To livestream a podcast episode on YouTube with Streamlabs Desktop, connect your YouTube channel, add your microphone and any optional camera, set up the show scene and stream details, preview the feed, then select Go Live. First check that your channel is eligible to livestream. Afterward, organize the finished recording separately if you want it to appear as a YouTube podcast episode.

Before you start: check YouTube livestream eligibility

YouTube requires a verified channel and no livestream restriction in the previous 90 days. If you have not livestreamed before, verify the channel and allow time for YouTube’s setup process before scheduling the episode. See YouTube’s livestream requirements.

You’ll also need Streamlabs Desktop, a microphone, and a stable internet connection. A camera is optional: a podcast can be audio-led with a static scene or show artwork, or you can include video of the hosts. The cited YouTube and Streamlabs guides do not require particular microphone or webcam models.

How to livestream a podcast with Streamlabs Desktop

1. Connect Streamlabs Desktop to YouTube

  1. Open Streamlabs Desktop and sign in or connect the YouTube account for the channel that will host the podcast.
  2. If prompted, authorize access to the account. Streamlabs’ YouTube livestream guide covers signing in and configuring the stream. Its Desktop getting-started guide covers platform selection, permissions, and stream details.
  3. Grant camera and microphone permissions if your operating system asks. Streamlabs may detect connected devices; choose the actual devices you intend to use rather than assuming a particular model is required.

2. Add your podcast audio and optional video

  1. Add or select the microphone source you will use for the conversation. Speak at a normal level and check that the audio meter responds.
  2. If the show includes on-camera hosts, add the intended camera and check framing. If not, use a suitable static visual or show scene instead.
  3. Arrange the scene so that the audience sees what you intend throughout the episode. Before going live, confirm the active microphone and camera sources; a device can be connected without being the one currently selected.

Streamlabs’ exact controls can vary with Desktop updates and connected hardware. Follow the current in-app prompts for adding sources and selecting the platform; the official getting-started guide is here.

3. Enter the stream details

Provide the episode’s title and other requested stream details, then check that the destination is the intended YouTube channel. If you use a stream key rather than signing in through account authorization, select the correct key in the relevant stream settings and keep it private: anyone with access to the key may be able to broadcast to your channel. The Streamlabs guides describe account connection and stream setup; available controls may change over time.

4. Preview and test before the public episode

  1. Review the Streamlabs scene and verify the microphone, optional camera, and any visual elements.
  2. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and confirm that the event is accessible as intended. YouTube recommends testing and checking the preview before the broadcast; see its encoder guidance.
  3. For a first show or a changed setup, run an unlisted or otherwise suitable test stream before the public episode. Listen for clear voice audio and watch for interruptions or missing video.
  4. During the actual episode, monitor audio and video rather than assuming the preview guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast.

5. Start the broadcast

When the YouTube destination, episode details, and preview are correct, use Streamlabs Desktop’s Go Live control and confirm any final prompt. Check the YouTube Live Control Room to ensure the broadcast is active. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started—“what you have at hand will do”—and production needs depend on the format; see its livestreaming guidance.

Make the recording a YouTube podcast episode

Livestreaming and podcast organization are separate tasks. YouTube Help explains: “On YouTube, a podcast is a playlist, and podcast episodes are videos within that playlist.” After the livestream, use the completed eligible recording as a video episode and organize it in the show’s podcast playlist. YouTube’s instructions are in Create a podcast in YouTube Studio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An MP3 by itself cannot be made into a YouTube podcast episode in Studio; upload or add a video. The podcast playlist should contain full-length episodes and be ordered for the show.

When RSS is a better fit for audio-first episodes

YouTube RSS delivery is a distinct option for audio-first releases or a back catalog, not a way to start a live broadcast. In supported countries and regions, YouTube can create videos with static images from selected RSS episodes and automatically upload new feed episodes. Availability depends on location. Check upload visibility and copyright or monetization status after setup.

RSS-published audio does not automatically update after publication. Re-uploading creates a new video and makes the old one private. YouTube’s RSS instructions also say RSS-uploaded podcast content cannot contain advertisements; host-read promotions, sponsorships, or endorsements must be disclosed using the branded-content setting and follow applicable policies. These instructions concern RSS uploads and should not be assumed to describe every livestream format. See YouTube’s RSS delivery help.

Copyright and show preparation

  • Use music, clips, images, and other material only when you have the necessary rights or permission. A livestream can be subject to copyright rules, and a recording does not remove that responsibility.
  • Check the YouTube preview, visibility, and event destination before the public show so the episode is not accidentally sent to the wrong audience or channel.
  • If the episode includes sponsorships or endorsements, use the applicable disclosure controls and comply with YouTube policies. The RSS-specific advertising restriction above applies to RSS-uploaded content, not as a blanket statement about livestreams.

The audience cannot hear the conversation

Verify that the correct microphone is selected and active, then speak and watch the audio meter. Check the YouTube preview as well as the Streamlabs scene; do not rely only on the fact that a microphone is plugged in.

The YouTube preview or event is wrong

Confirm that Streamlabs is connected to the intended channel and that the stream details and event visibility are correct. Test the event and verify its accessibility before the public episode, following YouTube’s encoder guidance.
