Start by changing how you support the phone, not by stretching your thumb farther across the screen. Reposition it in your hand, use two hands for longer tasks, or try voice and one-handed features. If you still want extra support, an expandable grip, ring, or finger loop may add a contact point—but fit and comfort depend on your hand, and none is established as a treatment for pain.
Make your current grip easier first
Reaching your thumb across a large screen can make the phone feel less secure. Instead, shift the phone within your palm so the controls you need are closer, and avoid forcing your thumb to its limit. For typing, browsing, or other extended tasks, switch hands or use both hands. Voice input and built-in one-handed features can also reduce how often you need to reach across the display.
If a particular position causes discomfort, change it rather than trying to hold through the strain. Persistent or worsening pain is a reason to stop using the aggravating setup and seek appropriate professional guidance.

Choose an accessory by the kind of support you want
Phone accessories offer different ways to secure a device. They are product-form options, not proven treatments or clinically ranked comfort solutions.

Compare options by how they feel in your own grip, whether you can reach the controls you need, how much bulk they add, and whether they work with your case, charging setup, and stand needs. A grip is a holding aid; the available studies do not establish that any grip type relieves pain.
Test placement before attaching a grip
There is no universal best spot: hand size, the phone, and your natural hold all affect where a grip should go. Use a case if possible so you can remove or swap the accessory without attaching it directly to the phone. Android Central’s positioning guide recommends checking thumb reach and where your fingers rest before settling on a location.

- Hold the phone the way you normally do and note where your fingers naturally land on its back.
- Check whether your thumb can reach the keyboard and the controls you commonly use without stretching.
- Place the grip where it supports your natural hold, then check whether the phone feels reasonably balanced and the position feels comfortable.
- Test the case, buttons, stand use, and charging setup before committing to that placement.
These are practical checks, not a validated ergonomic protocol. If the grip makes the phone feel awkward, interferes with the controls, or causes discomfort, try a different position or design.

Attachment methods vary by model. As one specific example, PopSockets describes its Low-Pro Grip as 2.6 mm thin, with an integrated adjustable stand, and says it snaps onto MagSafe- or Qi2-compatible cases. The manufacturer recommends removing it for best wireless-charging performance. Those specifications apply to that named model; they are not an independent assessment or a guarantee for other magnetic grips.

When a strap is a better fit
If you mainly want help carrying the phone or reducing the chance of dropping it, a wristlet or crossbody strap is a separate option from a grip. PopSockets’ Paracord Safety Orange phone strap listing describes an adapter that slips between the phone and case and offers wristlet and crossbody formats. The listing says it fits most cases and specifies compatibility with certain PopSockets iPhone and Samsung cases; check the exact case fit. Availability and regional pricing can change.

A 2019 conference paper explored how an expandable phone grip affected text entry using a OnePlus One running Android 5.1.1. Its results concern that device, accessory, and study setup, not today’s heavy phones or current grip products (paper). The separate 2018 ring study addressed text-entry performance, not whether a ring makes a phone more comfortable to hold.

These studies do not provide a clinical comparison of grip types for pain, strain, or long-term comfort. Treat product features as design descriptions, not evidence that an accessory prevents repetitive strain or fixes wrist pain.
