Hulu does not provide a brightness slider inside its app that works the same way on every device. Screen brightness is set in your television’s or streaming device’s picture settings, and the menu names and options differ by manufacturer and model. The clearest example is a Roku TV, so the steps below use that platform, followed by guidance for other devices.
Start with the picture settings of your device
Hulu’s help material for its app does not describe a universal brightness control that appears across phones, tablets, consoles, and smart TVs. Because of that, the reliable place to adjust how light the picture looks is the device that is showing Hulu. On a TV, that means the TV’s own picture menu. On a streaming stick or box, it means that device’s display or video settings.
Lighten a Hulu picture on a Roku TV
These steps come from Roku Support Australia’s picture-mode guidance, updated February 24, 2026. Roku states that picture modes and settings vary with the TV model and the source, so your menu may look slightly different.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Start playing a Hulu show or movie so the picture is on screen.
- Press the Star button on the Roku remote to open the TV Settings menu.
- Select Picture Settings, then choose Picture Mode.
- Pick a mode that suits the room. Roku describes Standard for everyday viewing in moderately to very bright rooms, Vivid for rooms with a lot of light, and Movie for darker rooms.
- If the picture still needs tuning, select Customize picture and adjust Backlight or Brightness (see the table below for what each one does).
- Change one setting at a time, then check the picture with a typical scene before making another change.
Roku’s TV guide notes that some streaming channels assign the Star button a different function. If Star does not open the TV Settings menu while Hulu is playing, open the settings from the Roku home screen instead, or use another channel to reach the picture options.

Which control changes what
Backlight and Brightness are easy to confuse because both change how the screen looks, but they affect different parts of the image. Roku’s definitions, from the same support article, are:
| Control | What it changes | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Picture Mode (Standard, Vivid, Movie) | A preset combination of picture settings | First step for a picture that is generally too dim or too bright for the room |
| Backlight | Peak backlight level, the overall light output of the screen | When the whole picture needs more light |
| Brightness | How dark black sections appear | When shadows look washed out or crushed, not when the whole picture is simply dim |
| Local dimming / local contrast | Automatic, scene-by-scene dimming of screen zones | An optional contrast control on some models only; not a general brightness setting |
Roku’s guide states that the TV brightness setting applies across all inputs, while picture mode changes can be saved for each input and mode. That means a change you make for Hulu on one input may not match what you see on a game console or cable box connected to another input.

HDR picture modes on supported Roku TVs
On supported Roku TVs, HDR10 and Dolby Vision content use their own picture modes, listed as Dark, Normal, and Bright. When HDR10 or Dolby Vision content is no longer detected, your HDR-enabled TV automatically switches back to the previously selected picture mode, according to Roku’s official support article. If a Hulu title looks darker than others, check whether it is being shown in HDR, then try the HDR mode options. A dark picture does not by itself mean HDR is the cause, and the menu names and availability depend on your model.

- Update the software. Hulu’s help article on app and system updates, dated August 28, 2026, recommends keeping the Hulu app and the device software current. Update steps differ by device, and the article presents general guidance rather than a fix for brightness.
- Check that the device is supported. Hulu’s supported Android TV article, dated August 27, 2026, lists device compatibility requirements for that platform.
- Confirm you are changing the right input. Picture mode changes are saved per input, so adjust the setting while the Hulu source is active.
- Look at the source before blaming the screen. Some titles are mastered darker than others, and the picture will look dim regardless of settings.
Other devices and platforms
The Roku steps do not transfer directly to Samsung, LG, Apple TV, phones, or tablets. On those devices, look for a picture mode or display section in the TV or device settings and use the same logic: adjust the overall backlight or light output first, then the black-level or brightness control, then any advanced contrast feature. The exact names and paths are set by each manufacturer, so consult the instructions for your TV or device model for the precise menu.

- Choose a picture mode that matches the room’s light.
- Raise Backlight if the whole image is dim.
- Adjust Brightness only if black areas look washed out.
- Enable local dimming only if your model offers it and you want more contrast.
- Keep Hulu and the device software updated.
Making small changes in this order lets you see which control is responsible for the result, instead of stacking several adjustments at once.
