You can livestream prerecorded music performances on YouTube by sending them through an encoder connected to YouTube Live Control Room. To keep the broadcast running, prepare a tested playlist or playback sequence, use a reliable upload connection, monitor stream health, and confirm you have the rights to every recording and visual. YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; do not assume a longer broadcast will be saved in full.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- An encoder workflow that can play your prerecorded performances in sequence and send the output to YouTube. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders but does not endorse a particular looping application.
- The necessary rights to broadcast the music and other material worldwide. Confirm rights for the recording, composition, performers, and any visuals or other third-party content.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your selected stream bitrate, plus time to test and monitor the feed.
Prepare the music and clear the rights
Do not treat a song’s availability online, a purchase, or a license from one participant as automatic permission to livestream it. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the provider to hold all necessary rights for the live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can result in a placeholder, temporary interruption, or termination if the content continues. Even if you have a license, YouTube says to ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for licensed third-party material; having permission alone may not prevent an interruption. Possible routes for using material include permission, applicable copyright exceptions, public domain, Creative Commons terms, YouTube Audio Library, and Creator Music. YouTube notes that none guarantees you will avoid a copyright claim or strike. Check the actual terms and rights for each item before scheduling the broadcast; see Copyright on YouTube.

Set up the encoder and start the continuous stream

Enable livestreaming
Open YouTube Live Control Room and enable livestreaming if you have not used it before. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. Follow the current YouTube encoder setup steps for the channel and event type you are using.

Create the live stream and protect its key
Create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in screenshots, stream descriptions, or guides, and reset it if it is exposed.

Build and test the playback sequence
Configure the encoder or playback system to send the prerecorded performances in the intended order and repeat them if needed. YouTube’s official instructions do not prescribe a playlist or looping application, so confirm that your chosen setup continues playback across file transitions and can recover from a playback error. Test with representative audio and moving-image content, not just a static screen.

Choose supported video and audio settings
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution table for the resolution you intend to send. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264/H.265/AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Match the bitrate to the selected resolution and your actual upload capacity rather than copying a bitrate without its context.

Preview, then go live
Start the encoder’s outgoing feed and wait for it to appear in Live Control Room. Preview the picture and sound, check the stream-health messages, and only then start the public broadcast. Keep Live Control Room or the encoder’s monitoring view available while the stream runs.
Keep the broadcast reliable
Continuous streaming is not guaranteed merely because the playlist is long. YouTube recommends testing with representative content and monitoring stream health. Its streaming tips warn that network disruption can break a stream, so leave upload headroom above the encoder’s bitrate and avoid saturating the connection with other traffic.

- Use a bitrate that fits the connection under normal conditions, not only its best measured speed.
- Test the full playback path, including transitions between files, audio levels, and any graphics or overlays.
- Check encoder and Live Control Room warnings during the broadcast; respond to a dropped feed or playback failure rather than assuming the playlist will restart itself.
- Choose software or hardware encoding according to whether it can reliably play and encode your sequence, the production complexity you need, your available bandwidth and backup connectivity, and your ability to monitor and recover. YouTube supports both approaches but does not establish that one is best for prerecorded music broadcasts. Its live streaming tips describe the options; expensive equipment is not required to start.
Will YouTube save the full stream as a replay?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, according to its encoder setup page. That guidance does not establish that a stream longer than 12 hours will be archived in full. If replay availability matters, plan around the documented under-12-hour behavior and check YouTube Help for current instructions before the event.
