Keep one record for each shiny hunt, label it with the target Pokémon, game, and method, and update its count at breaks or whenever you switch hunts. A counter preserves the number; the record preserves what that number means. Track time separately if you want to measure active hunting rather than just the session’s elapsed time.

What to record for each hunt

Create a separate entry for every target. At minimum, record the Pokémon, game, hunting method, current count, and date. ShinyDex’s documented catch records include game, method, encounter count, and date, and it supports tracking count and time (ShinyDex). Add a session-time field if you want to distinguish short bursts of play from longer stretches.

  • Target and game: identify what you are hunting and where. A bare total can become meaningless after a target or game change.
  • Method: note whether you are counting encounters, resets, eggs, or another repeatable action.
  • Count: use one counting rule for the entire hunt. For example, increment once per completed reset or once per encounter, rather than changing conventions midway.
  • Time: decide whether you mean active hunting time or elapsed time since the session began. Pause a timer when you step away if you want active time.
  • Checkpoint: save the count and date when you take a break, stop for the day, or change hunts.

If a game setting changes what counts as a completed attempt, note that setting in the record. This helps you interpret the tally later without relying on memory.

A repeatable routine for long sessions

  1. Start a new hunt record. Enter the target, game, method, date, and starting count. Use a distinct entry instead of repurposing an unlabeled counter when changing targets.
  2. Choose the increment rule. Decide what action earns one count, then apply that rule consistently.
  3. Keep the timer’s meaning clear. Pause it when you leave if it is meant to show active hunting time. If you leave it running, label the number as elapsed session time instead.
  4. Reconcile counters at natural breaks. If you click a physical tally counter while playing, copy its total into the hunt record at a break so it stays associated with the right Pokémon, game, and method.
  5. Save a checkpoint before stopping or switching. Record the current total, date, and time. Open a separate record for a different target or game.
  6. Keep a backup if the history matters. A separate note or an export, if the tracker offers one, can preserve a useful checkpoint. The services described below do not all document backup or export behavior, so check the specific tool rather than assuming it has one.

Choose a tracking method that fits your setup

The important distinction is not which tracker has the most counters; it is whether its device, counting method, timer, and hunt history suit the way you play. The feature descriptions below come from the linked services, not independent reliability testing.

Option Documented features Check before relying on it
ShinyDex Website and desktop app; tracks encounters, time, or both; records game, method, count, and date. The homepage identifies automatic desktop counting as a Pro feature. Automatic counting is tied to the desktop app and Pro tier according to the site. Confirm the setup and paid-feature boundary fit your needs.
PokeShine Its Google Play description says it tracks Pokémon seen and searching time, supports multi-hunt route sprites, and records found Pokémon. The listing reports an update on April 25, 2026. It is an Android app. The feature description is developer-provided; check that its counting and any odds display match your game and method. A user review reports lost hunts, but one anecdote does not establish how often that happens.
Shiny Pokes Documents an encounter counter, timers, simultaneous hunts, phases and chains, plus autosave and pausing when stepping away. Its page specifies iOS 17 or newer. Check iPhone compatibility and the site’s privacy and public-profile options. Autosave and pause behavior are vendor claims, not independently tested here.
ShinyHunt / Poketch Poketch describes ShinyHunt as tracking hunt time, encounters, collection, and Pokédex completion. It distinguishes that from the older PokétchApp, which is no longer being updated. Check current device support, account or login continuity, and which features are available in the app you intend to use.
Handheld tally counter plus a note A recent community search excerpt mentions pairing a physical counter with an app or website (Reddit discussion). A tally counter records clicks, not the hunt’s target, game, method, or time. Pair it with a written or digital record and copy the total over at checkpoints.
Pokémon HOME Catch Calendar The official feature page describes a mobile Catch Calendar arranged by catch date and a Pokédex for deposited Pokémon. It documents collection organization, not an active encounter counter for a shiny hunt. Feature availability may vary.

Use odds displays as context, not a finish line

Some trackers display odds or statistics, but a displayed probability depends on the game, method, and relevant modifiers. The linked sources do not establish an authoritative, current odds table across games and methods, so a counter’s odds display should not be treated as a universal rate, a deadline, or a guarantee that a shiny will appear by a particular count.

ShinyDex’s homepage displayed 34,851 registered trainers and 1,043,613 tracked encounters when accessed on October 7, 2026 (ShinyDex). Those are live site counters, not independently audited audience figures or evidence that tracking changes hunt outcomes.
