You can lock an eligible note from the Notes app on your Mac. First choose whether Notes should use your Mac login password or a separate custom Notes password; then select the note and choose More > Lock Note. Touch ID is optional. Before choosing a custom password, know that forgetting it can leave notes already locked with it inaccessible.
Choose a password method
In Notes, the password method applies to an account’s locked notes. Open Notes > Settings, then look under Locked notes. If you use more than one account, select the account whose notes you want to lock. Apple documents these controls in its Notes settings guide.

| Mac login password | Uses your Mac account credential instead of a separate Notes password. For iCloud notes, Apple requires two-factor authentication and iCloud Keychain to be enabled in System Settings. Other devices must use iOS 16 or later or macOS 13 or later to view notes locked with this method. |
| Custom Notes password | Creates a separate password for locked notes. Apple recommends adding a hint. If you forget the password and Touch ID cannot unlock the notes, Apple cannot restore access to notes already locked with it. Resetting the password applies to notes you lock in the future; older notes still require the original password. |
Choose the Mac login password or Use Custom Password in the Locked notes settings. If creating a custom password, enter and verify it and set a hint. Apple also allows a password to be created when you lock a note for the first time. Keep a custom password somewhere safe before relying on it. If your Mac or Magic Keyboard has Touch ID, you can enable Use Touch ID to unlock notes with a fingerprint. It is optional; you can still authenticate with the selected password. A Touch ID keyboard is not required.

Lock a note
- Open Notes and select the note you want to protect.
- Click the More button beside the search field, then choose Lock Note.
- Authenticate if prompted. If you have already entered the password during the current Notes session, Notes may not ask again.
Apple’s Mac instructions for locking notes cover the same menu path. Labels can vary across macOS releases, so check the Notes version on your Mac if a command appears under a different name.
Unlock notes and close them when you’re done
Select a locked note and authenticate to read it. Once you authenticate, all locked notes in that account are open during the current Notes work session—not just the selected note.

To hide locked notes right away, click the Lock button beside the search field. This closes all locked notes that are open. Notes also closes them automatically after inactivity or when you quit the app. Apple’s security guide says the secure Notes session ends when you select Lock Now or when Notes has been in the background for more than eight minutes; using the Lock button is the direct way to close open notes immediately.
Apple describes secure notes as end-to-end encrypted: “Secure notes are end-to-end encrypted using a user-provided passphrase that’s required to view the notes on supported devices and the iCloud website.” Read Apple’s Notes security guide for the security details.

Check whether a note can be locked
Some Notes content and account states make a note ineligible. Apple says you cannot lock:
- Quick Notes
- Notes shared with other people
- Notes containing video, audio, PDF, or document attachments
- Notes containing tags
- Notes in an iCloud account that has not been upgraded
Tables, images, drawings, scanned documents, maps, and web attachments are compatible with locked notes, according to Apple’s Mac locking guide. If Lock Note is missing or unavailable, check the account and content against the eligibility list first.
