A joystick and buttons can give an Arduino Uno physical game controls, but they do not automatically make the board show up on a computer as a USB gamepad. First identify your exact Uno variant: USB controller support depends on the board, and the sources available here do not establish a reliable, current procedure for making a classic Uno enumerate as a gamepad.

First, identify which Arduino Uno you have

“Arduino Uno” can refer to different board variants. The distinction matters because reading joystick inputs is separate from sending controller inputs to a computer over USB.

  • Classic Uno: The ArduinoJoystickLibrary README explicitly says the library does not work with the Uno. Arduino’s native USB Keyboard documentation does not list the classic Uno among supported boards. Together, those sources do not support a plug-and-play classic Uno gamepad method.
  • UNO R4 WiFi: Arduino’s Keyboard documentation lists this model for native USB keyboard behavior. Arduino’s Modulino Joystick page also lists it as compatible with that particular joystick module. These facts do not, by themselves, establish a specific gamepad implementation.
  • UNO R4 Minima: Arduino lists it in the Keyboard documentation’s supported-board information, but the cited Modulino Joystick page does not list it among that module’s compatible boards.

Check the exact model name printed on your board before choosing a library or following USB HID instructions. Do not assume that a tutorial for a Leonardo or another Uno variant applies to a classic Uno.

Why a joystick does not automatically become a USB gamepad

A joystick module produces physical input signals: two analog axis readings and, on many modules, a switch signal when you press the stick. The computer-facing part is different. To appear as a gamepad, the board and its software must send an appropriate USB Human Interface Device (HID) report.

Arduino’s Keyboard reference says, “The keyboard functions enable 32u4 or SAMD micro based boards to send keystrokes to an attached computer through their micro’s native USB port.” That describes keyboard input on supported hardware; it is not evidence that a classic Uno can act as a gamepad. Arduino’s Mouse reference likewise describes native USB mouse behavior for supported hardware, not a classic Uno gamepad procedure.

The ArduinoJoystickLibrary README names supported boards and explicitly excludes non-32U4-based devices such as Arduino Uno and Mega. Do not select that library for a classic Uno expecting it to provide USB gamepad support.

Choose the physical controls

For the input side of a project, a two-axis analog joystick module with an integrated pushbutton is a practical starting point. The Arduino Modulino Joystick is described as a dual-axis analog joystick with an integrated pushbutton, but its compatibility statement is specific to UNO R4 WiFi or Qwiic-enabled boards; it should not be generalized to every Uno.

A Leonardo-based controller example lists an HW-504 analog joystick module and jumper wires. That example can help identify relevant component types, but it is not a verified classic Uno USB-gamepad build.

  • Jumper wires for prototyping.
  • Optional additional pushbuttons or switches if your design needs more controls.

Buying a joystick addresses the physical-input side only. It does not resolve whether your board can send the gamepad signals your computer or game expects.

What you can—and cannot—build from this information

You can use a joystick and switches as inputs to an Arduino project, but the available board-specific evidence does not provide a reliable, current sequence of wiring, firmware changes, and software steps that makes a classic Uno appear to a computer as a USB gamepad. In particular, it does not establish pin assignments or a complete classic Uno circuit and sketch. Avoid treating a Leonardo tutorial as proof that the same USB steps work on an Uno.

If your goal is specifically a controller recognized as a gamepad, choose a board and implementation with explicit support for that output, then follow instructions written for that exact board. The cited sources establish some native USB keyboard support for listed boards, but keyboard HID and gamepad HID are different outputs; the former alone does not provide a gamepad recipe.
