Open an EA game on Xbox and sign in with the primary EA Account you want to use; EA may send a one-time code to that account’s email. To change an existing connection, check EA Account settings > Connected Accounts and choose Unlink only if EA makes the control available. Unlinking can strand progress, purchases, downloadable content and rewards, and EA restricts some account changes by account age, switching frequency and account status.
What linking an Xbox account to an EA Account does
Your Xbox platform identity is connected to one EA Account for EA games and related services. The connection determines which EA profile receives game progress, purchases, downloadable content (DLC), expansions, memberships, rewards and other entitlements. It is not simply a console sign-in preference: changing the EA Account later can leave you without access to data earned or bought on the original connection.
EA Help’s current guidance, reviewed on 13 October 2026, says to begin the first-time connection from an EA game on Xbox. Use the primary EA Account, not a limited console sub-account. If the EA Account and Xbox account were created with the same email address, EA says they should connect automatically when the game loads. Otherwise, the game can ask for a one-time code sent to the email address associated with the EA Account.

Linking the wrong account can create a difficult recovery problem later because EA does not merge progress between accounts.

Check which EA Account is connected before changing anything
- Sign in to your EA Account in a web browser.
- Open Account settings.
- Select Connected Accounts.
- Find the Xbox or other platform entry. This identifies the platform account currently attached to that EA Account.
Use this check before launching a different game or creating another EA Account. If the Xbox account is already attached elsewhere, starting a new account will not move its progress. EA’s lost-progress guidance says progress cannot be transferred between EA Accounts.
Check every EA Account you can access, including accounts created with an older email address. The Xbox gamertag may be familiar while the EA login uses a different mailbox. If you find the platform listed under an account you can enter, recover that account rather than trying to establish a second connection.
Connected Accounts is also the place to confirm whether you are looking at the correct Xbox identity. This matters in households with several profiles or consoles. An Xbox subscription shared with family members does not make each limited profile an independent EA Account connection.
How to link an EA Account to Xbox
- On the Xbox console, open the EA game you want to play online.
- When the game asks you to sign in, choose the primary EA Account that should own the connection.
- Enter that EA Account’s email address and password if requested.
- Retrieve the one-time verification code from the EA Account email inbox and enter it in the game prompt.
- Finish the in-game sign-in flow and allow the game to return to its main menu.
If both accounts use the same email address, EA says the connection should happen automatically as the game loads. Automatic matching does not mean that Xbox sub-accounts can bypass EA requirements.
Keep the verification email window available while you complete the sign-in. A code is sent to the email associated with the EA Account you selected, so check that mailbox rather than the Xbox account’s contact address if they differ. If the message is not visible, check spam and filtered folders and make sure you are signing in to the intended EA Account.
Complete the connection from the game that displays the sign-in request. Do not create a new EA Account merely because the game does not recognize the Xbox profile immediately. First stop and inspect Connected Accounts; creating another login can attach the platform to an account that does not contain your existing history.
Use the primary account, not a child or shared-subscription sub-account
EA states that sub-accounts, including child accounts and other limited accounts that share Xbox subscriptions, cannot connect to EA Accounts to play online. Sign in with the full, primary Xbox account and the EA Account that belongs to the player. If a family member uses a restricted Xbox profile, changing email addresses will not remove the platform-level limitation.
Family or subscription sharing therefore does not change EA’s account requirement. The person who needs to play online must use an eligible primary Xbox profile and an EA Account that can complete email verification. If the restriction is an Xbox family setting or platform problem rather than an EA eligibility issue, Xbox support is the appropriate route.

If you do not know which email to use
First inspect Connected Accounts in EA Account settings. Check the email address on each EA Account you control, including older addresses, before creating anything new. If you can no longer sign in to the account that owns the connection, use EA’s account-recovery process before attempting an unlink. Recovery preserves the existing account relationship and its associated data; moving the Xbox account to a newly created EA Account does not transfer progress.
Recovery is especially important when the only problem is a forgotten password, an inaccessible old mailbox or uncertainty about which EA login you used. An unlink is a permanent account-management decision with possible entitlement loss; it is not a substitute for proving ownership of the original account.
How to unlink an Xbox account from EA
- Sign in to the EA Account currently associated with the Xbox account.
- Open Account settings, then choose Connected Accounts.
- Locate the Xbox platform entry.
- Select Unlink, if the control is available.
- Read EA’s warning about lost access and account entitlements.
- Complete any identity verification EA requests.
- Confirm only after you have decided where the Xbox account should go next.
The Unlink control can be unavailable because of account eligibility, a recent connection, a ban or suspension, or another account-specific restriction. An unavailable button is not an error you can safely bypass by repeatedly signing out or deleting the console game.
Unlinking in a browser changes the account association; uninstalling an EA game, clearing local saves or removing an Xbox profile does not perform the same operation. Read each warning on the live page, because EA may require an additional identity check before it allows the action.
When EA allows or blocks a change

The one-year rule and three-switch limit are policy conditions, not a promise that every account will display an active unlink option. The decision is made against the individual account’s current history and status.
“Three times in a rolling year” does not mean three changes reset on a calendar date or that a fourth change will be accepted automatically after a short wait. It is a limit described by EA for eligible accounts, while the live Connected Accounts control remains decisive. Keep a record of recent switches if you are managing several platform connections.
What you can lose by unlinking
EA warns that game progress does not transfer when a platform account is attached to a different EA Account. Unlinking can also make the following inaccessible:

- DLC and expansions.
- Memberships and subscriptions.
- Previous drops, rewards and other promotional entitlements.
- In-game purchases and items associated with the original EA Account.
Some entitlements may remain with the EA Account to which the platform account was first linked. That means unlinking is not a data-migration procedure: it removes or changes access, but it does not copy ownership to the destination EA Account. Do not confirm the warning until you have decided that losing access to those items is acceptable or have exhausted recovery options.

The risk applies even when the destination EA Account belongs to the same person. EA treats the accounts as separate profiles; proving that you own both does not create a progress merge. Keep the original EA Account credentials and recovery information in case you need to access entitlements that remain there.
Game-specific effects to check first
EA SPORTS FC
EA says unlinking the platform account that is currently active in the EA SPORTS FC Web App or Companion App can remove access to those apps. If another eligible platform account is available, EA advises changing the active platform account first. That preparation reduces one known failure mode but does not remove the general risk attached to unlinking.
If the web or companion app is important to your team management, transfer planning or other activity, sign out and review which platform is active before confirming. Do not assume that unlinking on Xbox automatically preserves app access.
Apex Legends
EA warns that Apex Legends players can encounter problems after unlinking, including Battle Pass leveling issues, missing item unlocks and other errors. If Apex progression and cosmetics matter to you, account recovery is the safer first choice than moving the Xbox connection.
These are title-specific warnings in addition to EA’s general progress and purchase warning. Check the game you actually play before deciding; the absence of a warning for another title does not turn unlinking into a transfer process.
If you cannot unlink or cannot sign in
The Xbox account is linked to a different EA Account
Do not create several new EA Accounts and test them one by one. Use Connected Accounts to identify the EA Account that owns the Xbox connection. If you cannot access that email address or password, start EA account recovery. EA specifically warns that progress will not transfer to another EA Account, so recovery is the route that protects the original profile.
If you discover an unfamiliar EA Account, treat it as an account-access issue first. Gather the details requested by EA’s recovery flow and avoid confirming an unlink until you know which profile holds your content.

The Unlink button is missing or disabled
Check the timing and status conditions in the table above. A link made less than one year ago cannot currently be unlinked and relinked to another account under EA’s guidance. A disabled, banned or suspended EA Account also cannot unlink its platform account. If the account appears eligible but the control remains unavailable, use EA support rather than trying to force the change through the console.

Repeatedly launching the game, reinstalling it or removing the Xbox profile cannot override an account-level restriction. Save a screenshot or note of the message shown on the Connected Accounts page so support can understand the exact block.
You cannot complete identity verification
Make sure you can receive mail at the address on the EA Account and check spam or filtered folders for the verification message. If the email address is inaccessible, recover the EA Account first. Unlinking without proving account ownership is intentionally restricted because it could expose purchases and progression.
Do not share a one-time code with another person. If the code expires or the prompt is closed, restart the legitimate sign-in flow and request a new code through the game or EA page.

EA’s troubleshooting guidance directs users with an Xbox-specific platform problem to Xbox support. This is appropriate when the console account itself cannot sign in, has a family restriction, or shows a platform-service error separate from EA Account eligibility.
Choose recovery or unlinking

In most cases, recovery is the lower-risk choice because it leaves the established relationship intact. Unlinking is appropriate only when you can access the current account, understand what may become inaccessible and see an eligible control on the live page.

If EA permits the unlink, sign in to the destination EA Account from the next EA game launch and complete the one-time email verification when prompted. The new connection does not import the old account’s progress or purchases. Keep the original EA Account credentials and recovery email even after switching, because entitlements that remained with the first account may still require that account for access.
Use the destination account deliberately. Confirm its email address before entering the code and make sure it is the account you intend to keep. A second mistaken link can consume part of the allowed switching history without solving the original problem.

If the game continues to show the old profile, close it completely, restart the Xbox and sign in again. These steps refresh the session; they do not override EA’s eligibility rules or transfer data. If the platform entry still appears under the old EA Account, stop repeating the unlink attempt and contact EA support with the account details requested through its official help flow.

Key checks before you confirm
- Confirm the exact Xbox account and EA Account shown under Connected Accounts.
- Verify that you can access the EA Account email for one-time codes and identity checks.
- Check whether the platform link is less than one year old.
- Count recent linked-account changes against EA’s up-to-three-times-in-a-rolling-year policy.
- Make sure the EA Account is not disabled, banned or suspended.
- Review the effect on progress, DLC, expansions, memberships, rewards and purchases.
- Check EA SPORTS FC Web or Companion App and Apex Legends consequences if you play those titles.
- Use recovery before unlinking whenever the real problem is lost access to the original EA Account.
- Record which EA Account owns the connection and retain its recovery details.
EA can change account policy and interface labels. Before making the final change, verify the live Connected Accounts page and the latest EA Help instructions for your account and game.

EA says child and other limited sub-accounts that share Xbox subscriptions cannot connect to EA Accounts to play online. Use an eligible primary Xbox account instead.
Will unlinking affect EA SPORTS FC or Apex Legends?
It can. Unlinking the platform active in the EA SPORTS FC Web or Companion App can remove app access. Apex Legends players may see Battle Pass, item-unlock or other errors, so recovery is safer when existing progression matters.
