You can limit some ways Meta uses information connected to Instagram through account activity controls, ad preferences, privacy settings, and information-access tools. There is no single switch that stops Meta from collecting or using every kind of information. The available controls have specific scopes, and Meta is changing their names and availability during a staged 2026 rollout.
Where to find Instagram’s privacy and ad settings
Start in Instagram’s settings and look for Accounts Center or Meta Account, then follow the labels currently shown for your account. Meta says cross-app choices such as personal details and ad preferences are managed in this central account area, which is gradually transitioning from Accounts Center to Meta Account. Settings specific to Instagram remain in Instagram; Meta gives tagging as an example of an app-specific choice. The exact labels may vary during the transition. Meta’s April 23, 2026 announcement describes the transition.
For a broader checkup, Meta’s Privacy Center overview groups guidance around sharing, security, collection, use, and ads. It also points to tools such as Manage Activity, Access Your Information, and Ad Preferences. Treat these as areas to review rather than assuming every control is in one menu or has the same label in every account.
How to turn off or limit activity from other businesses
Search the live account settings for Activity from other businesses. Meta announced on June 9, 2026 that this expanded setting would let people manage whether information businesses already share with Meta is used for personalized ads and other personalized content, including Feed and AI responses. Meta said the change concerns information businesses already share, not newly collected data. That is Meta’s description of the update, not a claim that no other information is collected or used.

Meta also said it would discontinue the older Your activity off Meta technologies control. The staged rollout was announced to begin in the United States and some other countries the following month, with additional countries to follow. Availability and labels may therefore differ by region and account. Older instructions may point to the retired name; look for the new setting or check again later if it is not yet available. See Meta’s June 9, 2026 announcement for its description of the change.
The older control, as Meta described it in 2023, let people review businesses that shared activity, disconnect specific businesses, or clear activity data then covered. Do not assume those exact actions remain available unchanged under the expanded setting. The setting concerns activity shared by other businesses; it is distinct from information you provide or generate while using Instagram.

Access, download, or transfer your Instagram information
Use Access Your Information to review available account information, or Download Your Information to keep a copy. Meta announced that these tools were available through Accounts Center and that Instagram and Facebook information could be downloaded together or separately. Meta also said Transfer Your Information had expanded to Instagram, including transfers of photos and videos to other services. These actions help you inspect or keep information; they do not, by themselves, change how every category of information may be used in the future. Details are in Meta’s October 17, 2023 announcement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteReview Instagram-specific privacy choices separately
A cross-app preference does not necessarily change Instagram-only settings. In Instagram’s settings, review the choices relevant to how you use the app, such as who can tag you. Use the current interface because the location and wording of settings can change, and do not assume that one central account preference controls every Instagram privacy option.

What these controls can—and cannot—do
| Tool or setting | What it addresses | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Activity from other businesses | Whether information businesses already share with Meta is used for personalized ads and other personalized content, as described by Meta’s 2026 announcement. | That all information collection stops, or that all information from Instagram use is covered. |
| Access, download, or transfer tools | Reviewing, keeping a copy of, or transferring available account information. | That future uses of information change or that every data category is erased. |
| Instagram-specific privacy settings | Choices tied to Instagram itself, such as tagging preferences. | That cross-app settings or all other data practices change. |
Meta says it personalizes experiences for 3.5 billion people who use its apps and services daily; that is Meta’s own company figure in its June 2026 announcement, not an independently audited estimate in that source. More importantly for your settings, no single preference described here guarantees that Meta will stop using all personal information. Check each control against its stated scope and the options actually shown in your account.
