To run a science livestream with background music that never stops, set up OBS Studio with your presenter or demonstration in one scene, add a VLC Video Source holding your playlist with Loop Playlist turned on, mix the music below your voice, confirm the music is licensed for live use, and send the output to YouTube with your stream key. The music keeps looping for as long as OBS, your computer and your upload connection stay on. The steps below cover that setup in order, the rights checks that come before it, and the problems that most often break it.
What you need before you start
- A computer that can run OBS Studio and encode video at the same time while the broadcast is live. A computer that is also handling other heavy work will drop frames.
- An upload connection that comfortably exceeds the bitrate you plan to use. Test it with a speed test on the same network you will stream from.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. If it is not enabled yet, start that first: YouTube’s activation for a new channel can take up to 24 hours.
- A microphone for the presenter. A USB microphone or capture device can help, but neither is mandatory; compare what you already own with what needs to be heard and shown.
- Music files or a playlist that you have the right to use in a live broadcast (see the next section).
Check the music rights before you touch OBS
A consumer music subscription, a purchased track, a public playlist or a “royalty-free” label does not by itself give you permission to livestream music or to keep the archived video. The question to answer for each track is whether the license covers this specific use: live broadcast, archived video on demand (VOD), monetization, your territory, and any attribution the license requires.
YouTube checks live streams automatically. Its Help page “Copyright issues with live streams” says:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAll live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.

According to that page, a detected match may replace the stream with a placeholder. If the content remains, the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. Even licensed third-party content can be interrupted if the rights owner has not added your channel to its allowlist through Content ID; in that case, YouTube directs you to ask the owner to add your channel. Use the table below to check the most common music sources.
| Music source | What YouTube’s published help establishes | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer streaming subscription | Nothing in YouTube’s help gives livestream permission for music streamed through a consumer app. | Whether the service’s terms allow this use. Do not assume it does; do not rely on it for a broadcast. |
| Purchased track | A purchase does not by itself make a live broadcast or archive permitted. | The license attached to the purchase, including live and archive use. |
| YouTube Audio Library track | Audio Library music is royalty-free for use in YouTube videos. | That the track’s own terms cover live use and the archived video. YouTube’s help does not establish identical livestream and VOD permissions for every track. |
| Creator Music track | Usage details vary by track, and some can prohibit live streams. | The usage details shown for that exact track before you add it to a playlist. |
| Music you composed and recorded yourself | Not covered by the platform rules above in a way that settles the question. | Any sample, loop or stock sound inside the piece that someone else owns. |
Before you build the playlist, run through the free copyright safety checklist from StreamNeo, then keep a written note of the license terms for every track you use.

YouTube - RTMPS, Server toPrimary YouTube ingestion server, and paste your stream key into Stream Key. Get the key from YouTube Studio (see the note below). - Settings > Video. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution and Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080 for a standard full-HD broadcast. Set Common FPS Values to 30 or 60.
- Settings > Output. Set Output Mode to Advanced so you can set the bitrate and keyframe interval directly. Choose an encoder your computer supports (a hardware encoder if you have one, otherwise x264). Set Rate Control to CBR, then set Bitrate and Keyframe Interval using the table below.
- Settings > Audio. Set Sample Rate to 48 kHz and confirm the desktop and microphone devices are the ones you intend to use.
- Click OK, then open the Audio Mixer and confirm the meters move when you speak.
Get the stream key from YouTube Studio: select Create > Go live and open the stream settings to see your Stream URL and Stream key. Treat the key like a password. If it has been shared or exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the key in OBS before your next broadcast.
Starting values for a 1080p stream
| Setting | 1080p at 30 fps | 1080p at 60 fps |
|---|---|---|
| Video bitrate (CBR) | 4,500 to 6,000 Kbps | 6,000 to 9,000 Kbps |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | 2 seconds |
| Audio codec and bitrate | AAC, 128 Kbps | AAC, 128 Kbps |
| Canvas and output resolution | 1920×1080 | 1920×1080 |
These are commonly used starting ranges, not figures guaranteed by YouTube. Check YouTube’s current live encoder guidance in its Help center before you go live, because recommended ranges change over time. Pick the lower end of a range if your upload speed is modest.
Step 2: Build the scene with the presenter and the playlist
OBS’s Sources Guide lists webcam and video capture sources, audio sources, and a VLC Video source that can carry a playlist. Build the scene in this order.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- In the Scenes panel, click +, name the scene (for example,
Science Live), and select it. - In the Sources panel, click + > Video Capture Device for a webcam, or the same option for a capture card that receives a demonstration camera or document camera.
- Click + > Audio Input Capture and select your microphone.
- Click + > VLC Video Source, name it
Music Playlist, and add your local music files to its playlist in the order you want. OBS documents audio support for common formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. - Open the VLC source’s properties and confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. OBS’s Media Sources guide documents this option, which restarts the list when it runs out of items, and lists the default as On. If your version differs, the checkbox is the setting to trust. OBS Media Sources guide
- Confirm the playlist source is active in every scene you broadcast from. If you switch scenes during the lesson, repeat the test in Step 4 for each scene.
The VLC source relies on VLC media player being installed on the same computer. If it does not appear to play anything, check the VLC installation first.

Step 3: Balance speech and music in the Audio Mixer
Each audio source gets its own fader and meter in the Audio Mixer, so you can set the presenter and the music independently. OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide places background music in the green meter zone and recommends recording a session and listening back before going live. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
- Speak at your normal presenting volume and set the microphone fader so its peaks sit clearly above the music.
- Start the playlist and set the
Music Playlistfader so the music stays in the green zone while you talk. Lower it further if a passage makes the speech hard to follow. - Open the mixer’s menu for
Music Playlist, choose Advanced Audio Properties, and check its Audio Monitoring setting. A source set to Monitor Only is heard in your headphones but not sent to the stream. - Meters only show level. They do not show whether the speech is intelligible over the music, so the listen-back in Step 4 is what settles the balance.
A USB microphone placed close to the presenter usually gives a cleaner voice level than a laptop microphone, but the balance check is the same either way.
Step 4: Test the recording, then go live
- Click Settings > Output > Recording or use the Start Recording button for a test of 5 to 10 minutes using the same scene and audio settings as the broadcast.
- Listen to the recording on headphones. Check three things: the speech is intelligible over the music, the playlist joins between tracks without a gap or click, and the audio does not clip (distort) at its loudest points.
- If the mix is wrong, adjust the faders and repeat the test. Do not skip the test because the meters looked correct.
- Click Start Streaming in the Controls panel.
- Open the stream in YouTube Studio’s live control room and watch the first few minutes as a viewer would. Confirm the video, the presenter’s voice and the music are all present.
- Keep an eye on the OBS status bar. Dropped frames mean the computer or upload connection cannot keep up with the bitrate you chose.
Keeping the loop running for a full broadcast
- Set your computer so it does not sleep, lock the screen automatically, or shut down during the broadcast. The stream stops when the computer does.
- Disable OBS and operating system update prompts for the duration of the broadcast so a restart does not interrupt the stream.
- Make the playlist long enough to avoid obvious repetition, and check that the join between the last and first tracks is acceptable. Loop Playlist restarts the list, so the join is the only seam listeners will hear every cycle.
- Plan for a restart. If OBS or the computer restarts, the stream ends and must be started again from OBS.
Troubleshooting
The playlist plays once, then goes silent
Cause: Loop Playlist is off in the VLC source’s properties. Fix: Open the VLC source’s properties, enable Loop Playlist, and run a test loop past the end of the list.
The music plays in OBS but not on YouTube
Cause: The music source is muted in the Audio Mixer, or its Audio Monitoring is set to Monitor Only. Fix: Unmute the source and set Audio Monitoring in Advanced Audio Properties so the source is sent to the stream. Confirm by checking the recording or the first minutes of the YouTube stream.

The music drowns out the presenter
Cause: The music fader sits too high relative to the microphone. Fix: Lower the Music Playlist fader and repeat the listen-back. Keep the music in the green zone while speech is active.
YouTube shows a placeholder or interrupts the stream
Cause: YouTube’s scan matched third-party content in the audio or video, as described in the rights section above. Fix: Stop the stream, remove the matching track, and do not restart with the same audio. For a licensed track that is still interrupted, ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID, as YouTube’s help page directs. Do not restart the broadcast until the track is removed or cleared.
The stream drops or stutters
Cause: The bitrate is higher than your upload connection can sustain, or the computer is overloaded and dropping frames. Fix: Lower the bitrate in Settings > Output, close other applications that use the network or the processor, and move to a lower frame rate if needed.
YouTube will not let you go live
Cause: Live streaming is not yet enabled on the channel, or the activation period has not finished. Fix: Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio and wait for the activation to complete before the broadcast date. Check the stream key again if OBS reports a connection error.

What this costs to run
OBS Studio itself costs nothing. The real costs are the computer that must stay on for the whole broadcast, electricity, and the upload bandwidth that the bitrate uses. To compare that cost against a cloud option, StreamNeo publishes a free cloud vs PC cost calculator, which you can use with your own hardware and hours.
Or let it run in the cloud
The setup above needs your computer, OBS and your upload connection to stay on for the entire broadcast. StreamNeo runs a pre-recorded video or playlist from its cloud, so you do not need to keep a computer on at home. It has limits you should know: it plays uploaded videos rather than a camera, and it streams to YouTube only. If your presenter speaks live, keep OBS for that part of the lesson and use StreamNeo for a looping background broadcast.
- Upload your recording or build a playlist from your uploaded videos. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across your active slots. The upload-time calculator estimates how long a file will take to send.
- Add your stream key once. It is the same YouTube stream key described in Step 1.
- Go live. StreamNeo loops the content from the cloud to your YouTube channel.
- Nothing has to stay on at home. Your computer can be off and the stream keeps running.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams exactly as you uploaded it, at one price per slot.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required (one free day per account).
- Monthly: $9.99 per month. Other lengths are listed on the pricing page.
Start with the free first day at https://app.streamneo.com/register, and then decide whether a paid slot is worth it for your broadcast schedule.
