To keep brown marmorated stink bugs (BMSB) out, seal openings in your home before they seek shelter in early autumn. Check doors, windows, foundation cracks, crawlspace access and chimney openings, then move debris and edible vegetation away from the foundation. These steps reduce likely entry routes; they cannot guarantee that no bugs will get inside.
Why stink bugs gather around homes in autumn
This advice focuses on the brown marmorated stink bug, the species addressed in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidance. Adults seek winter shelter in early autumn. In places where BMSB is established, they may gather on building exteriors and slip indoors through cracks and crevices, often near doors and windows. EPA says they can enter structures in large numbers, but does not provide a study attribution or year for that description, so it should not be treated as a measured household forecast. Inspect and seal the most likely entry points
EPA’s U.S. federal guidance recommends checking the building envelope and closing gaps before bugs move indoors. Inspect in early autumn, and repair any openings you find using materials suited to the location and surface; EPA does not prescribe one universal sealant or product.
- Windows: Caulk gaps around window frames on the inside and outside. Check that screens are intact and fit tightly; keeping screens bug-tight is general pest-prevention advice, not a BMSB-specific finding.
- Foundation: Seal cracks and crevices where the foundation meets the rest of the structure.
- Exterior doors: Look for daylight around the perimeter. Fit weather stripping or a door sweep where a gap is visible.
- Crawlspace: Secure crawlspace entries so bugs cannot pass through loose or open access points.
- Chimney: Cap or screen the chimney opening using an appropriate fitting.
EPA’s checklist is about excluding BMSB rather than applying an indoor treatment: Brown Marmorated Stink Bug.

Reduce shelter and vegetation near the foundation
Rake away leaves and other debris beside the house, and clear edible vegetation along the foundation. EPA notes that surrounding vegetation can harbor large BMSB populations. If substantial populations remain in vegetation near the building, EPA suggests asking a pest-control professional about registered products labeled for residential outdoor use. That is not a recommendation to spray indoors or to use any particular product.
What to do if stink bugs are already inside
Vacuuming is a practical way to remove bugs indoors, but the vacuum may retain their odor afterward. Indoor aerosol sprays and foggers may kill bugs that are present, yet they do not stop more bugs from emerging through cracks once the product dries. EPA therefore does not consider them a long-term management solution.

Use traps only as a supplemental measure
A light over a pan of soapy water can attract BMSB, according to EPA, but the agency says additional tactics are needed for complete control. A trap does not close gaps in the building envelope, so use it alongside exclusion and cleanup rather than as a substitute.

Use pesticides cautiously
For pesticide treatment recommendations, EPA advises contacting a state agriculture department, diagnostic laboratory or cooperative extension service. Check that any pesticide is currently registered and labeled for the specific pest and site, and follow its label. EPA describes integrated pest management (IPM) as combining preventive steps with reduced-risk treatment methods to limit reliance on chemical pesticides; local cooperative extension or the National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) can help with product-selection questions.
