You can turn an eligible song or audio file into an iPhone ringtone with GarageBand, but “any song” has two important limits: protected Apple Music tracks can’t be used, and exported ringtones can be no longer than 30 seconds. A Music-library song also needs to be downloaded to your iPhone. [Apple’s GarageBand ringtone guide]
What you can use as a ringtone
GarageBand for iPhone can create a ringtone from an audio file, a song in your Music library, or a song you made in GarageBand. For a Music-library track, make sure it is downloaded locally and unprotected. If a song appears dimmed in GarageBand, Apple says it may be protected or not downloaded; protected tracks are unavailable for this process. [Apple Support]

Choose a good 30-second passage
Pick a recognizable section, then trim its beginning and end to remove unwanted lead-in or trailing sound. Keep the region aligned to the start of the track so the exported ringtone does not begin with blank space. You can fine-tune the selection by zooming in while dragging a region edge.

The song is dimmed or unavailable
In GarageBand’s Music browser, a dimmed entry may be protected or not downloaded. Download the song to the iPhone if it is merely unavailable offline. If it is protected, choose an unprotected audio file accessible through Files or another eligible song; GarageBand cannot turn that protected track into a ringtone. [Apple Support]
The exported ringtone starts with silence
Return to Tracks view and drag the audio region to the far left of the track. If the silence is part of the audio itself, trim the region’s left edge as well.

GarageBand says the ringtone is too long
Choose Continue to let GarageBand shorten it at export, or choose Cancel and use the region edges in Tracks view to select a passage of 30 seconds or less. [Apple’s ringtone export guidance]
