Build your budget from take-home income and the money you actually spent—not from an idealized estimate. Review several months of bank, card, and cash transactions, adjust categories that have risen based on your own bills and purchases, and set money aside for costs that arrive only once or a few times a year. U.S. inflation figures can provide context, but they are not a personal price adjustment for every household.

1. Work out the income available this month

Start with take-home income: the pay and other reliable money you expect to receive after taxes and payroll deductions. If your income varies, use a cautious estimate rather than assuming your best month will repeat, then update the plan as money arrives. This is a practical way to avoid committing the same dollars twice; it is not a formula prescribed by a government agency.

Keep the budget period consistent. For a monthly plan, list income expected during that month and expenses due or planned during it. If paydays do not line up with bill due dates, note the dates as well as the monthly totals so you can spot a timing shortfall.

2. Reconstruct what you really spend

Review several months of checking and credit-card statements, then add cash spending, receipts, and purchases paid from other accounts. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recommends making an “as-is” budget that reflects current spending and checking bank statements to test whether the plan is realistic. A budget based on actual records is more useful than one based on what you hope to spend.

3. Sort expenses into categories you can act on

Use categories that make it easy to see what is fixed, what changes, and what you can adjust. These are organizational examples, not a required category system:

  • Recurring commitments: housing, utilities, insurance, transportation payments, debt payments, and subscriptions.
  • Variable essentials: groceries, fuel, medical costs, and household supplies.
  • Savings: regular contributions toward emergency savings or other goals. Treat planned savings as part of the budget rather than money left over by accident.
  • Flexible spending: dining out, entertainment, and other wants.
  • Irregular expenses: costs that are predictable but do not arrive every month.
  • Miscellaneous: a line for genuine outliers or expenses that do not fit neatly elsewhere.

National spending averages can show why some categories deserve close attention, but they are not targets. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported average annual household expenditures of $78,535 in 2024, or $6,545 per month. Housing averaged $26,266 a year and transportation $13,318; together they made up over half of the average household’s spending. Your household’s income, location, household size, and choices may differ substantially.

4. Adjust for price increases using your own records

Compare recent bills and purchase totals with earlier months, category by category. If your grocery receipts, utility bills, rent, fuel, or medical costs have risen, update the relevant budget amounts to reflect what your household is now paying. Check both the total and any changes in how often you buy something or use a service.

Inflation is not identical across categories or households. The BLS describes the Consumer Price Index as a measure of price changes paid by consumers for goods and services. In the U.S. CPI-U, prices overall were up 3.4% over the 12 months ending August 2026. Over that same period, food prices rose 2.7% and shelter prices rose 3.0%; gasoline rose 3.9% in August 2026. These are national figures, not a forecast of your next bills or a recommended increase to every line in your budget. August 2026 is the latest release verified here; the September release was scheduled for October 14, 2026. BLS, Consumer Price Index, August 2026.

5. Make room for costs that are not monthly

A budget can look balanced until an annual premium, school expense, or seasonal bill arrives. Scan several months of records and, where useful, a full year to find expenses that recur less often than monthly. CFPB examples include insurance, medical expenses, tuition, school clothes, support for relatives, seasonal recreation, gifts, charitable giving, and vacations.

For an expense with a reasonably predictable annual total, one practical approach is to divide the estimate by 12 and reserve that amount each month. For example, if you expect a yearly cost of $600, setting aside $50 a month builds toward it. Adjust the estimate when the expected bill changes, and keep the reserve somewhere you can distinguish from ordinary spending.

6. Balance the plan and check it against reality

Add planned expenses and savings, then compare the total with take-home income. If the plan says money should remain, check whether that matches the actual balance in the accounts used for spending. When it does not, look first for missing transactions, bills paid from another account, irregular costs, or categories estimated too low. A gap is useful information; it does not automatically mean discretionary spending is the only problem.

Revise the budget when income, employment, spending habits, or costs change. A brief check during the month can catch a category running ahead of plan while there is still time to make a decision. The CFPB offers guidance on assessing spending and comparing a budget with account history at its budgeting guidance; its spending tracker is another no-cost way to record purchases.
