You can limit Spotify’s use and sharing of listening data, but no single setting described here stops all collection. Turn off Listening activity to hide your listening from followers, use a Private Session to temporarily keep listening out of Friends Activity and recommendation personalization, and opt out of Tailored Ads to narrow ad personalization. These controls do different jobs.
What Spotify means by listening data
Spotify’s U.S. Privacy Policy says it collects Usage Data that can include streaming history, searches, playlists, browsing history, account settings, and interactions. The policy describes collected data; it does not say every item is used for every purpose. Spotify says it keeps streaming history for the life of an account, for example to provide retrospective playlists and personalized recommendations. After account deletion, this category is deleted or de-identified subject to limited retention exceptions in the policy. Spotify’s U.S. Privacy Policy is effective July 1, 2026; terms and rights may differ by location and account type.
Choose the control that matches your goal
| Control | What it changes | Scope and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Listening activity off | Sharing listening activity with followers’ Friend Activity feed. | Changes social visibility; it does not itself delete Spotify’s retained streaming history. Spotify Support |
| Private Session | Friend Activity visibility, recent-artist profile updates, and recommendation personalization during the session. | Temporary, account-level, and applies across connected devices; ends after six hours or when Spotify restarts. Spotify Support |
| Tailored Ads off | Use of data for tailored advertising. | Ads may still use registration information and real-time Spotify use; some podcast advertising controls are separate. U.S. Privacy Policy, Spotify advertising information |
| Download your data | Lets you request access to personal data Spotify must provide under applicable law. | An access request, not an opt-out. U.S. Privacy Policy |
| Account deletion | Account closure and deletion or de-identification of account-linked data categories under policy terms. | Some data may be retained for limited reasons, including legal obligations, fraud protection, or legal claims. Spotify account closure instructions |

Use a Private Session for temporary listening privacy
Spotify says a Private Session does not share listening in Friends Activity, update recently played artists, or use session listening to personalize recommendations while the session is active. It is an account-level setting, so it applies across connected devices. Spotify Support describes it as a way to listen privately without sharing listening activity. Spotify’s Private Session instructions
- On mobile or tablet: Tap your profile picture → Settings and privacy → Privacy and social → turn on Private Session.
- On desktop: Open your profile picture and choose Private session.
The session ends automatically after six hours or when Spotify restarts. Spotify also says listening in a Private Session will not affect recommendations or appear in Wrapped. This control does not mean Spotify stops collecting all listening or usage data; the U.S. policy separately describes streaming-history collection.

Delete account data by closing the account
Follow Spotify’s account closure process to request account-data deletion. Deleting playlists or saved tracks only removes those items; it is not the same as deleting account data. Spotify lists limits to deletion where data remains necessary, an overriding interest applies (such as fraud protection), a legal obligation requires retention, or data is needed for legal claims. Some information may be retained for a limited period after deletion. Spotify account closure instructions
