Google Messages does not automatically share your calendar or broadcast your schedule. But message previews, profile details, and RCS interaction indicators can reveal information to people nearby or to the people you message. Adjust the relevant Android and Messages settings separately: each controls a different kind of exposure.
What Google Messages can—and cannot—reveal
A lock-screen preview can expose the contents of a message to someone who can see your screen. Your Messages profile can share your Google Account profile name and picture, depending on the audience you choose. With RCS chats, read receipts and typing indicators can show limited interaction status to a correspondent. Repeated response patterns could also let someone infer habits, but that is an inference—not a documented schedule-sharing feature.
Google says location is collected when you choose to share it in Messages. That is different from the app continuously broadcasting your whereabouts. None of these settings controls your calendar.
Hide message previews on your Android lock screen
Start here if your concern is someone nearby reading a notification. Android can hide sensitive notification content or suppress lock-screen notifications. Google’s general route is Settings → Notifications → Notifications on lock screen, but menu names and available controls vary by device and Android version. - Open Settings on your phone and go to Notifications.
- Open Notifications on lock screen or the closest matching option.
- Choose to hide sensitive content, or turn off lock-screen notifications if you do not want them displayed there.
If the menu labels differ, search Settings for lock screen notifications. Some phones also provide app-specific notification controls; use those if you want to restrict Messages without changing notifications for every app. Hiding details protects the preview from casual viewing, but it does not prevent the recipient from seeing a message on their own device.
Choose who can see your Messages profile
Google Messages lets you control who receives your Google Account profile name and picture through profile sharing. In Messages, tap your profile picture, open Your profile, and choose one of these audiences:

Google says profile sharing does not make your profile public; sharing happens after you message another Google Messages user. This setting concerns your profile name and picture, not your email address. Google says your phone number is used to verify your account and help other Messages users connect, and is not shown in other Google apps in this profile-sharing context. Decide whether to keep RCS read receipts and typing indicators
Read receipts and typing indicators are RCS features. They can provide a correspondent with limited information about whether you have read a message or are typing; they do not disclose your calendar or exact availability. Google says turning off RCS chats also turns off these indicators, so it is a broader tradeoff rather than a separate privacy switch.

- In Google Messages, tap your profile picture and open Messages settings.
- Open RCS chats; some app versions may call this area Chat features.
- Review the available controls. If you turn RCS chats off, expect typing indicators and read receipts to turn off too.
Turning RCS off means giving up RCS features, and message behavior can vary by region, carrier, and the recipient’s app. Google describes the effect of this setting in its RCS security and settings help; its Google Messages overview also identifies indicators and read receipts as RCS features when supported.

If you do not want to share location through Messages, do not choose a location-sharing action in a conversation. Google says it collects location when you choose to share location in Messages, and identifies removing Messages’ location permission in device settings as the control for stopping that collection.

To review the permission, open Android Settings, find Apps and Messages, then open Permissions and change Location. Exact labels vary by device. Removing the permission affects the app’s ability to use location; it is not evidence that Messages had been continuously broadcasting your location.
