You can make a mansion in Minecraft in two ways: design and build one yourself on a plot you choose, or take over a woodland mansion the game has already generated and remodel it. The steps differ, so decide which route you are taking before you place your first block.
Choose between a custom build and a generated woodland mansion
The word “mansion” can mean two different things in Minecraft. A custom mansion is a structure you plan and build from empty ground. A woodland mansion is a large naturally generated building that already exists in your world. The table below shows how the two routes differ.
| Factor | Custom build from scratch | Renovating a generated woodland mansion |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Any plot you choose | Dark forest biomes, according to Minecraft Help. Minecraft’s official article also discusses mansions in pale gardens. |
| Starting point | Empty ground you clear and plan | An existing structure with hostile occupants that should be cleared first in survival |
| Footprint and layout | Set entirely by your plan | Set by generation, but rooms can be resized by removing interior walls or adding extensions |
| Materials | Gathered and chosen by you; quantities depend on your design | The existing structure’s blocks are kept or replaced; new extensions need new materials, and the amount depends on how far you extend |
| Hostile mob exposure | Depends on your world and mode; not stated for a generic build | Vindicators and evokers inhabit the structure, and other hostile mobs may spawn in its dark interior |
| Speed and cost | Depends on world, mode and design; not stated as faster or cheaper | Depends on world, mode and how much you change; not stated as faster or cheaper |
Build a custom mansion step by step
The sequence below moves from plan to finish. Each stage should read clearly before you move to the next, because details such as windows and trim look wrong on a shape that has not been settled.

Pick a plot that has room for the footprint you intend to build. Check that the setting suits the mode you are playing in, because survival and creative builds have different resource and safety constraints. Once you have chosen the route, keep to it; mixing a custom plan with a generated structure usually leads to awkward joins.

Step 2: Sketch the footprint, floors and entrance
Draw a broad outline of the building on paper or in a blueprint map before you place blocks. Decide how many floors and wings the design needs. Mark the central entrance and main hall first, then divide the remaining space into rooms. Sizing decisions made at this stage are the cheapest to change.
Step 3: Choose a small, cohesive palette
Settle on a short list of materials before building. One wooden-mansion video tutorial uses stripped spruce logs, spruce planks, dark oak logs and stairs, stone bricks, slabs and glass. Treat that as one creator’s design choice for one build, not a standard mansion kit. No block count or palette is established as the correct one for a mansion, so this article does not give quantities; work out your own from your sketch.

- MINECRAFT ACTION FIGURE – Kids construct every detail of the Creeper, from its 4 poseable legs to its detachable head

Step 4: Build the foundation, supports, floors and walls
Lay the foundation and exterior supports first, then raise the floors and walls one level at a time. Check each level against your sketch before stacking the next one. Keeping the main silhouette simple at this stage makes it much easier to correct proportions later.
Step 5: Add windows, roof, balconies and trim
Once the main shape reads clearly, add windows, the roof, balconies and decorative trim. Roof shape has the biggest effect on how the mansion looks from a distance, so decide it before detailing the walls underneath. Trim and balconies are finishing work and are easiest to place after the silhouette is settled.

Step 6: Furnish the rooms and finish the grounds
Fill the rooms with purpose. Bedrooms, storage, farms, a map room or a workshop all give the building a reason to exist. Then add lighting so the interior and exterior stay visible at night, and landscape the grounds to suit the setting you chose in step one.
Renovate a generated woodland mansion
A generated mansion saves the framing work, but it is not a safe empty shell. Minecraft’s official article describes the structure’s varied interiors and notes that it is dangerous, because vindicators and evokers live there and other hostile mobs may spawn in its dark interior. In survival, clear the building before you start remodeling.

Clear the structure before you change it
Deal with the hostile occupants and light the dark interior before you remove any walls. Working in an unlit, mob-filled building puts both the renovation and your inventory at risk. Once the interior is clear, you can plan the changes calmly.

The official article says players can customise a generated mansion. In Duncan Geere’s words, from Minecraft’s official article “Building Blocks: Woodland Mansion” (published June 23, 2025): “You could even start to customise a mansion to your own needs – knocking down the interior walls or building extensions to make the rooms the size and shape you need.” Removing interior walls makes rooms bigger, while extensions add floor area. Test each change in a small area first so that you do not weaken the existing walls you still need.

Keep the rooms that already work
The official article describes bedrooms, farms, storage chambers, conference rooms and map rooms within woodland mansions, and recommends adapting rooms to your needs. Keep the layouts that suit your play and reshape the rest. These room types are useful ideas, not required features of a mansion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Save and reuse a structure in Bedrock Edition
If you want to keep a finished design or place it again elsewhere, Bedrock Edition supports saving and loading structures with structure blocks and the /structure command, as documented by Microsoft Learn. This step is optional and specific to Bedrock Edition. Java Edition uses different commands for saved structures, so check the current documentation for your version before you follow any Bedrock steps.
The Bottom Line
Choose a custom build if you want a design you control from the first block. Choose renovation if a woodland mansion already exists near you and you are prepared to clear it first. In either case, settle the footprint, palette and roof before you place detailed trim, since those decisions are the hardest to change later.
