You can reduce political posts in recommended feeds, but no single setting blocks politics across an entire social app. Start by switching to a feed made only of accounts you follow where available, then use each app’s topic controls, keyword filters, or feedback tools. These controls affect different parts of the app, and the labels and availability can vary by account, region, and app version.
Why political posts appear—and what feed controls can change
Many apps combine posts from accounts you follow with recommendations selected by the platform. X labels these options For You and Following. TikTok’s Manage topics setting affects only the For You feed. A setting for recommendations therefore may not change posts from followed accounts, search results, notifications, or other areas of the app.
“Political” or “civic” content is also defined by each platform. Meta’s January 7, 2025 announcement described civic content as posts about elections, politics, or social issues, and said Facebook, Instagram, and Threads would use a more personalized approach to recommending it. Meta said followed-account civic posts on Facebook would be ranked more like other content, using explicit signals such as likes and implicit signals such as viewing. The announcement also described expanded user controls. Meta’s announcement explains that policy direction.

Facebook: turn off the Political Content default
Meta’s Facebook setting is called Political Content and appears under Content Preferences. Meta’s page, updated May 28, 2025, says the setting lets people see less political content by turning off the default option. Meta also warns that changing from the default may increase political content from accounts you follow and recommendations from accounts you do not follow. Open Facebook’s Content Preferences and look for Political Content; follow the labels currently shown in your app. The exact sequence of taps can change, so do not assume that an older menu path still applies. This control concerns Facebook’s feed recommendations and ranking; it is not a universal block on political posts throughout Facebook.
Instagram and Threads: check their current content controls
Meta has described expanded political-content controls as part of its broader approach to Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. However, the available information does not establish a current, account-independent menu path for Instagram or Threads. In each app, look under Content Preferences or Suggested Content and use the labels available to you. Do not assume the Facebook Political Content setting or its menu path is identical in the other apps.

X: choose Following, mute terms, or give recommendation feedback
Use Following to avoid For You recommendations
X says its For You timeline combines posts from accounts you follow with recommendations from accounts you do not follow. Following shows posts from accounts you follow. Selecting Following is the broadest built-in way to avoid For You recommendations while keeping a feed of followed accounts. It does not remove political posts made by those accounts. X explains its recommendation approach and timeline choices.
Mute specific words or hashtags
X lets you mute words, phrases, usernames, emojis, or hashtags. Its help page says muted terms apply to notifications and the Home timeline. This is more targeted than switching timelines: choose terms that match the political content you want to filter, while recognizing that posts using different wording may still appear. X’s recommendation help covers these controls.
Use “Not interested” on For You
On a For You post, use Not interested in this post or Not interested in this Topic when those options are offered. X says this feedback helps it recommend less of that type of content. Feedback adjusts recommendations; it does not remove every post on the subject.

Check whether Politics Snooze is available
X’s July 2026 Media Literacy Action Plan describes a Politics Snooze function that can restrict politics on For You for certain users. Because X qualifies availability, check whether it appears on your account rather than expecting it as a universal setting. X’s Media Literacy Action Plan describes the feature.

Reduce political topics in Manage topics

In TikTok, go to Profile → Menu → Settings and privacy → Content preferences → Manage topics.

Adjust the topic sliders to reduce topics that overlap with the political content you want to see less often, then tap Save.

You can also reach the control from a For You video: tap Share → Why this video → Adjust your For You → Manage topics. TikTok says these preferences apply only to For You—not Following, your profile, or your inbox—and may take time to affect recommendations. Topic labels may not map neatly to every political post. TikTok’s Manage topics instructions give the current steps and scope.
Filter particular keywords
TikTok keyword filters remove content containing words you specify, including variations and hashtags, from selected feeds. Use them for recurring terms rather than treating them as a broad political-content switch. Their effect depends on the terms and feeds selected. TikTok describes keyword filters in its recommendation and feed controls guidance.
Give feedback or refresh the feed
Use Not interested on a For You post to signal that you want less similar content. If recommendations remain far from your preferences, TikTok also offers a feed refresh tool. Feedback changes recommendations, while a refresh resets the For You feed’s recommendation starting point; neither guarantees that political posts will be absent. See TikTok’s guidance on how it recommends content.

If political posts keep appearing

Check which feed you are viewing. A recommended feed and a feed of followed accounts have different sources.

Review the scope of the control: TikTok Manage topics is For You-only, while X muted terms also cover notifications.

Use more precise terms when a keyword filter is available, and use recommendation feedback for content that does not fit a simple keyword list.
