If your Windows 11 taskbar keeps disappearing, turn off Automatically hide the taskbar. Locking the taskbar’s layout is a separate setting: it does not prevent auto-hide. If you actually want the taskbar to hide but it will not, leave auto-hide on and reveal it by moving the pointer to—or touching—the bottom edge of the screen.
First identify which taskbar behavior is wrong
“Keeps hiding” and “won’t stay locked” can describe opposite problems. Check which one matches what you see:
- The taskbar disappears, but you want it visible: turn off automatic hiding.
- You enabled automatic hiding, but the bar stays visible: check that the option is enabled; this is the intended setting for hiding the taskbar when it is not in use.
- The taskbar is hidden and will not appear when needed: with auto-hide on, move the pointer to or touch the bottom edge of the screen.
- The taskbar arrangement changes: check the separate lock control. Locking preserves the taskbar configuration; it does not turn off auto-hide.
Keep the taskbar visible
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
- Expand Taskbar behaviors.
- Clear Automatically hide the taskbar.
Microsoft documents this setting path in its Windows taskbar customization guide. With automatic hiding off, the taskbar should remain visible rather than retreating when it is not in use.

Use the setting that matches how you want to work:

| Automatically hide the taskbar on | The taskbar hides when not in use. Hover over or touch the bottom screen edge to reveal it. | You prefer the taskbar hidden until you need it. |
These are separate from locking the taskbar’s layout. Microsoft describes locking as preserving the taskbar configuration; it does not describe the lock as a way to disable auto-hide. If the bar vanishes, change the auto-hide setting rather than relying on the lock control.

Refresh Windows Explorer if the setting does not take effect
If the option is set correctly but the taskbar still behaves as though the old setting is active, an Independent Advisor’s response on Microsoft Q&A suggests restarting Windows Explorer. This is community troubleshooting guidance, not a guaranteed fix for the cause on your PC.
- Open Task Manager.
- Find Windows Explorer in the process list.
- Select it and choose Restart.
- Check whether the taskbar now follows the setting you chose.
The same community response suggests DISM and SFC scans, followed by restarting the PC, if the problem persists. These built-in repair tools are further troubleshooting suggestions, not a confirmed solution for every auto-hide problem. If you try them, follow Microsoft’s current instructions for running the commands in an administrator terminal.

What to check if the problem continues
The documented setting path explains how auto-hide is meant to work, but it does not establish why a particular PC might ignore the setting or fail to retain it. To narrow down the issue, note:

- Your Windows version and build.
- Whether the PC is a 2-in-1 or has a touchscreen.
- Whether the problem happens on one display or multiple displays.
- Whether the taskbar disappears unexpectedly, stays visible despite auto-hide being on, or fails to reappear at the screen edge.
Recent Windows 11 preview notes mention improved reliability when loading the taskbar system-tray area on non-touch PCs: KB5120998 for OS Builds 26200.9278 and 26100.9278 and KB5124006 for OS Build 28000.3086. Those notes do not identify the auto-hide symptom described here, so they do not show that either update fixes it.
