To locate a lost phone, use the service tied to its operating system: Google Find Hub for Android (formerly Find My Device) or Apple Find My for iPhone. Sign in with the account associated with the phone, select the missing device, then use the available location and security controls. A map may show a last known location rather than a live position, especially if the phone is offline or out of power.
Before you start: use the right account and service
Google now calls its Android locator Find Hub; the app or device may still show the former name, Find My Device, during the transition. iPhones use Apple’s Find My. These services require the Google Account or Apple Account linked to the missing phone. [Google Android Help; Apple Support]
- For an Android phone, use the Find Hub app on another Android device or Google’s web entry point.
- For an iPhone, use the Find My app on another Apple device or visit iCloud.com/find.
- If the phone may be stolen, prioritize locking it and protecting accounts. Do not confront someone or enter an unsafe location based on a map pin.
Find a lost Android phone with Google Find Hub
- Open the Find Hub app on another Android phone or tablet, or go to Google’s Find Hub web page. Sign in to the Google Account associated with the missing phone. A friend can help using guest access in the app.
- Select the missing phone from the device list and review the location and its status. Depending on the phone’s settings and connection, Find Hub may show a last known location when it cannot reach the device; do not assume the pin is live.
- If recovery seems possible, use the available secure-device controls. Where offered, add a message or callback number to the lock screen so someone who finds the phone can contact you.
- If the phone appears stolen or recovery is unlikely, secure your accounts and consider remote erasure only after weighing its consequences.
When Android locating and remote controls can work
Google says securing or erasing a device requires it to have power, mobile data or Wi-Fi, a signed-in Google Account, Find Hub enabled, and visibility on Google Play. Offline finding depends on device and network settings; Google describes a crowdsourced Find Hub network, but the available guidance does not establish one behavior for every phone model or powered-off state. Check the settings and current support information for the specific device. [Google Android Help; Google Store]

What Android remote erase does
Google says a remotely erased phone will require the Google Account password to use again, and a factory-reset device will no longer be available in Find Hub. Treat erase as a last resort: it protects local data, but removes the phone from the locator’s reach after reset. [Google Android Help]
Find a lost iPhone with Apple Find My
- Open Find My on another Apple device, or visit iCloud.com/find, and sign in to the Apple Account associated with the iPhone.
- Choose the missing device and inspect its location and status. Apple says iCloud.com shows a map location when the device is powered on and connected to a network. If enabled, Send Last Location can upload a location shortly before the battery needs charging; iCloud.com displays locations for up to 24 hours.
- Turn on Lost Mode (mark the device as lost) to protect personal information and, where available, display a callback number and message.
- Consider erase only after trying other options. If the iPhone is offline, a remote erase begins the next time it connects.
How Apple’s offline network differs
Apple says more than a billion Apple devices participate in its crowdsourced Find My network. Using Bluetooth, participating devices can detect a missing device or accessory and report its approximate location; Apple describes the process as anonymous and encrypted. That network behavior is not the same as a guaranteed live location: availability depends on device settings and conditions. [Apple Support]

What iPhone remote erase changes
Apple says erasing cannot be undone. For devices with iOS 15 or later (or iPadOS 15 or later), Find My can still locate the device after erase. If you file an AppleCare+ Theft and Loss claim, do not remove the device from Find My or your Apple Account, even if you erased it remotely. [Apple Support; Apple Support]

Protect your accounts, phone number, and recovery options
Watch for fake recovery messages
Be cautious of texts, emails, or calls claiming that your phone has been found or that support needs your password or verification code. Apple specifically warns about phishing messages and fake support calls; review your Apple Account security if you suspect someone is trying to gain access. [Apple Support]

Contact your mobile carrier if the phone is unlikely to return
Ask your wireless carrier about suspending service if you do not expect to recover the device. Carrier procedures vary by provider and region, so contact the carrier directly rather than relying on a universal process. Apple recommends this step for an unrecovered device. [Apple Support]
