Start by deciding where the game will be released, then choose the Chinese script and regional language variant to match. Prepare the game so text, graphics, audio, and store materials can be localized; adapt dialogue and cultural references to preserve the experience; and test each version in context. If you plan an official mainland China release or monetization, treat approval as a separate publishing and compliance process—not something a Chinese translation provides.

Choose the market and release path first

“Chinese” is not a single locale setting. Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau have different audience and release considerations. Identify the markets and storefronts you intend to serve before deciding whether one Chinese build is enough or whether you need regional variants.

Language support and official mainland publication are also separate decisions. The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s September 2026 market-entry report describes a distinct approval process for official mainland publication and monetization. That process should not be generalized to every global storefront or to players who may access a game through other channels.

Select the script and locale

Market Typical script choice Localization decision
Mainland China Simplified Chinese For an official mainland release, the MFAT September 2026 report says the game must be fully localized in Simplified Chinese for the ISBN application. Confirm current requirements with the publishing partner.
Taiwan Traditional Chinese Use Taiwan-appropriate vocabulary and phrasing; do not assume a version written for another Traditional Chinese audience will read naturally.
Hong Kong Traditional Chinese Review vocabulary and colloquial dialogue for Hong Kong. A shared Traditional Chinese build may suit some games, but character-driven writing and live content can benefit from market-specific treatment.
Macau Traditional Chinese Traditional Chinese is used in this market. The sources cited here do not establish a distinct Macau vocabulary specification or publication process, so verify the requirements for the intended platform and release.

Keywords Studios’ 2026 guidance notes that Taiwan and Hong Kong can differ in word choice and colloquial phrasing. A single Traditional Chinese version may be practical for some titles; games with distinctive character voices, humor, community posts, or frequent updates have more reason to commission tailored versions. Decide based on the audience, content, and resources rather than assuming either that every market needs a separate build or that one version always fits all.

Use explicit locale identifiers

Keep language, script, and region distinct in your localization setup and store metadata. Netflix Games’ internationalization requirements list zh-Hans for Simplified Chinese on iOS and in Netflix resource bundles, and zh-CN for Google Play. For Traditional Chinese, the same documentation lists zh-Hant for iOS and Netflix resource bundles, and zh-TW for Google Play. These are platform-specific examples, not universal codes; check the requirements for each actual storefront and delivery platform.

Make the game ready for localization

Localization is easier to manage when the game is built to support it. Microsoft’s game-localization guidance and Netflix’s platform requirements both emphasize preparing the content and giving language teams enough context to work accurately.

  • Externalize user-visible text. Store strings in translation resource bundles rather than embedding them in source code. Hard-coded English and text baked into images will not flow through a normal string-localization pipeline.
  • Keep keys stable and strings identifiable. Use durable keys and include notes for ambiguous or short text: where it appears, who says it, what it refers to, and how any placeholders behave. This is a practical way to support the documentation and translator queries recommended in the cited guidance.
  • Make text-bearing assets editable. Identify signs, maps, graphics, subtitles, menus, and other images containing words. Provide source assets or a documented process for replacing the text; do not assume a translated string bundle will update words inside an image.
  • Check character rendering in the actual build. Confirm that the chosen font and rendering pipeline display the target characters across menus, dialogue boxes, item names, signs, subtitles, and overlays. Requirements vary by engine and platform, so inspect the game rather than relying on a font checklist.
  • Prepare a context package. Give translators access to scripts, character biographies, a style guide, audio or video, a walkthrough, and playable builds where possible. Context helps resolve ambiguity and preserve consistent voice.
  • Include materials around the game. Plan to localize store listings, webpages, marketing assets, and support materials. Microsoft advises keeping these stylistically consistent with the game.

Adapt writing without losing the game’s intent

Translate what a line is doing, not just the words it contains. Preserve tone, character relationships, humor, and world-building. A joke that depends on wordplay or a local reference may need a different joke, or a different position in the exchange, to achieve the same effect. Microsoft’s game-specific guidance recommends this kind of adaptation rather than mechanically preserving a line that no longer works.

Give the language team enough scene context before asking for creative adaptation. A translator should know the speaker, audience, relationship, emotional beat, and what the line needs to accomplish. That makes it easier to preserve a character’s intent while changing the wording or reference.

Do not assume all Chinese-speaking players share the same preferences, or that every game needs a broad cultural redesign. Make adaptation decisions for the target market, genre, intended rating, and release plan. Distinguish linguistic naturalness and audience expectations from legal or approval requirements.

Handle audio and subtitles in context

If foreign-language speech remains in the game, review how players will understand it. Guidance hosted on Alibaba Open Platform recommends subtitles for substantial foreign-language audio; treat this as platform-hosted guidance, not a universal legal rule. Check subtitle timing, line breaks, readability, and synchronization in the actual scene rather than reviewing the text file alone.

Treat content guidance according to its authority

Alibaba Open Platform’s Chinese game-text guidance recommends standardized Chinese conventions for imported games, including Simplified Chinese for imported-game text, standard Chinese characters for names and locations, and subtitles for substantial foreign-language speech. It also discusses user-generated text, conduct, religion, and cultural material. The fact that this guidance is hosted by a platform does not establish that every recommendation is binding law. Confirm which rules apply to the particular market, platform, and release path.

Review each localized version in the game

Text that reads well in a spreadsheet can still fail in the product. Have language-specific reviewers inspect the localized game and its assets in context. Microsoft recommends reviewing or testing each localized language version, and its game guidance emphasizes providing the team with material such as scripts, biographies, style guides, audio, walkthroughs, and playable builds.

  • Inspect menus, dialogue, tutorials, item names, notifications, maps, signs, and store-facing materials.
  • Check that text fits buttons and dialogue boxes, that characters render correctly, and that subtitles appear at the right point in the scene.
  • Review terminology and character voice for consistency across the full game, not only individual strings.
  • Ask reviewers to flag lines whose meaning or intent is unclear, rather than forcing a literal translation.
  • For live-service games, plan for ongoing linguistic review. Keywords Studios’ 2026 guidance recommends specialists for the intended market variant; terminology and community language can change over time.

Plan separately for an official mainland China release

This path applies to studios pursuing official mainland publication or monetization. The MFAT report, published in September 2026, describes the following broad process. Requirements can change, and the report’s timing range is not a guarantee; confirm current details with a mainland operator and publisher and relevant official sources before launch.

  1. Find a mainland operator and publisher. The report says a foreign company cannot apply directly for the Game Publishing ISBN and must work with a mainland Chinese operator and publisher.
  2. Register software copyright for the imported game. The report includes registration of a software copyright certificate in the described process.
  3. Review content and compliance with the partners. The report describes review of prohibited-content categories and attention to cultural messaging, character design, dialogue, art style, and potentially sensitive political metaphors or symbols. These are approval considerations, not a public checklist that guarantees acceptance.
  4. Prepare the submission materials. The report lists the game build, scripts, text, video, assets, monetization design, real-name authentication, and anti-addiction mechanisms among the materials and systems involved.
  5. Plan for operational and user-protection requirements. The report identifies items such as data localization where personal information is collected, real-name verification, age-based protections, a healthy-gaming splash screen, privacy terms, and display of the license number.
  6. Submit through the publishing route. The report describes submission of the ISBN application through the publisher and provincial publishing authority to the National Press and Publication Administration. It says approval timing is not published and may take from a few months to a year or longer; do not treat that range as a deadline or promise.

The Ministry of Education’s regulation on the use of the national common language in information technology products states in Article 3 that such products “shall conform to the language standards issued by the state.” The regulation was published on January 3, 2023, and took effect on March 1, 2023. Its application depends on the regulation’s scope; it is not, by itself, a universal game-localization checklist.

Turn the work into a release checklist

  • Define target markets, storefronts, and whether official mainland publication or monetization is part of the plan.
  • Select Simplified and/or Traditional Chinese variants and decide whether Taiwan- and Hong Kong-specific versions are warranted.
  • Confirm platform-specific locale identifiers and store metadata requirements.
  • Externalize strings, prepare editable text assets, and provide translators with context and playable builds.
  • Adapt humor, voice, references, and audio presentation to preserve the intended experience.
  • Review each build in context with language-specific reviewers, then plan ongoing review for live content.
  • If pursuing official mainland release, begin the separate publishing and compliance work with a qualified mainland operator and publisher.
