To make a Fairphone last longer, reduce avoidable battery wear, use charging equipment that matches your exact model, repair faults with model-specific parts, and keep its software updated while official support remains available. Fairphone models do not share one battery, repair procedure, or software-support end date, so identify your model before buying parts or relying on a support timeline.
Care for the battery without overcomplicating charging
Fairphone recommends keeping the battery between 20% and 80% when practical. Repeatedly leaving it at 100% or letting it fall to 1% can negatively affect long-term battery health. This is a care recommendation, not a guarantee of a specific lifespan. See Fairphone’s battery-life guidance.
- Keep the phone away from direct sun and other heat sources; do not put it in a refrigerator or freezer to cool it.
- In freezing temperatures, keep the phone in a pocket rather than exposing it unnecessarily.
- For long-term storage, Fairphone recommends room temperature and at least 50% battery charge.
Recognize when a battery may need replacement
A battery more than two years old, one that suddenly charges poorly, or one that appears expanded may be nearing the end of its useful life. These are warning signs, not a diagnosis. If charging performance has changed, contact Fairphone Support for diagnosis before purchasing a replacement battery.

Power it down and remove the battery only if that can be done safely. Do not ship a swelling battery; ask your municipality about local chemical-battery recycling and contact support for guidance. Fairphone describes a spin test as one clue to swelling, but avoid handling or testing a battery that looks visibly deformed.

Choose charging equipment for your exact model
Do not choose a charger on wattage alone. Fairphone publishes model-specific cable and charger requirements, and older models have different guidance from newer ones. Check the model row in its charging guide before buying or troubleshooting accessories.
For newer models, Fairphone recommends a high-quality USB-C-to-USB-C cable rated for at least 60 W (20 V, 3 A), together with either a USB Power Delivery charger with PPS rated at least 30 W (9 V, 3 A) or Quick Charge 4.0 or later. These recommendations are not a substitute for checking the requirements for an older Fairphone.

If charging seems slow
- Check the model and accessories. Confirm that both the cable and charger meet the guidance for that Fairphone.
- Allow for slower charging above 80%. Fairphone says charging normally slows beyond this point to help extend battery life.
- Try a wall outlet. Fairphone suggests using one rather than a laptop when diagnosing slow charging.
- Check the USB port for debris. Fairphone suggests clearing dust or lint with compressed air; do not scrape the port with a metal object.
- Check the setting if you own a Fairphone 5. Make sure Fast Charge is selected if you expect faster charging.
- Ask support before replacing the battery. A charging fault may need diagnosis rather than a new battery.
Repair the fault with parts made for your model
Start by identifying the fault and checking warranty coverage, then use the repair guide and parts for the exact Fairphone model. Fairphone’s repairs page offers repair guides, spare parts, and service-center options. It says DIY repairs performed according to its instructions should not damage the phone or void the warranty; the warranty terms are binding, so verify coverage with Fairphone Support before opening a device if the repair may qualify.

Fairphone’s guide documents user replacement of the battery, display, top unit, cameras/earpiece, loudspeaker, and USB-C port. Before starting, it calls for a Torx T5 screwdriver, a clean, well-lit workspace, containers for screws, and a plastic card or pick. It also advises updating the software first so the device has the firmware drivers needed to recognize replacement parts. Follow the Gen. 6/Gen. 6+ repair instructions rather than applying them to another generation.

Parts are not interchangeable across phone models: dimensions, voltage ranges, connectors, and firmware differ. After a severe fall or water damage, Fairphone recommends professional assessment instead of assuming a module swap will solve the problem. Other generations have their own guides and parts.
Install updates and check the support window for your model
Software updates can bring security and privacy improvements as well as keep the phone functioning well. Fairphone says it sees software as part of longevity: “When it comes to longer-lasting phones, our repairable design often gets all the glory. But software is just as important in keeping our phones working well for the long term.” Install available updates and check the latest release notes and support roadmap for your model. The timelines below are Fairphone’s stated plans or commitments, checked on 2026-10-04; they do not guarantee that every app or carrier feature will remain compatible. Decide whether to repair or move on
A repair is most straightforward when diagnosis points to one replaceable part and a compatible part or service is available. Before committing, weigh these factors together:

- Model and part availability: Confirm that the replacement part is for the exact generation.
- Security support: Consider how much official update support remains and whether the phone’s security level suits your use.
- Fault and damage: A single failed module may be repairable; severe impact or water damage warrants professional assessment.
- Coverage and service: Check warranty terms and repair-service availability in your region.
- Repair cost: Compare the current cost of a verified compatible part and tools with a service repair; prices vary by region and are not established here.
- Your actual needs: Consider whether the phone still supports the apps, network features, and security requirements you depend on.
For Fairphone 3/3+, the end of official support and spare-parts sales changes the decision: even a successful hardware repair does not restore official security patches.
