Tell viewers whenever AI has generated or materially changed content in a way that could be mistaken for an authentic person, statement, place, event or recording. Put the disclosure where people first encounter the content, using the publishing platform’s own disclosure control when one exists.
The exact trigger depends on the platform and the audience’s jurisdiction. On YouTube, realistic or meaningfully altered content is disclosed through the AI-use field during upload. In the European Union, AI Act Article 50 adds provider marking and deployer disclosure duties from 2 August 2026. There is no single label that satisfies every platform or country.
The rule in one sentence
If a reasonable viewer could mistake an AI-generated or AI-manipulated result for something that really happened, was really said or was really recorded, disclose the AI use clearly and before or at the viewer’s first exposure. Describe what was changed when that context prevents a misunderstanding.
That rule is intentionally practical rather than tool-based. The fact that an AI application was used is not, by itself, the deciding factor. A script brainstorm, a caption draft and a repaired audio track can involve AI without creating a synthetic depiction of reality. Conversely, a short generated insert can require disclosure if it makes a real location, public figure or event appear to show something that never occurred.

Apply two tests before publishing:
- Reality test: Could the material be taken as an authentic person, place, event, action or statement?
- Material-change test: Did AI substantially create or alter what viewers think happened, rather than merely helping you produce or polish it?
If either answer is yes, treat disclosure as required unless the platform or applicable law clearly provides an exception. Then check the current rule for the platform, country and format in which you will publish.
A 30-second decision test
- Identify the synthetic part. Write down whether AI generated pixels, frames, speech, music, text or a person’s apparent action. “AI-assisted” is too vague to guide a disclosure decision.
- Ask what a viewer would infer. Would an ordinary viewer believe the person really spoke those words, the event really happened, or the camera really captured that place or action?
- Separate production help from depiction. Outlines, scripts, idea generation, captions, routine beauty or lighting filters and audio repair are generally assistance. A fabricated interview, cloned voice, invented event or realistic added scene changes the depiction itself.
- Check the destination’s control. Use the platform’s built-in disclosure field where available. If the platform has no suitable control, add a plainly visible label in the post, video or opening description and comply with any local legal requirement.
- Confirm first-exposure visibility. View the published item as an audience member, not only in the editor. The label should be readable without requiring a viewer to guess, open an obscure menu or watch most of the content first.
YouTube: when disclosure is required
YouTube’s current Help guidance requires creators to disclose AI used to meaningfully alter or generate photorealistic content. The platform’s examples include realistic fabricated events, realistic footage added to an actual place, a professional athlete appearing to do something that never happened, a person appearing to give advice they did not give, fabricated conduct by a public figure and AI-generated music.
The examples are illustrative rather than an exhaustive list. A realistic synthetic scene can require disclosure even when it does not fit one of those exact examples. The deciding issue is whether the result could mislead viewers about a real person, event, place or statement.

YouTube distinguishes substantive synthetic depictions from routine assistance and minor edits that do not mislead viewers about what happened. Its examples of assistance or minor editing include:
- Using AI to develop an outline, script or ideas.
- Generating captions or subtitles.
- Routine beauty filters and modest color or lighting adjustments.
- Repairing or cleaning up audio.
- Non-realistic, animated or obviously fictional output that cannot reasonably be mistaken for a real recording.
This is not permission to hide a meaningful change under the label “filter.” If an effect changes a person’s apparent identity, words or actions, or makes an invented event look documentary, use the disclosure workflow.

How to disclose during a YouTube upload
- Open YouTube Studio and start the upload or editing workflow for the video.
- In the video details, open the Attributes section.
- Find the AI-use disclosure field and answer Yes when the video meets YouTube’s realistic or meaningfully altered-content criteria.
- Finish the rest of the upload settings and publish.
- After publication, open the watch page in a viewer-facing session and verify that the label appears. Do not rely only on the value you selected in Studio.
A “Yes” answer creates a viewer-facing disclosure. YouTube’s placement depends on the content and format. The platform’s May 27, 2026 update says labels for photorealistic and meaningfully AI-altered or generated long-form videos are being moved to a more prominent position below the player. For Shorts, the label appears as an on-video overlay. Less realistic, animated or slightly altered material may instead be identified in the expanded description.
YouTube’s automatic labels and corrections
YouTube can add labels without a creator selecting the field. Its stated sources include content made with YouTube’s own AI tools, files carrying C2PA metadata and material its internal systems detect as AI-generated or altered. The May 27, 2026 announcement describes a rollout of automatic detection for significant photorealistic AI use.
Recommended Free Tools
Automatic detection is not a substitute for your own review. Before publishing, inspect the result for realistic synthetic elements and disclose them even if Studio has not displayed a warning. Conversely, if YouTube labels material incorrectly, creators can change an incorrect disclosure in most cases. The Help guidance identifies exceptions, including labels tied to YouTube’s own AI tools, C2PA metadata and manual-review decisions.
YouTube says a disclosure by itself does not affect recommendations or monetization eligibility. Repeatedly failing to disclose qualifying content can lead to a manually applied label or enforcement action, including removal or suspension from the YouTube Partner Programme. Treat the field as a trust and compliance control, not as a ranking tactic.
European Union rules from 2 August 2026
EU AI Act Article 50 creates two different responsibilities. Providers are the organizations that place covered AI systems or outputs on the market; deployers are the people or organizations using AI output in a service, publication or other practical setting. A creator may be a deployer even when another company supplied the model.

Provider marking
For systems that generate synthetic audio, images, video or text, Article 50 requires providers to mark covered output in a machine-readable format that can be detected as artificially generated or manipulated. The technical solution should be effective, interoperable, robust and reliable as far as technically feasible.
This is a technical, provider-side obligation. A creator cannot replace it merely by typing “made with AI” into a caption when the law requires machine-readable marking from the system provider. Keep any metadata supplied by the tool intact when exporting, transcoding or reposting files, because removing provenance data can make automated detection and downstream labeling less reliable.
Article 50 includes an exception for standard editing or assistive functions that do not substantially alter the input data or its semantics, subject to the conditions in the legal text. That exception does not cover a realistic synthetic depiction simply because the creator used an editing interface rather than a standalone generator.
Deployer disclosure for deepfakes
Deployers must disclose AI-generated or manipulated image, audio or video that constitutes a deepfake. The disclosure must be clear, distinguishable and accessible no later than the first interaction or exposure.
For work that is evidently artistic, creative, satirical, fictional or analogous, the disclosure is limited to identifying that generated or manipulated content exists in a way that does not hamper the work’s display or enjoyment. The exception changes how the notice is presented; it does not erase the need to identify the synthetic element.

Deployer disclosure for public-interest text
Article 50 also addresses AI-generated or manipulated text published to inform the public about matters of public interest. Such text must be disclosed unless it has undergone human review or editorial control and a natural or legal person holds editorial responsibility for the publication. Whether a particular article falls within that category depends on its subject, publication context and editorial process, so document who reviewed it and who is responsible.
What the European Commission’s code does
The European Commission published a Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-generated Content on June 10, 2026. The code is a voluntary implementation framework. The underlying Article 50 transparency requirements are legal obligations beginning 2 August 2026; following the voluntary code is not the same as replacing the law.
Choosing the right disclosure approach
| Situation | Main question | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Realistic synthetic video, audio or image on YouTube | Could viewers believe the person, place, event or statement is authentic? | Answer “Yes” in YouTube Studio’s AI-use field and verify the viewer-facing label. |
| Obviously animated or fictional YouTube material | Could a reasonable viewer mistake it for a real recording? | Follow YouTube’s current classification; a notice may appear in the expanded description rather than the player. |
| EU publication containing a deepfake | Does AI-generated or manipulated media depict a person, event or action as if real? | Provide clear, distinguishable, accessible disclosure at first exposure, while preserving any required provider marking. |
| EU public-interest text made or altered by AI | Was there meaningful human review or editorial control, with an identified responsible person or organization? | Assess the Article 50 exception and retain evidence of the review and editorial responsibility. |
| Routine assistance or a non-substantive edit | Did the operation leave the input’s meaning and apparent reality substantially unchanged? | Apply the platform’s minor-edit policy and the legal text’s applicable exception; do not assume every “assistive” feature is exempt. |
| Posting across several platforms or countries | Do the destinations place labels in different locations or impose different thresholds? | Meet the strictest applicable requirement and check each platform’s current interface before publishing. |
How to write a useful label
A label should identify the existence of synthetic content and, when needed, the part that was generated or changed. “AI used” gives viewers little context. A specific notice such as “This video contains an AI-generated recreation of a location that was not filmed” tells them what they are seeing without claiming that every frame is synthetic.
Use plain language, sufficient contrast and a size that remains readable on a phone. Put the notice next to the content, in the player or post interface when the platform supports it, and in the opening description or caption as a second layer when the synthetic element is central. Do not bury a material disclosure in a long list of hashtags, credits or a page reached only through several clicks.

For artistic, satirical or fictional work covered by the EU exception, identify that generated or manipulated content exists while keeping the notice from obscuring the work. The appropriate wording depends on the format; the legal requirement is clarity and distinguishability, not a single mandated phrase.

Worked examples
Fabricated breaking-news scene
You generate photorealistic footage of a city street during an event that never occurred and present it beside real reporting. Viewers could reasonably treat the scene as evidence. Disclose it prominently, identify it as an AI-generated depiction and use YouTube’s AI-use field if it is uploaded there. If published to inform EU audiences about a public-interest matter, assess both the deepfake rule and the public-interest publication rule.
Real interview with a synthetic answer
You record a real guest, then replace the answer with generated speech that uses the guest’s apparent voice. The viewer is being shown a statement the guest did not make. This is a material change requiring disclosure; calling it “audio cleanup” would be misleading.
AI-written outline and human-recorded video
An assistant generates an outline, you rewrite it, record yourself and edit ordinary lighting and captions. YouTube lists this kind of script and caption assistance and minor editing among examples that do not require its realistic-content disclosure. If the process also inserted a realistic synthetic speaker, scene or quotation, disclose that separate element.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Generated illustration for an obviously fictional story
An animated image depicts an imaginary creature in a clearly fictional setting. It is not ordinarily mistaken for documentary footage. You may still choose to identify the image as AI-generated for transparency, but the YouTube trigger for realistic misleading content is different from the EU treatment of a deepfake.
AI-generated public-interest article with human editorial control
A newsroom uses a model to draft an article about an election, then a named editor verifies facts, rewrites the text and accepts editorial responsibility. Keep a record of that process. The human-review and editorial-control exception in Article 50 may apply, but it is a legal qualification to assess for the specific publication, not a blanket exemption for every AI-assisted article.
Common failures and how to fix them
- Relying on a vague caption: Replace “some AI used” with the exact element that was generated or manipulated.
- Disclosing only in a profile bio: Move the notice to the individual post, video or first-screen experience.
- Assuming a watermark solves every rule: Preserve machine-readable provenance where required and use the platform disclosure control as well.
- Leaving the decision to automatic detection: Review the finished export yourself; automated labels can arrive late or be unavailable for a particular format.
- Calling a synthetic performance an edit: If a person appears to say or do something they did not, describe it as generated or manipulated.
- Ignoring reposts: A label that was visible on the original platform can disappear when a file is downloaded, cropped or embedded elsewhere. Add a caption or visible notice appropriate to the new destination.
- Assuming one jurisdiction controls all viewers: Identify where you publish and who you target, then check the applicable law and platform policy.
- Removing provenance metadata during export: Use workflows that preserve embedded marking and document any conversion that strips it.
Pre-publication checklist
- Have you listed every AI-generated or materially altered visual, voice, sound and text element?
- Could a viewer mistake any of those elements for a real person, event, place or statement?
- Have you separated routine assistance from changes to the apparent reality of the content?
- Did you use the destination platform’s current disclosure control?
- Is the notice visible at first exposure and readable on a small screen?
- Did you preserve machine-readable marking supplied by the provider?
- If EU audiences are involved, did you assess Article 50’s provider/deployer distinction, deepfake rule, public-interest text rule and exceptions?
- Did a human editor review public-interest text where you rely on the editorial-control exception?
- Did you view the published result as an ordinary audience member?
- Have you recorded the tool, synthetic element, reviewer and publication date so you can correct the label later?
Keep the policy check current
Platform interfaces and legal guidance can change. YouTube’s label placement and automatic-detection behavior changed in its May 27, 2026 update, and EU Article 50 obligations began on 2 August 2026. Recheck the platform’s current Help guidance, the relevant law and any jurisdiction-specific guidance immediately before publishing, especially for a new format such as Shorts, livestreams, embeds or reposts.
When in doubt, choose the clearer disclosure. A concise, accurate notice generally protects viewer understanding better than a technical explanation that leaves the audience guessing what was synthetic.
