clear error The source process or the channel stopped The MediaLive pages covered here do not describe automatic restart of a failed source. Add your own monitoring and a restart procedure.

Cost and operating notes

  • AWS bills running MediaLive channels by time and MediaPackage by usage. The rates are not listed in this article, so check the AWS pricing pages for your region before you start a 24/7 loop.
  • Resiliency options such as a second pipeline change what you pay. Compare them on the pricing pages before you choose a channel layout.
  • The upstream source is a cost too. If it runs on a server or instance you manage, it needs monitoring and maintenance for as long as the loop runs.

Rights and YouTube rules for looped streams

A loop repeats the same footage for hours, so it is more likely than a single broadcast to draw complaints or copyright claims. Use only footage you own or are licensed to stream. YouTube’s live streaming tips page covers the rules that apply to live content, and the current wording of its policies is there, not in this article. The copyright safety checklist from StreamNeo is a free tool if you want a written pre-stream check.

Or let it run in the cloud

If a looped video is all you need, the AWS stack above has more moving parts than the job requires. StreamNeo, made by Yorker Media, keeps a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos. It streams to YouTube only, and it plays uploaded video; it does not go live from a camera.

  1. Upload your recording, or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live. StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.
  • Nothing has to stay on at home. No computer, OBS or home connection needs to run.
  • Any quality up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. Your upload streams as you made it, with no re-encode and no quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card. That is one free day per account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can YouTube take an HLS feed instead of RTMPS?

YouTube also has an HLS ingest path that is separate from RTMP and RTMPS. This guide uses RTMPS because YouTube recommends it for supported RTMP workflows. HLS ingest has its own setup and settings, so read YouTube’s HLS setup page before you switch, including its latency guidance.
