Use Words With Friends to check whether a word is playable, then use a learner’s dictionary to understand it and a short review list to remember it. Those are separate tasks: a word appearing in a general dictionary—or a Scrabble word list—does not prove that Words With Friends accepts it.
Use Words With Friends to check whether a word is playable
For a disputed play, the game itself is the relevant check. Zynga’s Words With Friends Instant Games support page says the game draws on British and American dictionaries for English words and definitions. It reports more than 173,000 acceptable English words, but the page’s displayed update age was 1,697 days when accessed; treat that as a documented figure, not a guaranteed current total.
An external word list can help with study, but it answers a different game’s rules. Collins Official SCRABBLE Words, seventh edition, for example, is a Scrabble reference, not a Words With Friends authority. Its product page describes more than 280,000 permissible words, including inflected forms, and says the edition is endorsed for Scrabble tournament and club play from January 1, 2025. It does not provide definitions.

Look up the meaning in a learner’s dictionary
Once you know a word is accepted—or simply want to understand one you encountered—look it up in a learner-focused dictionary. The Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (OALD), tenth edition offers clear definitions, example sentences, pronunciation audio, vocabulary lists, and self-testing through My Word Lists. These features help explain how a word is used; OALD is not the game’s word-acceptance list.
Read at least one example sentence, not just the short definition. A useful note in your own words can capture the meaning you are most likely to remember. If pronunciation matters to you, listen to the audio and say the word aloud.

Build a short review loop after each game
- Choose a few unfamiliar words. After a game, write down only words you could not define or use confidently. A small list is easier to revisit than a large dump of playable words.
- Check the game’s definition, if available. Keep the in-game entry as the game-specific reference, while remembering that interface details can vary by app version.
- Read a learner-dictionary entry. Check the definition and an example sentence; use pronunciation audio when helpful.
- Make a compact note. Write a concise meaning in your own words and add one related word or form.
- Test yourself later. Cover the meaning, try to recall it, and then check the entry and example again. Oxford describes personal word lists and self-testing; this is a practical routine, not a measured guarantee of vocabulary gains.
- Verify contested plays in the game. If the question is whether a word is legal, test it in Words With Friends rather than relying on a general dictionary or Scrabble list.
Don’t confuse a big word list with everyday vocabulary
A game lexicon is built to decide which plays are permitted. A learner’s dictionary is organized to explain meanings and show words in use. That is why a long list of acceptable words does not, by itself, show that playing improves everyday vocabulary. No statistic quantifying vocabulary gains from Words With Friends was identified in the sources cited here.

Historical coverage should also be treated as historical. A 2014 TIME article about the app described searchable dictionary entries, definitions, rarity, pronunciation, and a Word of the Day feature at that time. It is not confirmation that every current version includes those functions. Check the help or interface for your installed version before relying on a particular feature.
