Keep your phone inside a correctly sized waterproof pouch whenever you are not using it, and check the pouch maker’s closure instructions before you leave. A phone’s water-resistance rating is model-specific and can diminish with wear, so treat a pouch as an extra barrier—not as proof that the phone is waterproof. If the phone gets wet, disconnect cables and let it dry with airflow before charging. In a thunderstorm, put the phone away and seek safe shelter.
Before you leave for the festival
Check the event plan and your phone’s instructions
- Check the festival’s weather updates, rules about phone accessories, and information about charging stations or portable-charger rentals. These services vary by event; consult the organizer’s current guidance.
- Look up the support instructions for your exact phone model. Water-resistance ratings and test conditions vary by model, and a rating is not a guarantee of permanent protection. Apple says its devices are tested under controlled laboratory conditions and that resistance can decline with normal wear; Samsung also notes that protection may degrade and ratings vary. - Charge your phone before setting out. A portable power bank can provide an optional battery reserve, but it does not protect the phone from rain. Keep the power bank and its connectors dry.
Choose and prepare a pouch
Use a waterproof phone pouch as your first line of protection from rain. Samsung recommends placing a phone in a waterproof pouch when travelling in rainy weather. Choose one sized for your phone, check how its closure works, and follow the pouch maker’s instructions. A lanyard or other secure carry method can help reduce the chance of dropping it in mud or a crowd. These are practical selection points, not a guarantee that a particular pouch has been independently tested or will work with every phone.
Before the festival, check whether the screen and controls remain usable through the pouch. Pouch designs differ, and no particular product’s immersion performance is established here. How to use your phone in the rain
- Keep the phone in its pouch when you do not need it. Open the pouch only when you can keep the phone and the pouch opening as dry as possible, and close it according to its instructions before putting it away.
- Avoid handling an exposed phone with wet hands. Samsung advises against using a phone with wet hands.
- Do not connect a charging cable to a wet phone or use a power bank as a reason to charge in wet conditions. A battery reserve helps with charge planning; it does not make a wet connector safe.
- Use the festival’s designated charging options only as directed by the organizer, and keep your phone protected from rain while you use them.

What to do if your phone gets wet
- Disconnect cables and accessories. Do not plug a cable back in until both the phone and cable are completely dry. Apple warns that charging with a wet connector can corrode pins and cause damage or connectivity problems. Follow the exact maker’s advice for your model.
- Let the phone dry gently. For an iPhone, Apple advises holding it with the connector facing down, gently tapping out excess liquid, then leaving it in a dry place with airflow. Drying can take time; do not assume the connector is ready just because the outside looks dry.
- Avoid common drying mistakes. Do not use external heat or compressed air, insert a cotton swab, paper towel or other object into the connector, or put the phone in rice. Apple’s instructions are at If you see a liquid-detection alert on your iPhone.
- Check guidance before cleaning anything beyond water. Apple says to rinse an affected area with tap water after a non-water splash and wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not apply that advice to another phone model without checking its maker’s instructions.
When lightning is a threat, leave the phone behind
If you hear thunder or the venue issues a storm warning, stop using your phone and seek safe shelter. A rain shelter or small shed is not a safe place from lightning: the U.S. National Weather Service says, “Rain shelters, small sheds, and open vehicles are not safe.” CDC guidance says, “Seek shelter immediately.” Go to a fully enclosed vehicle or a shelter with four walls and a roof, as described in the CDC’s lightning safety guidance and the National Weather Service’s lightning safety guidance. Protecting the phone is secondary to getting yourself to safety.
