To care for a pet stick insect, identify its species first, then provide a secure, well-ventilated enclosure with room to hang during moulting, fresh leaves known to be safe for that species, and suitable moisture without leaving the habitat persistently wet. Temperature, humidity, food plants and egg management vary, so no single setup works for every stick insect.

Choose an enclosure with room to moult

Stick insects hang from a surface while shedding their skin. They need unobstructed vertical space to do this; crowding or branches that block their hanging area can contribute to failed moults or injury. The Amateur Entomologists’ Society (AES) gives a general starting point of an enclosure about three times the adult insect’s length in height. Adjust for the species, number of insects, branches and actual clear space rather than treating that ratio as a universal standard.

The Australian Museum describes an example enclosure 90 cm high for up to twelve insects, with a 60 cm² base. This is that guide’s example, not a general stocking recommendation. Use the adult size and moulting needs of your species to decide how much usable space is appropriate.

Check ventilation, access and escape gaps

Mesh or mesh-sided enclosures can provide airflow. Choose a design with a securely closing door and openings small enough to keep even young nymphs inside. Make sure the food-branch container can pass through the door for replacement and cleaning, and that surfaces can be washed. Avoid placing the enclosure in direct sunlight, where it may overheat.

Set temperature and humidity for the species

Do not add heat or seal up an enclosure by default. The AES says many stick insects do well around 25°C, while the common Indian stick insect and some relatives tolerate normal home temperatures of 17°C and above. It also describes differences in moisture needs: some species can live in a fairly open cage, while others need a nearly enclosed setup and around 80% relative humidity. These are species-specific examples, not universal settings. Identify the insect and follow care guidance for that species before changing heating or ventilation.

Feed fresh leaves that are safe for your insect

Fresh foliage is the staple food, but a plant eaten by one species may not suit another. The AES says many species accept bramble, blackberry and related Rubus plants, while noting exceptions and other food plants. The Australian Museum says commonly kept home and classroom phasmids eat eucalyptus, but notes that young eucalyptus leaves may have higher oil levels that are harder to digest. Confirm the food plant against species-specific guidance rather than relying on a general list.

Collect and keep branches safely

  • Collect only where pesticide spraying and pollution are not concerns, and check that collecting is permitted.
  • Shake branches to dislodge other animals before putting them in the enclosure.
  • Stand cut stems in water to keep leaves fresh, but secure the opening so an insect cannot fall in and drown.
  • The Australian Museum says branches may last about a week when fresh and the water is changed regularly; check them often and replace wilted foliage.
  • Do not feed leaves if pesticide exposure is uncertain.

Provide water without keeping the habitat soggy

Many stick insects drink droplets from leaves. The Australian Museum describes daily misting with a spray bottle, while the AES notes that humidity needs vary between species. Treat daily misting as that museum guide’s advice, not a schedule for every species. Follow the requirements for the insect you keep, maintain airflow, and avoid persistent wetness because excess moisture can encourage harmful mould.

Handle gently and leave moulting insects alone

Let an insect walk onto a flat hand rather than grabbing it, as the Australian Museum recommends. Handle it delicately and avoid disturbing it while it is moulting. The RSPCA warns that pesticide exposure is a serious danger. The AES notes that a lost limb may regrow at a later moult only if the insect has another moult remaining, so preventing falls and rough handling matters.

Clean the enclosure and manage eggs responsibly

Remove frass (droppings) and debris, but inspect it for eggs before disposal. Cleaning intervals depend on the enclosure, lining and moisture: the Australian Museum describes cleaning every few weeks, while the RSPCA care sheet recommends replacing paper lining weekly. Dry the enclosure after washing before returning the insects and branches.

Some species can produce fertile eggs without mating, a process called parthenogenesis; the AES gives the Indian stick insect as one example. Indian walking stick eggs can be hard to distinguish from frass. The University of California Statewide IPM Program recommends putting cage debris in a sealed bag, freezing it for a week, then disposing of it in the trash to reduce the risk of insects or eggs establishing outdoors. Follow local rules for your species and never release a pet insect or potentially egg-bearing cage debris outside.
