Changing an eligible personal Google Account address to another @gmail.com address keeps the same Google Account and its saved data, but it does not guarantee that every third-party service will recognize the new address. Some services use your email as an account identifier. Update the address in each service where possible, then test how you sign in before relying on the change.
What changes—and what stays the same
For an eligible personal Google Account, changing the Google Account email to another Gmail address does not create a new account. Google says your saved data remains, the old Gmail address becomes an alternate address, and mail is delivered to both the old and new addresses. You can use either address to sign in to Google services. Google also says you can change back to the previous address, but cannot create a new Gmail-ending Google Account email for that account for 12 months after the change. See Google’s eligibility and change guidance.
The key uncertainty is outside Google: third-party services have their own account systems. A site might use your email address as its account identifier, connect your profile to Sign in with Google, or do both. Its response to your new address depends on how that service handles account changes; do not assume it will update automatically.
How a third-party account can be affected
The service still expects the old email
Google explains: “Since some linked apps identify users by email address, we continue to provide the old username to apps after you change your Google Account email to a new email address.” That may help explain why a linked service still shows or recognizes the old address. It does not mean every service will associate your new address with the existing account.

Sign in with Google no longer reaches the expected profile
A service may treat a sign-in as unfamiliar or fail to connect it to the account you used before. If that happens, first check the service’s own account or profile settings. Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends changing the email there when an appropriate setting exists, then trying Sign in with Google again. Depending on the service, you may need to remove its Google connection and reconnect it, including granting permissions again.
You cannot sign in or find an email-change setting
Use the third-party service’s account recovery process rather than creating a duplicate profile. Its “forgot password” flow may send a verification message to your old address. If the service has no suitable email-change option, Google advises against proceeding with the address change in that service’s settings. If recovery fails, Google says temporarily switching back to the old Google Account email may help. Service-specific recovery steps vary, so follow the provider’s instructions.

Prepare before changing your address
- Check that this is an eligible account. In your Google Account, look for the “Change Google Account email” setting. Google says the option may not be available for every account. The change described here is for eligible personal accounts whose current Google Account email ends in
@gmail.comand that are changing to another@gmail.comaddress. - Make a list of important third-party accounts. Include services where you used the old email to register and services where you use Sign in with Google. Note any account that would be difficult to recover.
- Check each service’s own account settings. If it offers an email-change option, follow its process. Confirm whether it requires verification at the old or new address and whether its Google sign-in connection needs separate attention.
- Back up important data. Google recommends a backup as a precaution. Use a backup method that fits your needs; an external drive is one optional way to keep a copy.
- After the change, test access. Sign in to key services using the method you normally use. Check that you reach the existing profile, not a newly created account, and confirm you can receive recovery messages.
Google specifically advises reviewing possible effects if you use a Chromebook, Sign in with Google on non-Google sites, or Chrome Remote Desktop. Its preparation guidance recommends backing up data and considering those services before changing the address.

Changing a Gmail address is not the same as these other actions
Work, school, or group account
If your address is managed by work, school, or another organization, you cannot change it through the personal-account setting. Contact your administrator. See Google’s guidance for organization-managed addresses.

Adding Gmail to a non-Gmail Google Account
This is a different process. Google says that when you add Gmail to an account that previously used a non-Gmail address, the new Gmail address becomes the primary username and the original address becomes an alternate. See Google’s explanation of Gmail and Google Account addresses.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRemoving Gmail
Removing Gmail is also different and has more serious consequences: Google says Gmail messages and settings are deleted after 30 days, and the Gmail address cannot be used by anyone in the future. Do not use the Gmail-removal process to change an eligible account to another Gmail address. Details are in Google’s Gmail removal guidance.

If a third-party login breaks after the change
- Try the service’s recovery flow. Use the non-Google site’s “forgot password” or account-recovery option. Check the old address for verification messages.
- Look for the existing account before registering again. A new registration could create a separate profile rather than restore access to the one you used previously.
- Update the address after regaining access. If the service permits it, change the email in its own account settings and verify the change.
- Reconnect Google sign-in only if needed. Google’s troubleshooting steps for some services include removing the app link and signing in again, possibly granting permissions again. The right sequence depends on the service.
- Use the old address as a fallback when recovery stalls. Google says you may temporarily switch back to the former Google Account email. For a service that only supports Google sign-in, its more involved recovery may include signing in with the old address, adding a password or changing the Google connection where the service allows it, then switching back and reconnecting. Follow the provider’s process rather than treating this as a universal procedure.
Once access is restored, save any recovered password or passkey in Google Password Manager if that is where you keep account credentials.
