The reliable way to reduce personalized chatbot recommendations is to change the setting that supplies the data, then remove data that was already collected. First identify the service and account type. Next turn off memory or personalization, delete the chats or saved memories that contain the unwanted details, disconnect any connected app that supplied them, and disable model-improvement use separately. For a sensitive one-off question, use an unpersonalized temporary chat.
Those actions reduce future personalization; they do not make a conversation instantly disappear. Chatbots may retain temporary copies for safety, continue ordinary service processing, or keep records under workplace policies. The controls below explain what each major setting changes and what it leaves behind.
Personalization, chat history and model improvement are different controls
People often look for one privacy switch, but recommendation systems usually draw on several independent sources. A chatbot can use a saved fact such as your dietary preference, refer to earlier conversations, store activity for account history, or use eligible conversations to improve its models. Safety monitoring and abuse prevention are separate operational processing as well.

Use the setting that matches your goal. If you do not want a food allergy, health concern or purchasing preference to shape future answers, change personalization and remove the saved source. If you only want to stop model training, change the model-improvement control as well. If the information came from an app, deal with that app separately.

A practical sequence that works across services
- Identify the account. Determine whether you are signed into a personal account, a school or business workspace, or a managed Microsoft 365 tenant. Available labels and authority differ by account type.
- Find the personalization source. Look for Memory, Personalization, Personal Intelligence, chat-history reference or a similar control. Turn off the feature you do not want and review any saved entries.
- Remove existing source material. Delete the specific chats that contain the detail and clear a separately saved memory. Deleting only one of those sources can leave the other available.
- Check connected services. Disconnect an app that supplied the information. This stops new retrievals; it is not a retroactive purge of text already included in chats.
- Decide about model improvement. A separate Data controls, Keep Activity or tenant policy may govern whether conversations are used to improve models. Change it if that is part of your objective.
- Use a temporary, unpersonalized chat for a one-off. Choose the unpersonalized option before sending the question. Starting in an ordinary personalized thread can expose existing memories before you change course.
- Set expectations about retention. Read the provider’s stated safety and feedback windows. A temporary mode limits account use; it is not a promise of zero retention.
How to stop ChatGPT using your data for recommendations
1. Review Memory and chat-history reference
In ChatGPT, open Settings > Personalization > Memory. Depending on your plan, region, platform and workspace, you may see controls for saved memories, reference to chat history, or related personalization features. Review the listed memories and remove entries that should not influence future responses. Turn off the reference options you do not want.
ChatGPT treats saved memory and chat-history reference as separate concepts. Turning off Reference chat history schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion within 30 days, according to OpenAI’s Memory guidance. The original conversations remain in your history unless you delete them separately. A saved memory derived from a deleted conversation can also remain until you remove the memory itself, so check both locations.
2. Delete the chats that supplied the detail
Delete relevant conversations from the chat list after clearing the memory. Target the chats that contain the personal fact, not just the latest conversation in which a recommendation appeared. If you retain a chat for your own records, assume its contents can remain available to the account’s normal history controls.
3. Turn off model-improvement use separately
For eligible personal accounts, the separate setting is in Settings > Data controls > Improve the model for everyone. Turn it off if you do not want new eligible chats used to improve models. This setting does not delete chat history, clear saved memories or undo personalization. Those actions require the Personalization controls and chat deletion steps above.
4. Start an unpersonalized Temporary Chat for sensitive questions
Choose Temporary Chat before beginning the conversation, then select the Unpersonalized option if you do not want existing memories to inform the answer. A temporary chat does not create or update memories and is not used to improve models while it remains temporary. OpenAI says it may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety.
If you save a temporary chat, it becomes a regular chat in your history and follows your account’s normal personalization and model-improvement settings. Treat saving as an explicit change of privacy mode, not as a harmless export.

5. Check apps and location signals
If a connected application supplied information, disconnect it in the relevant ChatGPT connection settings after deleting chats that already used its content. Disconnecting blocks future access but does not rewrite prior messages. Where location sharing is available for local recommendations, switch it off if you do not want location used for that purpose. Location control availability can vary by account and platform.

- Deleting a chat and deleting a saved memory are separate operations.
- Turning off model improvement changes future eligibility; it is not a history-erasure command.
- Temporary chats can be retained for up to 30 days for safety even though they do not create memories.
- Workspace or plan-specific controls may use different labels or be unavailable to an individual user.
How to turn off Gemini memory and reduce personalization
1. Check eligibility and account type
Google’s memory-based personalization requires a personal Google Account, an account holder aged 18 or older, and Keep Activity turned on. Availability can vary by country, account and product rollout. If you are using a managed school or work account, the personal-account instructions may not appear.
2. Turn off Memory
In Gemini, open Settings and help > Personal Intelligence and turn off Memory. This controls the memory feature that uses remembered information to personalize future responses. It is not the same as Keep Activity, which governs activity storage and related model-improvement use.
3. Delete chats containing unwanted details
Delete the conversations in which the personal information appears. Google notes that there may be a short delay before Gemini stops using deleted chats for personalization. Do not interpret a recommendation that appears during that interval as proof that the Memory switch failed.
If the information came through a connected app, do both tasks: delete the relevant Gemini chats and disconnect the app. Leaving either source in place can make the data available through the remaining path.

4. Decide how to use Keep Activity
Open Gemini Apps Activity and review Keep Activity. Turning it off stops future chats from appearing in activity and stops them being used to train Google’s models unless you submit feedback. It does not eliminate service, safety or abuse-prevention processing. Google also warns that connected apps may become unavailable when Keep Activity is off.

Keep Activity is an activity-storage and model-improvement control, not a substitute for turning off Memory. Conversely, turning off Memory does not automatically switch off Keep Activity. Set each according to the result you want.
5. Use Temporary Chat for a single sensitive question
Choose Temporary Chat before asking the question. Google’s current Gemini Privacy Hub says temporary chats are not used to train Google AI, but they may be kept with the account for 72 hours for response generation, feedback and safety. That short retention period is still processing; it is not immediate deletion.
Keep Activity-off chats have a similar qualification: Google says they may be retained for 72 hours for service, safety and feedback. If you send feedback, the associated content can become eligible for model-improvement handling under the provider’s stated rules.

6. Review automatic deletion and other Google activity
Gemini Apps Activity has an 18-month default auto-delete period. Google lists options of 3 months, 18 months, 36 months or no automatic deletion. Choose the period that fits your need, remembering that this setting governs activity storage rather than every copy created for safety or review.
Other Google services can save data independently. Web & App Activity and Location History have their own controls, and changing Gemini settings does not automatically change them. If a recommendation uses information from one of those services, review its setting too.
What remains after Gemini changes
- Deleted chats may take a short time to stop influencing personalization.
- Temporary and Keep Activity-off chats can be retained for 72 hours for response, feedback and safety.
- Google says chats reviewed by human reviewers and associated data may remain for up to three years even after activity deletion.
- Feedback can create a separate path for model-improvement use.
- Turning off Keep Activity can remove access to connected apps, while other Google activity controls may continue independently.

Understand the workplace scope
The documented enhanced-personalization scenario applies to Microsoft 365 Copilot work data, not a universal consumer chatbot switch. With consent, it can use private Microsoft 365 communications, Microsoft 365 usage signals, profile and role information, and data returned by connectors to tailor an individual’s experience.

Ask the tenant administrator to change the setting
The tenant administrator determines whether enhanced personalization is enabled for the tenant or a group. If you cannot see a control, that is expected in many managed environments; Microsoft’s documentation says to request a change through the administrator. Explain that you want enhanced personalization disabled for your account or group and identify whether the concern is communications, usage signals, profile data or connector content.
Expect feature trade-offs
Disabling enhanced personalization stops that scenario from using the listed work data for personalization, but it can also disable dependent features, including Copilot memory. The control is therefore a managed-workplace decision rather than a simple privacy toggle with no functional impact.
Changing the scenario does not erase Microsoft 365 messages, files or connector records. Those records remain governed by the organization’s retention, legal-hold and access policies. Ask the administrator which deletion or retention process applies if your goal is removal of the underlying work data, not just less personalization.

Why recommendations may continue after you change a setting
The old chat still exists
Turning off personalization does not automatically delete the conversation that supplied the preference. Delete the source chat, then clear a separately stored memory where the service offers one.
A second data source is still active
An app connection, location signal, Google activity service or workplace connector can provide similar information after one control is disabled. Trace the recommendation to each possible source instead of repeatedly toggling the same switch.

The service has not finished applying deletion
Gemini documents a short delay after chat deletion, and ChatGPT documents a deletion schedule of up to 30 days for information remembered from past chats after chat-history reference is disabled. During those windows, responses can reflect data that is scheduled for removal.

You changed model improvement instead of personalization
Model-improvement opt-outs address training eligibility, not the facts a chatbot already uses to tailor your session. Return to the Personalization or Memory page and remove the source data.
You used a temporary mode incorrectly
Temporary modes must be selected before the question is sent. On ChatGPT, choosing a personalized temporary chat can allow existing memories to inform the conversation; saving the chat converts it to a regular one. On Gemini, temporary status still permits the provider’s stated 72-hour service and safety retention.
Your workplace administrator controls the feature
Microsoft 365 Copilot users may be unable to change enhanced personalization themselves. Ask the tenant administrator rather than assuming the absence of a menu means the feature is off.

Google states that Keep Activity-off chats are not used for training unless the user submits feedback. Avoid sending feedback from a conversation you are trying to keep outside that workflow, or review the provider’s feedback terms first.
Limitations these controls cannot remove
- Safety processing: Providers may retain or inspect limited copies to detect abuse, protect systems and investigate incidents.
- Account records: A setting that stops personalization does not necessarily delete billing, authentication, audit or workplace records.
- Previously copied content: Disconnecting an app cannot remove text already quoted into a chat or a document created from that text.
- Human review: Google says reviewed Gemini chats and related data can remain up to three years, even when activity is deleted.
- Organizational retention: Microsoft 365 data can be subject to tenant retention schedules, legal holds and administrator access.
- Interface changes: Names, eligibility and menu locations can change by plan, region, platform and product rollout. Verify the labels shown in your account before relying on a control.
A final account check
After making changes, confirm that the memory list no longer contains the unwanted fact, the source chat is deleted, connected apps no longer have access, and the model-improvement setting matches your objective. For Gemini, check Keep Activity and its auto-delete period; for ChatGPT, check both Memory and Data controls; for Microsoft 365 Copilot, obtain confirmation from the tenant administrator.
Use temporary, unpersonalized chats for questions that should not influence future recommendations, but plan around the provider’s stated safety windows. The strongest practical reduction comes from combining source removal with the right future-use control rather than treating any single toggle as a complete privacy switch.
