A boo basket is a Halloween or autumn gift built around the person receiving it—not a specific kind of basket. Choose a recipient and a simple theme, add a small mix of treats and useful or entertaining gifts, arrange everything so it can be seen, and finish with a personal note. You can give it directly or use the optional “You’ve been booed” tradition.
What to put in a boo basket
Start with a mix that suits the recipient rather than filling the container with unrelated seasonal novelties. A useful starting point is one treat, one cozy or practical item, one activity or entertainment item, and one Halloween or autumn touch. For example, a movie-night basket might pair popcorn and hot chocolate with a blanket and a favorite Halloween film. Argos’s August 2026 guide suggests treats, hot drinks, cozy gifts, games, books, crafts, and seasonal decorations; Lush’s boo-basket ideas include bath or shower treats and self-care extras.
- Movie night: popcorn, snacks, hot chocolate, a cozy blanket, or a favorite Halloween film.

- Crafts: colored paper, markers, glue sticks, stickers, or pumpkin-decorating supplies.
- Children’s activities: coloring books, craft supplies, family games, story books, stickers, or a seasonal soft toy.
- Self-care: bath or shower treats with a cozy extra such as socks or a card.
- Neighbor gift: cookies or other fall treats, a candle, cozy blanket, or mug, with an optional “You’ve been booed” note.

How to make a boo basket
- Choose the recipient and theme. Think about what the person enjoys, then narrow the basket to one idea—such as movie night, autumn comfort, crafts, self-care, or children’s fun. A theme makes it easier to choose items that belong together.
- Pick a container to fit the gifts. A reusable basket, storage tub, gift box, bag, or bucket can work. Decide what you plan to include first, then choose a container sized for those items rather than buying a large one and trying to fill it.
- Build a small, compatible mix. Combine a few items from different categories: a treat, a useful or cozy gift, an activity or entertainment item, and a seasonal touch. Choose things the recipient will actually use or enjoy.
- Raise and arrange the contents. Put tissue paper or shredded paper in the base to lift the gifts and fill gaps. Place the main gift and most appealing items where they remain visible; use smaller pieces to fill open spaces. - Add a personal finish. Attach a handwritten message or seasonal tag. If you are joining a “You’ve been booed” chain, include a note explaining the tradition; otherwise, a simple greeting is enough.
How to decorate a boo basket
Let the chosen gifts and container do most of the work. Use tissue or shredded paper as both filler and a way to raise the contents, then arrange the gifts so their shapes and labels are visible. A seasonal tag or handwritten note provides a finishing detail without hiding what is inside. The container itself does not need to be a traditional woven basket: boxes, bags, tubs, and buckets are all options.
