You can reduce, but not eliminate, a robotaxi’s data collection. Before booking, read the operator’s rider privacy notice, limit your phone’s precise-location permission, enter pickup details manually when that option exists, and disable optional cabin analytics, voice features, live-location sharing, marketing, and third-party integrations. During the trip, use only the operator’s documented controls; covering cameras, blocking microphones, or using a GPS pouch does not control vehicle systems and could interfere with safety. Afterward, use the provider’s privacy dashboard or request process to review, correct, download, delete, or opt out of eligible data uses. Pickup, drop-off, route, vehicle-location, and some sensor data may still be processed for ride fulfillment, safety, fraud prevention, disputes, and legal obligations.
What a robotaxi needs to collect to provide a ride
A driverless ride involves several data layers, and the privacy control for one layer may not affect another. Separating them is the key to making realistic choices.

“Necessary” does not mean “every possible use is mandatory.” It means the operator may need a particular category to accept, route, secure, or document the ride. A separate analytics or entertainment feature can have a different legal basis and a different switch.
How do I stop a robotaxi from collecting my data before booking?
1. Identify the company operating the vehicle
The app that accepts your request may be a booking platform, while another company supplies the autonomous vehicle. Find the operator shown in the ride details, vehicle information, or service terms. Read that operator’s rider-specific privacy notice for your city or country rather than relying on a general corporate policy. Check the notice’s last-updated date and whether it covers the market where you will ride.

2. Separate required fields from optional permissions
Make a short list while reading the notice:
- Information needed to open or use the account
- Pickup, drop-off, route, and vehicle-location information used during a trip
- Phone permissions, including precise location, Bluetooth, notifications, contacts, camera, microphone, or photos
- Cabin video, audio, sound-detection, or other analytics
- Marketing, targeted advertising, sale or sharing, and promotional messages
- Information shared with payment providers, corporate travel programs, family or teen accounts, support vendors, or connected entertainment services
Do not assume that refusing a phone permission refuses vehicle-sensor collection. Those systems can operate independently.
3. Restrict precise phone location when manual entry works
If the service lets you type a pickup point and destination, enter them yourself and set the app’s location permission to “While Using,” “Ask Next Time,” or “Never,” depending on your phone and the service’s documented requirements. A manual pin can still reveal a location to the operator because the ride must be dispatched there; the change is that the app is not continuously reading your phone’s precise location to obtain it.
Test the workflow before you need the ride. Some services use a map pin, address search, or a nearby landmark. If turning off location prevents a safety check, vehicle handoff, or support function, restore only the permission required for that step.

Check whether the ride is connected to an employer, school, family manager, travel agency, payment account, or another platform. A payer or account administrator may receive pickup, drop-off, receipt, or trip-status information under that arrangement. If privacy is the priority, use a personal account only when the service rules and payment terms allow it, and read the linked organization’s notice separately.
5. Turn off communications you do not need
Disable promotional email, text, push notifications, and personalized offers in the account settings where available. Keep operational alerts if you need them to find the vehicle or complete a pickup. Marketing opt-outs normally do not stop transactional messages, safety notices, or legally required communications.

Can I turn off location tracking during a ride?
Usually, you can reduce the app’s access to your phone location, but you cannot stop the operator from processing the ride’s pickup, drop-off, route, and vehicle-location data while it transports you. The vehicle must know where it is and where it is going, and the service may need a trip record for safety, support, billing, fraud prevention, disputes, or legal obligations.
Waymo’s Services Privacy Policy, updated September 30, 2026, illustrates the distinction: it describes device-location collection during a trip or when the app is used with location services enabled, while also describing collection of pickup and drop-off locations, route details, trip history, and vehicle-related information needed to provide the service. Changing a phone permission therefore does not erase the operational trip record.
Uber’s rider help guidance gives an app-level example: location services are not required to use its app, riders can enter pickup and drop-off locations manually, and live pickup-location sharing can be paused or disabled. Those controls apply to the app experience described by Uber; they are not evidence that every autonomous-ride operator offers the same settings or that vehicle sensors stop collecting data.
Does a robotaxi record inside the car?
There is no universal answer. Interior video, audio, and analytics depend on the operator, vehicle, market, feature, and event that triggers recording.
Waymo’s published practice
Waymo’s current Services Privacy Policy says video is recorded inside vehicles during trips. It says audio is recorded during an active Rider Support call or when a rider actively enables the in-car microphones. The same policy describes exterior cameras and microphones, LiDAR, and radar as part of vehicle operation. Treat these statements as Waymo’s policy for the covered service and market, not as a rule for every robotaxi.

Tesla Robotaxi’s optional analytics
Tesla’s Robotaxi notice describes optional sharing of cabin-camera and sound-detection analytics that can be enabled in the Robotaxi app. Its notice also describes safety-event clips and separates those categories from ordinary ride-arrangement data. Look for individual switches rather than one assumption that “camera on” or “camera off” governs every recording purpose.

- Open the in-car display or ride app and look for privacy, cabin, microphone, camera, analytics, or data-sharing controls.
- Disable an optional feature before speaking or carrying out a sensitive activity.
- Do not cover a lens, unplug equipment, or obstruct a microphone. Hardware interference may affect safety, support, or the operator’s terms and is not a documented privacy control.
- If the notice is unclear, ask support which sensors are active, what event starts recording, who can access the files, and how long they are retained.

How to opt out of optional cabin, voice, and sharing features
- Open the ride or Robotaxi settings. Look for labels such as Cabin Camera, Sound Detection, Microphone, Voice, Analytics, Improve the Service, or Share Data.
- Read the explanatory text. Confirm whether the setting affects live processing, saved clips, de-identified analytics, or all of them. A switch may cover only one purpose.
- Choose the least-collection setting that still permits the ride. Keep emergency, support, or legally required functions if the service makes them mandatory.
- Check for a confirmation state. Take note of the setting’s displayed status and whether it applies immediately or on the next trip.
- Recheck after updates or account changes. App updates, a new vehicle, a family or corporate profile, or a different market can present different controls.
If there is no documented switch, do not promise yourself that a physical accessory will work. Ask the operator for its written procedure and record the date and response.
Third-party services, employers, and linked accounts
Privacy can change when you connect an entertainment account, use a corporate travel profile, or book through another platform. The operator may share trip details with a service provider, a corporate payer, a linked account, or authorities when permitted or required. An optional media service can also process what you play, search, or otherwise interact with under its own policy.
Waymo states that a third party’s privacy policy applies to third-party services used with its products and that certain ride details may be shared with an organization that requests or pays for a ride. Before connecting anything, ask:
- What exact fields are shared: route, timestamps, account identifier, receipt, or device identifier?
- Is the connection needed for the ride, or only for convenience?
- Can you disconnect it without cancelling the account?
- Which company handles deletion and access requests?
Use the operator’s own in-car entertainment only if you accept its stated processing. Otherwise, keep media on a personal device and avoid signing into a third-party service on the vehicle system.

What to do after the ride: access, deletion, and opt-outs
Start with the provider’s privacy dashboard
Look for Account, Privacy, Data, Download, Delete, or Your Privacy Choices. Depending on the operator and jurisdiction, you may be able to review or correct account details, download certain records, delete an account, or opt out of promotional messages and eligible sale, sharing, or targeted-advertising uses.
Submit a formal request when the dashboard is incomplete
Include the account email or other identifier, the trip date and approximate time, the city, and the categories you want reviewed. Ask specifically about trip history, pickup and drop-off records, support calls, cabin recordings, safety-event clips, linked-account disclosures, and retention periods. Do not send more identity information than the operator’s verification process requires.
Understand retention limits
Deletion may not remove every copy immediately. Waymo’s policy says account-associated information such as trip history may remain while an account is active and permits retention for specified purposes. Legal obligations, safety investigations, fraud prevention, disputes, security, and regulatory requirements can also limit deletion. Ask which records were deleted, which were retained, the reason for each exception, and the planned deletion date if one exists.
Use jurisdictional rights where applicable
The California Privacy Protection Agency summarizes California Consumer Privacy Act rights that can include knowing what personal information is collected, requesting deletion, and stopping sale or sharing, subject to applicable law and exceptions. Your rights, deadlines, appeal process, and exemptions depend on where you live and on the operator’s role in the transaction. A privacy request is not a guarantee that safety or legally required records will be erased.
A practical privacy checklist for your next ride

Common privacy mistakes and how to fix them
“I denied location permission, so the robotaxi cannot know where I went.”
Denial affects the phone app, not necessarily the vehicle’s navigation, dispatch, route, or trip history. Use manual entry to reduce app access, then read the operator’s retention and sharing terms.

“One camera switch controls every recording.”
Cabin video, safety-event clips, sound detection, support-call audio, and exterior sensing can have separate purposes and triggers. Inspect each control and ask support about anything the interface does not explain.
“The vehicle-data statement says the information is inaccessible, so no one can ever obtain it.”
Statements often include exceptions for safety events, consent, legal process, or other legal bases. Preserve the qualification when deciding what to disclose in the cabin.
“A privacy accessory will block the operator.”
A phone screen, camera cover, microphone accessory, or GPS-blocking pouch does not provide documented control over vehicle sensors. It can interfere with navigation, support, or safety and is not a substitute for software settings or a rights request.
“Deleting the app deletes the trip.”
Uninstalling an app does not itself submit an account-deletion request or erase records held by the operator, a payer, or a connected service. Use the documented privacy process and request confirmation.
Questions to ask when the notice is unclear
- Which data is required to request, complete, bill, and support this ride?
- Does the app need precise phone location, or can I enter a pickup point manually?
- Is cabin video recorded continuously, only during an event, or only after a feature is enabled?
- When is audio captured, and can I disable microphones without losing emergency support?
- Are trip and sensor records linked to my account, device, payment method, or corporate profile?
- How long are each of those categories retained, and what exceptions extend retention?
- Who receives trip details, including payers, family managers, vendors, platforms, and authorities?
- Which access, correction, deletion, and sale-or-sharing opt-outs apply in my location?
Connected vehicles are, in the words of California Privacy Protection Agency Executive Director Ashkan Soltani in a July 31, 2023 agency announcement, “effectively connected computers on wheels.” For a rider, that means privacy is managed through several layers rather than one master switch: minimize optional phone and account access, decline features you do not need, understand what the vehicle must process to operate, and use the operator’s rights tools after the trip.
