To stop a Pixel routinely charging all the way to 100%, turn on Limit to 80% in Charging optimization. Google says this option is available on Pixel 6a and later. It can help prioritize long-term battery health, but leaves you with less charge for the day—so it is best for people who usually end the day with battery to spare.
How to limit your Pixel to 80%
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization.
- Turn on Use charging optimization.
- Select Limit to 80%.
These are Google’s documented steps for eligible phones. Menu wording can vary with device software. Google’s Pixel Phone Help says the option is available on Pixel 6a and later: Charging optimization on Pixel.
Should you use Limit to 80% or Adaptive Charging?
The two modes address different habits. Limit to 80% uses a fixed ceiling; Adaptive Charging aims for a full charge near the time Google predicts you will unplug the phone.
| Mode | Charge available | How it works | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limit to 80% | Routine charging is capped at 80%, so less charge is available for the day. | Sets a fixed charging limit to prioritize long-term battery health. | You usually finish the day with charge left and prefer the health-focused limit. |
| Adaptive Charging | Targets 100% near the predicted unplug time. | Learns charging habits and delays reaching 100% to reduce time spent fully charged. | You need a full charge but want it to finish closer to when you unplug. |
Google says Adaptive Charging needs about 14 days to learn your habits. A changed routine, such as travel, can keep it from turning on. On Pixel 4, it relies on overnight charging and an active alarm; Pixel 4a and later, including Fold, use learned charging habits. For Google’s device-specific details, see Charging optimization on Pixel.

When to turn off the 80% limit
If you expect a long day away from a charger, Google says you can turn off the limit to let the phone charge to 100%. That trades the routine health-focused cap for more charge on that particular day. You do not need a special charger to enable the setting; it is built into Pixel software.
Why a Pixel with the limit on may still reach 100%
Google says the phone needs a full charge every tenth cycle to keep battery-capacity readings accurate. When that happens, leave the phone plugged in for at least 30 minutes after the display reaches 100%. This is part of Google’s operating guidance, not evidence that the cap improves runtime by a particular amount.
Rank #2

What the setting can—and cannot—promise
Google describes the 80% limit as a way to help extend battery lifespan, but its guidance does not quantify how much longer a battery will last or promise a specific screen-time or all-day runtime improvement. The practical trade-off is clear: a lower routine charge in exchange for prioritizing long-term battery health. If you regularly need every bit of daily capacity, Adaptive Charging or temporarily turning off the limit may suit you better.
