Open a photo on a supported iPhone, touch and hold the subject until an outline appears, then copy, share, drag, or save the cutout as a sticker. Apple supports photo cutouts on iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and later models running iOS 16 or later.
Lift a subject from a photo

Open the photo full screen in the Photos app. Apple also describes using the feature with photos in apps such as Messages or Safari, as well as in Quick Look and other places. See Apple’s iPhone guide to lifting a subject.

Touch and hold the subject you want to separate from the background. Wait for an outline to appear around it.

Copy or Copy Subject: Copy the cutout, then paste it into an email, message, note, or another app. Apple uses different labels in different contexts.

Drag into another app: Keep holding the subject, use another finger to open a document in a different app, and drag the subject into it.

What you need and what to check if it does not work
Apple lists photo cutouts for iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and later, with iOS 16 or later. If holding the subject does not show cutout actions, check your iPhone model and iOS version against those requirements. Apple’s guidance does not establish that every subject in every image will be isolated successfully.

No. Apple says a lifted subject cannot be pasted onto another photo. You can instead copy or drag it into another app, share it, or add it as a sticker where supported.
