To lower electricity use during peak-demand periods, first find the peak hours and rules for your specific utility rate or demand-response program. Then move flexible tasks—such as EV charging, laundry, dishwashing, and pool-pump operation—outside those hours, and consider modest, comfort-conscious HVAC adjustments. Peak schedules, incentives, and potential bill effects vary by utility and household; there is no universal savings figure.

How can I tell when my electricity use is most expensive?

Check your current bill and your utility’s rate or program information before changing when you use electricity. “Peak hours” are not universal: time-of-use plans set prices for specified periods, while demand-response programs may call short-term events when grid conditions warrant. Some households instead have flat rates or demand charges, which work differently.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program distinguishes demand response—a generally voluntary, short-term reduction in electricity use, often prompted by grid reliability concerns or high wholesale prices—from time-variable pricing, where electricity prices vary by time or season. A demand-response event’s hours and incentive are not necessarily the same as a time-of-use plan’s peak window.

Use your bill and interval data

Review the rate components on your bill and look for usage data from your utility. If available, hourly or 15-minute interval data can show when your home actually draws power. The DOE’s guidance on evaluating utility rate options recommends comparing bills, available usage data, and alternative rates before switching. A cheaper overnight price alone does not prove a plan will reduce your total bill; compare all charges against your household’s actual usage.

What should I shift or turn off during peak demand?

When timing affects your rate or a program asks for a temporary reduction, start with discretionary loads that can wait without disrupting comfort or essential needs. The goal is to avoid running several flexible, high-use devices at once during the relevant period.

  • EV charging: Schedule charging for off-peak hours or outside a notified event, if the vehicle, charger, and rate or program support it.
  • Laundry and dishwashing: Run washers, dryers, and dishwashers later when practical; use built-in delay-start controls if available.
  • Pool pumps: Shift pump operation to a lower-cost period if your pool-care needs and utility terms allow.
  • Other flexible devices: Avoid unnecessary use of discretionary equipment during an event. Do not disable essential medical or safety equipment.

ENERGY STAR identifies connected appliances, pool pumps, and EV chargers among product categories where connected functionality may be available. That does not mean every model can respond to every utility signal. If you already own a connected device, check its settings and your utility’s compatibility and enrollment requirements. A new appliance purchase solely for peak shifting is not established as cost-effective by the cited guidance.

Can a smart thermostat help during peak hours?

Heating and cooling are the largest household energy-use category, according to ENERGY STAR’s smart thermostat guidance. Scheduling a modest temperature adjustment or enrolling in a utility thermostat program may help reduce or shift HVAC demand during peak periods. Some programs use pre-cooling—cooling the home before an event—so the system can run less during the event.

Before enrolling or changing a schedule, consider occupants’ comfort, the system’s operating limits, and how it will recover afterward. A DOE/NREL presentation dated April 25, 2024, reported that variable-speed heat pumps in its described test context reduced power by 30% during general-curtailment events and 60% during critical-curtailment events. Those are equipment- and event-specific findings, not a household savings estimate. The presentation also noted that some units used auxiliary electric resistance heat after events to return to their initial set point, which can affect recovery energy use.

Check compatibility and control terms

A smart thermostat must be compatible with your home’s HVAC equipment, and utility control is available only where the product and program support it. ENERGY STAR says connected products may communicate with utilities with customer permission, may allow utility control of some functions, and should leave the consumer ultimate control, including the ability to override utility requests. Verify what set-point changes the program can make, how it notifies you, and how to opt out or override before enrolling. Certified smart thermostats undergo an independent certification process that verifies savings based on field data, but that certification does not establish a particular household’s peak-period savings.

Does my utility pay me to reduce electricity use?

Some demand-response programs offer an incentive, such as a discount or bill credit, for participating, but availability and terms depend on the utility and location. Check whether enrollment is open to your rate class, whether events are optional, how notice is given, and what rewards or penalties apply. Do not assume an event has a fixed schedule or that every program pays the same way.

Keep demand response separate from a time-variable rate when comparing offers. Demand response typically asks for a short-term reduction during an event; time-variable pricing changes the price across defined time periods or in response to market conditions. A household can face one, both, or neither, depending on its utility arrangements.

How should I decide whether to change my rate or enroll?

  1. Identify what you have now. On your bill, determine whether you pay time-of-use energy prices, a demand charge, a flat rate, or participate in an event-based program.
  2. Confirm the current local rules. Check your utility’s current rate schedule and program page for peak hours, seasons, event notice, eligibility, incentives, and opt-out or override terms.
  3. Inspect your usage pattern. Use interval data when available to see whether substantial flexible loads occur during expensive periods.
  4. Compare the full bill impact. Evaluate all charges and program conditions using your own usage rather than assuming off-peak pricing will make the total bill lower.
  5. Test a practical schedule. Move only loads you can safely and conveniently shift, then review subsequent bills and usage data to see whether the change suits your home.
